  • Well-maintained countryside site in the scenic Blackmore Vale
  • A 15-minute drive from Shaftesbury and 20 from Sherborne
  • Fishing lake, nine-hole golf course and clubhouse with bar/restaurant
Up for coarse fishing, fossil hunting, sea kayaking and a quick round of golf? Head over to Henstridge Golf and Leisure for quiet stays in the Somerset countryside surrounded by much fab stuff to do. This peaceful and well-maintained site is in the stunning Blackmore Vale, a five-minute drive from the village of Henstridge and 15 minutes from the town of Shaftesbury. You might not get that far though, when the 70-acre park boasts its own well-stocked coarse fishing lake, along with a nine-hole golf course and a clubhouse with a bar and restaurant (the kitchen closes at 2pm, with last food orders taken before 1.45pm). And how might your days here pan out? Perhaps a full English and a fortifying coffee or two before you amble over to the lake for a morning of landing carp, roach and tench… then maybe a bite of lunch before perfecting your swing on the driving range and the putting green, followed by a leisurely nine holes…? If all that sporting action in the outdoors has tired you out, put up your feet in the bar and watch someone else running about on the big-screen TV. If you do want to stretch your legs, it’s a 20-minute drive to Sherborne for tours of the ancient abbey and the museum, wanders round the castles old and new and maybe a spot of kayaking or fishing on the lake.

Electric optional hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Facilities for emptying waste. Lots of open space. Toilets were clean

Disliked: Very disappointing clubhouse. Closed at 7 and no food being served. Ordered kebab delivery recommended by owners but wasn't great. Gravel pitch left feet very dirty. It was fine for an overnight stop off but wouldn't want to stay any longer than one night.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Friendly helpful staff. Lovely flat pitches. Toilet facilities great. Golf club house , very comfy. Think there is WiFi, but why would you want to sit on electronic devices?

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Nice surrounding

Disliked: Bit of a strange place. Open the shipping container as you drive down to the camping area. Random rust machinery pocking out of the undergrowth (wouldn't recommend for families). toilet/shower block in poor quality. Club house/bar felt like a residential home and looked run down. Felt a little uncomfortable as we were the only ones staying that night. We actually packed up our tent early and left.

Electric optional hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: We liked that it was near the toilet.grounds were nice and maintained .

Disliked: We were pitched in what looked like a maintenance yard , we had a view of a container which was filled with rubbish , when we complained we were not offered another pitch . Toilet \ shower room were dirty on arrival , and heating was not switched on: which made the area damp and cold , they were minimal in size and no where to place toiletries .These were cleaned after several complaints. Club house . Advertised as a restaurant, however only offered light offerings , which again was clearly not was on your advertisement : more like a working men’s club. Disabled access _ once the club was shut there was no access to the disabled toilet so a wheelchair user would have had no access. Cess pit - we were given no warning that this was to take place , he arrived at 07:00 in the morning and then went in to empty the cess pit ,this caused a stench , noise which was completely unacceptable ,

Electric optional hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The pitches themselves were well looked after and flat , clean and tidy, although could be better marked out as to how they want your caravan, the washing up room was easy to use with no charge unlike some places we been to ,was also very clean , also had a microwave for anyone to use. The fishing was very good, although I didn't fish this weekend we had a friend that did and plenty of nice carp was caught. The club house was spacious with a Pool table ( cash needed ) £1 a game. , a reasonably priced bar. Was nice being by the airfield seeing all types of small aircraft flying over .

Disliked: The shower room - the shower heads don't produce enough water it dribbles out instead and most of it comes out of the pipe , I expect that's due to the hard water and de scaling the holes would sort this , the shower curtains in the ladies were pretty bad, crispy mud on the bottoms maybe wash them every two days or buy new as they are only £1 each in home bargains. The sinks and toilets were clean just the showers , there was only 4 units on site at the weekend so can't imagine how it is at peak times . The bar - the bar closes at 1900 hrs , the owners said this is due to the number of people who are on site , it doesn't state that on booking. When we booked here we knew there was no where in the evening to go for a drink but we seen there was a club house but when we got here they told us it shuts at 7pm I was not to impressed.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: The surroundings were beautiful, lovely views and well kept pitches

Disliked: The showers were in a pretty grim portacabin, barely a trickle and on the evening we arrived the water was cold. There was some warm water in the morning but the low pressure made it very difficult to wash long hair! The temperature changed with the flush of the toilet or use of the basin too…

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Nice welcome. Flat pitch on hard standing as the grassed area was soft & we would have probably needed towing out if we had stayed in the field.

Disliked: Dirty toilets & showers. Definitely needs an upgrade, very dated & unkept.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your comments If you had a problem with the toilets and shower area and had told us we could have had them cleaned again . They are cleaned regularly but if there are any problems in between we do not know

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: A small site with plenty of space for the kids to just run about and have fun in the fresh air. You get a bit of air traffic from the local airfield, some in the night as well, not to much of a bother though. Pitch was flat and electric card with standard amount on was enough for 2 nights with the cooler running, lights and heater on at night. Generally just a peaceful couple of days catching up with family. Pretty relaxed site where you make your own fun. We played a bit of cricket and flew the kite.

Disliked: Toilets and showers were not great but for a small site, probably adequate. Could do with a refresh and a little more space in the cubicles. If club house allowed dogs inside, I may have gone in for a pint.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Ideal size area of pitches, lots of grassy areas for the kids to play. My dad really enjoyed the fishing and my husband really enjoyed the golf!

Disliked: I walked into the pitch markers twice they are a silly height poking through the longer grass, Would be great to have a kids play park.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your comments. Glad you enjoyed your stay and the fishing We are going to change the markers and make them taller

Local attractions

If you’re after ancient monuments, it’s half an hour’s drive from the site to the gigantic Cerne Abbas chalk figure and 50 minutes to Stonehenge. For sights even older, it's an hour's drive to the fossil-strewn Jurassic Coast, where you can combine kayak trips around the cliffs with amateur archaeology on the beaches at popular spots like Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, or walk sections of the South West Coast Path. It’s a similar distance to bigger coastal towns like Weymouth –where time at aquariums and skate parks can be mixed with wildlife walks round the RSPB Reserves of Radipole Lake and Lodmoor – or to Poole, where you can mix harbour cruises and seal-spotting sea safaris with the flumes, rides and slides of Splashdown waterpark. Heading inland, Bath has been drawing the crowds since Roman times and is well worth the hour-long trip: tour the old Roman baths, take a dip, soak or steam in the spa waters yourself, and top it off by making a bespoke brew at Bath Gin distillery. For cycling fans, the Bath Two Tunnels Circuit runs under and around the city on a 13-mile loop; for those more fond of gentle strolls, few sites are prettier than the Prior Park Landscape Garden, designed by Capability Brown.
