  • Peaceful dog-friendly site in the scenic Somerset Levels
  • A five-minute drive from Martock and 20 minutes from Yeovil
  • Buy fishing licences and locally brewed cider on site
In need of a few days (or weeks) basking in peaceful countryside, within leisurely reach of lengthy scenic wanders? Head along to Southfork Caravan Park, a family-friendly and dog-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the large Somerset village of Martock – it’ll tick all the right boxes. The site’s in the pretty Somerset Levels and there are plenty of walking options close to hand, starting with the 50-mile long Parrett Trail along the River Parrett, which active guests might be drawn to join less than a minute’s easy stroll from the site, and which joins up with the West Somerset Coast Path at Bridgwater Bay. Not much of a rambler? Try angling for a different pursuit with a day’s fishing on the river’s banks: fishing licences are available to buy from reception, there are rods to hire if dragging kit and caboodle from home isn’t possible, and coarse fisheries within 20 minutes give plenty of avenues for landing carp, bream, tench, roach and chub. When talk of fish sets mouths watering, this is the right place to be: the Somerset Levels are well known for top-notch food, beer and cider, so there are plenty of tasty options hereabouts, and barbecues are welcome on site when something home-cooked appeals. Wash eats down with a bottle (or two) of genuine Somerset cider, available on site from the small shop…

Fully-serviced grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Location was perfect for catching up with family in Yeovil . Pitch was great lots of room and power water waste supply all good. Hosts both mother and son were very nice and friendly also helpful with local knowledge

Disliked: The very dated toilet / shower block in serious need of makeover and a good clean. Really lets the site down. This is the only reason we would not return. Such a shame

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Very peaceful surroundings

Disliked: Summary:
Very peaceful surroundings, but very excluded from almost anything. Pitches are okay (trying to be positive), but the toilets were dirty and dated/tired, in need of urgent repair or update.
We do not think we will ever return as we do not appreciate the poor level of customer service and cleanliness of the site.

Grass pitches:
Some grass, but lots of moss and weeds. Be aware that the pitches are not flat but very bumpy.
Pitchup.com does not state any tent restrictions, but they have size restrictions, and owners do not care if it is not mentioned on Pitchup's terms and conditions. In fact, you might be refused entry even if it is their fault.

Please be aware that Pitchup.com states that you can park your vehicle next to your pitch, but this is incorrect. No vehicles are allowed around the pitches.

Toilet/facilities:
In general, the site looks worn down, damaged or very tired.
Gent toilets have 2 showers, 2 loos. Loos are not too bad, but showers are just weird. The shower head is extremely low, and it is uncomfortable to take a shower.

Our experience was that the toilets were not very clean; in fact, someone made a mess in one of the cubicles, and the mess was there for several days, untouched!!!. In our state (5 days/4 nights), we did not see anyone cleaning the site at all. I strongly recommend that anyone wear sandals at all times, even when taking a shower.

We asked our neighbours, and everyone was disappointed by the low level of cleaning.

There are some extras within the toilet, such as a bad-looking hair dryer, but such items are to be paid for separately if required. However, all the equipment was dirty and covered in spider webs, so I don’t think anyone uses them. Also, there is an electrical socket in the toilet, but again, you have to pay for that electricity as well.

Mobile data/signal was a bit patchy (Vodafone), and there is no WIFI on site.

Staff:
We might be very unlucky, but we had mixed feelings about the level of friendliness. The owners implemented a new policy of charging people for electricity hookup as expected but the use is restricted to 11KWh per day, which was not part of our terms and conditions we agreed during the booking our stay, in fact it was not at all present even after we arrived, the owners agreed it was missing but an old lady told me that I might be refused entry if I don’t take their unlisted terms (Pitchup.com) even if they are wrong. This old woman was very rude and out of place and refused to let us in. However, her son was reasonable and acknowledged that it was their fault, but nevertheless, we were forced to agree to the new T&C.

If you have any problems, I highly recommend not approaching the old woman, as she will ruin your day; instead, approach her son.

We had mixed weather, 2 days were warm, and 2 days were cold. We used 37.5 KWh out of the 44 KWh allowance. However, if the weather is colder for longer. You will be ripped off with a fee of £0.62 per kWh. Why so excessively high fee per KWh?

Almost everything in here is to be paid for.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. While we are open to constructive criticism, we feel it's important to address several points in your review to ensure a fair and accurate representation of our site is maintained.

First, regarding cleanliness — we take this matter very seriously. Our facilities are cleaned daily and are monitored using signed cleaning logs and CCTV on park (fully compliant with privacy regulations). We have reviewed both the logs and footage from the dates of your stay and can confirm that cleaning was carried out as scheduled. At no point during your stay was any issue reported to staff regarding unclean facilities, which we would have addressed immediately. Also to clarify, if I was staying in a place that was totally inadequate and unclean I would have left, BUT YOU DIDNT. That speaks for itself.

