  • Wild camping in a Somerset orchard 10 minutes’ drive from Taunton
  • Sheppy’s Cider Farm 15 minutes’ drive; Lyme Regis 40 minutes
  • Back-to-basics site with direct access to Blackdown Hills walks
It’s not often you get to stay in an old cider apple orchard – much less a century-old, organic one that’s slowly being restored back to healthy life. But that’s where you’ll wake up if you decide to put down roots at dog-friendly Duddlestone Farm, a wild camping spot in rural Somerset. Facilities are pretty simple on this back-to-basics site, stretching just to drinking water and a compost loo. Parking is a few minutes’ walk from the orchard, so you’ll either need to carry all your gear in or use one of the wheelbarrows provided next to the cars. Firepits are allowed (raised off the ground please, to reduce fire risk); bring your own or hire one from the site owners. Set up on a pitch here and you may well feel a million miles away from 21st-century life, but in fact the country town of Taunton is only 10 minutes’ drive away, with a good collection of shops, restaurants, pubs and other amenities. If you’ve left something vital behind at home, you should be able to source it in town. Fancy a night out? Taunton can help there too.

Local attractions

Duddlestone Farm sits at the foot of the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (five minutes’ drive or 20 minutes’ walk), a fabulous area for hiking and cycling. There’s another AONB calling too: the Quantock Hills (20 minutes’ drive) are popular for heathland yomps and mountain biking trails, and if you’re liking the sound of clifftop adventures, join the South West Coast Path at Lyme Regis (40 minutes). When you’re chasing less strenuous seaside adventures with the kids, head for Charmouth (40 minutes) to search for fossils on the beach, or take them – and any dogs – for an airing along the shingle stretch at Branscombe (45 minutes). Taunton (10 minutes) has an indoor swimming pool, as well as the stunning Frome Hoard of Roman coins at the Museum of Somerset and plenty of match memorabilia at the Somerset Cricket Museum – they all make good rainy days ideas. Care to sample some local cider? Head for Sheppy’s Cider Farm (15 minutes) for a tour and tastings. More local produce is available at Otter Valley Ice Cream and Field Kitchen (25 minutes), where the kids will no doubt adore fudge ice cream made from milk from the farm’s dairy herd.

Liked: We had a lovely one night stay here. Ian is a nice guy. He is just setting this up and is keen to make it nice for people. We were his first ever campers. The site is away from the farm house and behind trees and hedging making it feel more cosy and therefore not overlooked.
