Games for the kids and hammocks for snoozing

  • Relaxed pop-up site 10 minutes’ drive from Somerton in Somerset
  • Glastonbury 10 minutes’ drive and Cheddar Gorge 40 minutes
  • Level pitches with picnic tables and seating in a converted horse box
Bag your spot in a Somerset field for a taste of back-to-nature, no-frills camping. Yep, The Paddock, 10 minutes’ drive from lively Somerton, is a pop-up site with level grass pitches sheltered by natural hedges and offering up woodland and hill views. Facilities on site include toilets, showers with hot water and a washing-up area, all located in the camping paddock. There are also ping-pong tables and other games for the kids as well as hammocks for snoozing in on warmer days. Barbecues are allowed on the campsite, and there are picnic tables for your convenience as well as a covered seating area in a converted horse box. If you run short on stuff, you can try the honesty fridge/freezer, which has essentials at reasonable prices, and when you’re not feeling the alfresco cooking vibe, that’s no problem either, as there’s a pub about five minutes’ walk away that serves local beers, scrumpy cider and freshly prepared meals. The site is a splendid base for touring the West Country by car, on foot or by bike. If you fancy a day on the beach, that’s do-able too, with Burnham-on-Sea and Brean about 40 minutes by car.

What customers say

A lovely, well-maintained small campsite with friendly and attentive hosts. Guests highlight the clean facilities, including spotless toilets and showers, and flat pitches. The campsite offers several thoughtful touches such as an honesty shop with reasonable prices, fire pits, and a dog stick library. Its peaceful atmosphere, proximity to local amenities and attractions like Glastonbury make it a popular choice. Some guests noted a need for more toilets when the site is busy, a concern the managers are addressing.

Electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The perfect family friendly pitch! We came in the heatwave but the little honesty shop was well stocked with ice pops/lollies and cold drinks. There’s great toys for the kids and it’s enclosed so you don’t have to worry about them running off anywhere. It was chilled and friendly, and everything that we needed. We ended up extending our stay by two nights because we loved it so much

Electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked I had a lovely stay at this campsite with my dog. The location was beautiful, peaceful, and surrounded by nature. The facilities were clean and well-maintained, and the owner was incredibly friendly and helpful. Spacious pitches and a relaxing atmosphere in the evening. Unfortunately I chose the hottest day in May which my dog didn’t cope well with, so I headed home earlier than planned. I will definitely be coming back and would highly recommend this campsite to anyone looking for a great camping experience!

Electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Beautiful, peaceful campsite, perfect for families. Clean and well maintained site, excellent grass pitches which were spacious and flat. Flushable toilets and showers available. Loved the childrens area, with a variety of games and activities available, well lit communal areas, ample washing up facilities, small fridge for campers use also available. Honesty box for milk, eggs, cold cans and ice lollies.
The owner of the site was friendly and approachable, made us feel welcome and keen to ensure out stay went well. We really enjoyed our visit, and it was a perfect base to see local attractions such as Glastonbury, Haynes Motor museum, Yeoville, bigger supermarkets / shopping easily accessible 10-15mins drive. We would definetly stay again. Excellent Wifi freely available, which is great as phone signal variable.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked We booked a last minute weekend camp over the May bank holiday at the Paddock and absolutely loved it. Lovely pitches, great communal area with picnic tables, games for kids etc. Fab facilities, great water pressure in the showers, and everything kept clean and tidy. The honest fridge and freezer were very popular. The highlight for us was the chilled and sociable vibe, everyone was super friendly and we think that's down to Neil and his partners amazing hospitality. Lots of good chat and couldn't be more helpful answering our questions about local walks and how to run a campsite. Thank you so much, we'll definitely be back.

Electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Neil and his wife were wonderful hosts - really welcoming, lovely people. Neil was always around the site chatting and checking in with guests.
The site was clean, well-maintained and safe.
The shower and toilet facility were great - I love having a toilet additionally in a private bathroom with a shower.
The pitches were a good size and the grass was lovely and soft.
There was a facility with ice-creams and soft drinks which you could pay for with an honesty box. I didn’t have cash on me to buy anything but I will do next time or card facility?!
There are some different walking options to get to the local town of Somerton - not for the faint hearted….. although, some are easier than others.
Somerton was absolutely stunning. It is so well looked after and clean with some beautiful places to sit outside of and just watch the world go by.
We watched the sunsets from our van and relaxed in the evenings.
The site provides fire pits should you wish to use one and not have your own.
It is a little gem in the Somerset countryside.

Electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked First and foremost – the welcome. The owner could not have done more to make us feel at home. Friendly, helpful, and genuinely warm, it makes such a difference when you arrive somewhere and immediately feel looked after. Within about five minutes we felt less like paying guests and more like long-lost relatives who’d popped round for a cuppa and accidentally stayed the weekend.

The site itself is lovely – around 12 grass pitches, all beautifully maintained and well kept. The grass was so neat and pristine it almost felt rude to park on it. The facilities were excellent: always clean, tidy, and well stocked. Honestly, I’ve stayed in hotels with bathrooms less spotless than these. There’s even a small on-site shop with essentials ranging from ice lollies to champagne, all run through an honesty box system, which says a lot about the trust and respect the owner has for guests. It’s wonderfully British really – “help yourself, leave the money, and please don’t run off with the Magnum ice creams.”

There’s also a fantastic games area for children, it’s pet friendly, and they even provide free fire pits – yes, free! In this day and age, when some places would probably charge extra for oxygen after 10pm, this felt positively revolutionary. Evenings spent around the fire pit with a drink in hand and marshmallows slowly turning from “perfectly toasted” to “completely cremated” were definitely a highlight. For us, this is the gold standard of campsites.

The surrounding area is beautiful too, with countless walks, rolling hills, and stunning views that make you briefly consider quitting your job and moving to the countryside permanently. Somerton, Street, and Glastonbury are all within a 10-minute drive, making it a perfect base for exploring. Whether you fancy independent shops, quirky cafés, countryside pubs, or simply pretending you’re on an episode of Escape to the Country, it’s all nearby.

We will absolutely be returning – and probably more than once! In fact, we were halfway through discussing dates for our next visit before we’d even packed the car. Thank you for such a wonderful stay.

Disliked Having to leave at the end of our stay!

Local attractions

Sporty folks will prick up their ears to hear there’s a riding centre and golf course within 10 minutes’ drive; you can also take a gentle stroll up to the Admiral Hood Monument (25 minutes’ walk) for views over Somerset right from the camping field. If you prefer your exercise a tad more hardcore, the hiking trails, climbing routes and caving options of Cheddar Gorge are 40 minutes away in the car. Culturally there’s quite a lot to do too; the photogenic remains of Gothic Glastonbury Abbey (10 minutes) are open for self-guided tours, while a handsome cathedral bristling with gargoyles and medieval Bishop’s Palace await at historic Wells (25 minutes). Petrol heads can get their fix at Haynes Motor Museum (20 minutes), among its displays of vintage models and Formula One racing cars. And if you fancy a bit of a shopping spree, you can pick up decent bargains in the stores at Clarks Village outlet centre (10 minutes). The indie boutiques of Bath and department stores in Bristol are both about an hour away too.