As for the pitches, they are natural grass pitches located in a rural setting. While we regularly maintain them, including treatment for moss and weeds, some unevenness is to be expected with grass surfaces — a common feature of countryside sites. We do note that guests should come prepared for this, especially during wetter periods.

With regard to vehicle parking: parking directly next to pitches is weather-dependent for the safety of guests and to protect the land. This is communicated in our information and signage. In periods of sustained rain, we do restrict vehicles to designated hardstanding parking areas to prevent damage to the site and ensure all guests can access and leave safely.

Tent size and electric usage limits are clearly outlined in our site information and communicated on Pitchup.com and our website. While we understand your frustration, these terms are not hidden or introduced suddenly. The 11kWh daily electricity allowance is more than adequate for typical camping use. As average household uses 15-25kWh per day. These terms are in place to ensure fairness for all guests, and we regret if there was any confusion, but we did work to explain this on your arrival.

We were also concerned to read your remarks about one of our senior team members. Referring to her in a dismissive and disrespectful manner is uncalled for. Discrimination of any kind is totally unacceptable. All staff deserve to be treated respectfully, and we expect guests to communicate with us in the same way we aim to communicate with them — with professionalism and fairness. Despite the disagreement, our team still worked to accommodate you and clarify the policy in question. As a result of your behavior and discriminatory manor you're no longer welcome at our family run campsite.

Additional facilities (e.g. sockets, hairdryers) are optional extras and clearly marked as such. Their usage is low, which does explain some dust or cobwebs accumulating between cleanings, though they are regularly checked and cleaned when used.

Mobile data reception is outside our control and can vary based on your provider and device. While we do not currently offer Wi-Fi, this is stated upfront on Pitchup and our website.

While we regret that our site did not meet your expectations, we are confident in the level of cleanliness, maintenance, and fairness we provide — backed up by physical records and the positive feedback from the vast majority of our guests.

We wish you the best with your future travels.

Fully-serviced grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: A friendly welcome, well-kept grounds, very quiet location, secure area to let the dog off the lead, day time cafe if you need one. Shower room, washing up area, laundry all available. A river to fish in close by but you need a licence and day pass. Hard standing was level with electric point and water on the pitch.

Disliked: Shower room needs a bit of an update, hard to keep clothes dry. It might be too peaceful for some people as there's nothing closeby within walking distance.

Fully-serviced grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Nice and quiet campsite located just outside Martock village. Small campsite, very quiet due to being the Christmas period. Site manager friendly and helpful on arrival to pitch.
Has laundry facilities if needed
Great places to walk nearby and some lovely cafes too.

Disliked: We booked a fully serviced pitch (geo-blocked). Grass very muddy and pitch not private - close to neighbours (too close). Due to weather (freezing temperatures overnight), water was switched off overnight and could not access any water until 10:30am which isn’t ideal when you have a fully serviced pitch.
Toilets not cleaned on a regular basis, lack of toilet paper and dirty floors.
Lots of pot holes on the camp site and lack of light at night. Take bright torch.
No WIFI - lack of signal in places

Electric optional gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Ease of check-in despite being borderline late. Good sized pitch with hedge on one side for privacy.

Disliked: I'm 6'5" and the showers barely came up to my bellow button! I'm obviously being a tad melodramatic but I've never had to deal with showers that were fixed so low. They were however hot and free so I can't complain too much.

Local attractions

Somerset is famed for its cider, and stays at Southfork won’t disappoint on that front. The well-placed site is less than 10 minutes’ drive from Somerset Cider Brandy Company, producers of Somerset Cider Brandy and Burrow Hill Cider, and Perry’s Cider Mills and Bridge Farm Cider are open for visitors within 15 minutes. Pretty sweet, no? This isn’t just a top spot for fans of apple bevvies though… Anyone with a yen for wandering among flowers and trees is well served here too: East Lambrook Manor Gardens (home of Margery Fish’s ‘achievable’ cottage garden) are less than five minutes away, Tintinhull House Gardens are within 10 minutes, and Hestercombe is 40 minutes from the site. Prefer nature walks to be more wild and free? Step away from the cultivated lawns and meticulously planned box hedges with jaunts to the East Devon, Dorset and Blackdown Hills Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (all within 35 minutes), or head further afield with a trip to Exmoor National Park a little under an hour away. For traditional holiday days, the beaches of Somerset and Dorset – at Lyme Regis and Burnham-on-Sea – are within about an hour’s drive, and kids can be easily entertained at Longleat Safari Park, Wookey Hole and the West Somerset Railway, all within 45 minutes.
