General

  • Small and peaceful site in the scenic Blackdown Hills
  • Spacious pitches on the edge of woodland six miles from Taunton
  • Local pub within 50 metres and several more within easy reach

It's a simple couple of minutes' amble (or totter) to (or back from) the pub local to Holly Bush Park in the Blackdown Hills, but that's not even the most mighty fine part of this small and secluded site.

This peaceful place's setting six miles south of Taunton is also a teeny drive from the border with Devon, among countryside walks, Forestry Commission woods and yet more country pubs, and all in a wildlife haven and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. If it's sands and dinos you seek, Lyme Regis, Charmouth and the spectacular Jurassic Coast are all within 35 minutes; closer to home, the site is directly opposite woodland; golf, horse riding and fishing are within a couple of miles, and two sports centres are under five miles away.

Although it's a small site, Holly Bush is acclaimed for its excellent and well-kept facilities and its overall setup, laid out over two and a half acres with green space aplenty for kids – and their grownups – to play. The amenities block has separate ladies' and gents' shower areas, free hot water, toilets, a washing-up area and a laundry room.

Calor gas is available to buy on site.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Friendly helpful people. Spacious pitches. Huge dog walking area. Easy going quiet site. Good base for exploring and walking. Clean toilets and showers. Free WiFi. They loaned us OS maps. Lovely local pub next door. Good TV signal. Local to Wellington and Taunton. Not far to Lyme and Sidmouth.

    Disliked:

Not really dislikes but the less positive ones. The toilet block was a bit dated and dark. Push button taps did not have much water coming out and it's difficult to hold the tap down and use it. Hand drier was ineffective. Wifi was weak and phone signal weak too. Not the sites fault obviously. Very fast quite busy road outside. Pitch surface was weird stuff that seemed to find its way into the van.

The owners were very understanding we arrived quite late and had to leave quite early - they communicated with us by text to ensure our stay was enjoyable.

We also met another couple in the pitch next to us who also had an old Renault trafic and so we shared hints and tips which we really benefited from.

    Very peaceful and quiet.

    Disliked:

Taps in washroom were press down and it was quite cold in there.

My wife had a weekend of practical days as part of her animal physiotherapy degree and we were looking for somewhere dog friendly to stay. We'd looked on Airbnb and found a couple of places but it was going to cost us upwards of £400, which we felt was just too expensive. The travelling party was myself and my wife and our two dogs. We found Holly Bush via PitchUp an from the moment we arrived we felt at home. Lovely friendly welcome from both Colin and Katy who couldn't have been more welcoming and friendly. We're not what you would call seasoned campers but we had a tent and decided to have a go and we absolutely loved it. The site is a lovely little site set in beautiful Somerset countryside. The toilet and shower facilities were excellent and very clean and the site itself was immaculately presented despite them having months of torrential rain. When we had an issue with the air bed we'd taken Katy couldn't have been more helpful and throughout our stay we felt extremely welcome. I also couldn't leave a review without mentioning the local pub which is literally 20 metres from the campsite. It's a lovely little country pub with a fantastic selection of beers and ciders (the ciders are made onsite by the landlord) and the food is excellent. If, like us, you're not stopping for long and aren't necessary adorned with all the latest camping paraphernalia it's the perfect place to grab a pint and get some delicious food and is also completely dog friendly. Be aware though, it's quite small inside and it gets very busy so probably good to book in advance. As well as being very welcoming Katy was also fantastic when it came to local knowledge and went to the trouble of printing me off a local map and marking me out a dog walk that also took me past another local pub for a spot of lunch. All in all a fantastic, if not very brief, stay and we will definitely be going back to explore the area a bit more. Roll on the summer!

    Disliked:

Just to state from the outset this isn't anything that I disliked at all, there just isn't anywhere else to out this. In fact, having spent many many years working on music festival sites I think it's amazing that they manage to get any wifi across the site at all. But do be aware, there is wifi but it's touch and go. But frankly, anyone going to Holly Bush that needs to be glued to their phone has missed the point.

Thank you so much for your comments, we really appreciate your feedback. We do have Wi-Fi but unfortunately, as we are in a very rural location where fibre broadband is not yet available, we don't always have the best coverage but rest assured as soon as fibre is available here we will be the first to subscribe!

As soon as we arrived, we have the best welcome ever! Lovely people & Wilfie the 10 week old cockapoo pupster welcomed us to their lovely campsite.

Toilet & Shower block was always clean, and the showers lovely and hot. Site was really tidy and well kept, and a great field next door to allow our dog to roam free on.

Good central location for exploring surrounding areas, and a pub on the doorstep, serving excellent food, real ale & ciders, what more could you want!

Would recommend, and will definitely be back!

Nice friendly welcome, very informative paper work was given by owner, and local attractions, one being the local haunted pub, just 10 metres up the road, which is very nice,
This campsite has new owners who have given notice to permanent caravan owners, when this is done the site will start to get a make over,
The toilet block was functional, but in need of updating,
    Nice quiet site.

Local attractions

This is a stunning setting, metres from woodland, walks and country pubs, and within easy driving distance of activities and attractions over Somerset, Devon and Dorset. Playing fields and parks are close by.

The coasts of three counties are all handy for day trips: at Somerset, have a day at Weston-super-Mare or Minehead, both under an hour away; at Devon, make for Seaton and Dawlish, 35 and 55 minutes' drive respectively, and at Dorset, dig into the attractions of the Jurassic Coast at Lyme Regis, Bridport and West Bay, all within 45 minutes.

For local walks and dog walks around the region's woodland and the Blackdown Hills of Outstanding Natural Beauty, try the two reservoirs and the nature reserve of Otterford Lakes, five minutes' drive from the site, where anglers can also cast off for wild brown trout. Or have an urban wander around Somerset's towns and cities such as Wellington (15 minutes), Exeter (45 minutes) and Glastonbury, just under an hour away.
