General
- Family-run site in landscaped grounds on the edge of the Quantocks
- A 20-minute drive from Taunton or the coast; a mile from a local pub
- Woodland walk, dedicated barbecue area and far-reaching rural views
Clear a generous gap in your schedule and make for Quantock Camping, a small site set over lovingly landscaped grounds on the edge of the Quantock Hills. This family-run spot is just off the A358, making it a prime position from which to set out on jaunts around Coleridge and Wordsworth country or go fossil hunting along the splendid Somerset coast.
Quantock Camping is a proper wildlife haven – the place is a brilliant blend of wilder areas that have been left to nature and well-tended gardens that have been festooned with insect-friendly flora (it's clear from the buzz about the place that the bee bank is already paying dividends). Nearby, a peaceful nature pond has proved popular with the local Quantock quackers. The Quantock Camping woodland walk is also on hand for dogs (and humans) up for a leisurely lollop around the grounds.
Day-to-day necessities are sorted, with hot showers, toilets, laundry facilities and a washing-up area to keep you and your gear fresh throughout your stay. Planning an outdoor dinner is easy as well – and highly recommended, given the gorgeous country views – as the site has dedicated barbecue areas and plenty of outdoor furniture.
Fancy quaffing a quart of Quantock ale? A dog-friendly pub is a 20-minute stroll away. For supermarkets, shops and other amenities, head to Taunton (20 minutes' drive).

Local attractions
Taunton (20 minutes' drive) is a hub of much Somerset-specific stuff: its farmers' market (said to be one of the best in the West) and several cider outfits will cater to your tastebuds, while a round or two of miniature golf in Vivary Park and a riverside stroll along the Tone should help spin out that laidback holiday mood.
After putting in the park's been ticked off your list, sign up for some more physical days out – canter through the countryside with one of the instructors from the Quantock Trekking Centre (five minutes), or don your hiking gear and set off for long stretches along the coast path around Kilve (25 minutes' drive).
Heritage hunters can follow in the footsteps of the English Romantics at Nether Stowey (20 minutes), a handsome village where Wordsworth dwelled for three years at the end of the 18th century. Cleeve Abbey (20 minutes), meanwhile, is a magnificent monastery where much of the original medieval tiled flooring is still in place.
