Shiplate Farm Fishery: Views of the main lake

General

  • Hardstanding motorhome pitches at a well-maintained Somerset fishery
  • A 20-minute drive to Cheddar Gorge, and 15 to Weston-super-Mare
  • Lake fishing on site and River Axe close by; pubs five minutes’ drive

Set at the foot of the Mendip Hills and with spectacular views over Brent Knoll and the Somerset Levels, Shiplate Farm Fishery is a peaceful West Country haven for motorhomes, with just a few hardstanding pitches, all supplied with water and electricity. Whether you’re after a base to explore Somerset or an overnight halt on the way down to Cornwall, this is a peaceful stop with only a few pitches.

As this is a working fishery, anglers who are keen to practise their casts can have a great day’s fishing in large swims on four lakes and adjacent waters. Campers have access to an unspoilt area of the River Axe and the site offers good fishing for beginners, match fisherman and carp anglers. Fishing spots on all the lakes are available on a day ticket (extra charge).

If you prefer to explore Somerset or cycle along quiet lanes, you’re in the right place too – stroll the celebrated Mendip Way (straight from site) in either direction or pick up local cycle lanes.

If you fancy a night out, head to Bleadon (five minutes’ drive) for its pubs and restaurants, or if self-catering is your way to go, there’s a farm shop in the village too. Need a big stock up on provisions? No problem, there are supermarkets in Weston-super-Mare (20 minutes).

We enjoyed the peace of the site and the fact that there are only 2 pitches. Great that each pitch has its own individual water supply. Although there is activity each morning with anglers arriving, this didn't disturb us. The fishing lakes are far enough away from the pitches not to be a disturbance. The site is some distance from the main road so there is no road traffic noise at all. If you want peace and quiet, this is the site for you!
The site manager was very friendly and helpful. So too the owner.
Also enjoyed having the ducks and geese roaming around, as well as a visit from the cat!
Easy drive to local attractions e.g. Tyntsfield House, Cheddar, Street etc.

    Disliked:

Minor grummbles that detracted from the stay:
    - Despite being mentioned a couple of times, we weren't provided with a 'welcome pack' so had no information other than from Pitch Up
    - We were locked out of the site because the Manager had left early. Unfortunately, the owners hadn't thought to keep their mobiles with them so I had to climb over the fence to get in. Not a major issue but also not great customer experience at the end of a tiring day.
    - Difficult to get motorhome level due to pitch being on stones..... ramps just sank into the stones. Recommend levelling pitch with concrete base (or similar).
    - Would have been great to have wifi as the local mobile data signal was so weak.
These points wouldn't stop us coming again but are included here as constructive feedback to help future guests.

exclusive fantastic rural stay with excellent staff, and what a view18/04/2022

With only 2 pitches this site is very exclusive. We would highly recommend if your looking for a rural peaceful get away. The site is new and the owners are tweaking the pitches, they are looking to add a bathroom for quests later.
The pitches look straight down the main lake so you can sit and watch the anglers and wildlife, even feed the ducks and geese. If fishing is your thing you just found heaven, I am a sea angler but Steve loaned me some gear and over the course of my week had several short sessions with 30+ carp averaging 10lbs the best 19.5lbs.
During are stay my wife was taken ill resulting in 3 days in hospital, everyone was so supportive including Steve and Ally the fishery workman also Adam and Sue could not do enough to help out.
We would highly recommend this site to anyone looking to escape to the country.

    Disliked:

This site is part of a working fishery as such there are anglers around the lakes during the day but nowhere near the pitches this is not a problem for us but worth noting.
The pitches, as mentioned, are in the process of completing. We where the first motor-home on site the feed back we have given them is going to be actioned, saying that we did not have a problem with the pitch.
As per the add there is no washroom on site at present, the owner has told me this is planned for the near future.
One thing to note, the nearest village is a couple of miles away and Weston is 5 miles, not walking distance, as we where there for the week we had pre booked a hire car from Enterprise, they came and picked us up and dropped us back at the end of stay.

From the manager...

Thanks Mick for your review. The fishery is a beautiful place to stay and we are always happy to welcome good guests.
We enjoyed having you here and look forward to seeing you again. Sue and the team.

Local attractions

The Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (direct from the site) is just waiting to be explored on foot or by bike, and you can hire kayaks from Mendip Activity Centre (20 minutes) to paddle down the River Axe. There are caves and Bronze Age remains along the trails in Ebbor Gorge National Nature Reserve (half an hour) and reasonably challenging hiking along the Cheddar Gorge Walk (20 minutes).

Head underground to explore a spectacular caves complex at Wookey Hole (half an hour) or have a potter around Axbridge (15 minutes), a lively town with a medieval market square, narrow streets and half-timbered, Tudor-era houses buildings as well as a slew of pubs and restaurants – and if you hit a rainy day (this being England after all) there’s a cinema there too.

Fancy a day at the beach? Weston-super-Mare (15 minutes) and Burnham-on-Sea (20 minutes) both offer an expanse of sandy beaches and traditional amusement arcades; you can also buy classic English fish and chips and munch them on one of the piers.
