  • Family caravan park in the Somerset Levels, 10 minutes from the M5
  • A 15-minute drive to the coast; half an hour to Wookey Hole
  • Landscaped grounds with two fishing lakes and river fishing; spa
A rural Somerset stay without the need to navigate miles of rural Somerset roads? Pull your caravan off the M5 at Junction 22, drive for a mere 10 minutes and you’ll be going through the gates of Cripps Farm Caravan Park, ready to park up on spacious and fully serviced hardstanding pitches. A handy stopover point, then, but also a fine base for an extended break – the peaceful park is surrounded by the pretty countryside of the Somerset Levels, with plenty of scope for walks, cycling, canoeing, horse riding, golf and other outdoor activities nearby. Beaches are 15 minutes’ drive away, Bristol about 45 minutes, and there’s a good chance to grab bargains at the Clarks Village outlet park half an hour away. That said, in fact you don’t even have to exit the park to get your fix of rural activity: there’s a countryside walkway on site with wildlife to spot and seating areas where you can rest and take in the view. Or you might like to bring along your rods to spend some time at the two well-stocked fishing lakes or along the banks of the Cripps river, which runs past the edge of the site. This isn’t a noisy park packed with entertainments, but it’s one that’s got the facilities sorted: wifi, a launderette, a washing-up area and toilets/showers with accessible facilities are all on site. You’re welcome to bring along a barbecue (there’s a supermarket for supplies 10 minutes’ drive away in Highbridge) and there are a couple of pubs about a mile away if you fancy heading out. Cripps Farm Caravan Park is also home to a spa, where a range of packages and holistic therapies are available in a space designed for pure relaxation (book in advance).

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch (adults only, riverside)

Liked: Honestly liked everything. So peaceful, it's a good job they had their own defibrillator, as they might have needed it to get us going. Friendly, clean, quiet, excellent off-lead walks for dogs, plenty of wildlife and birds (we watched Kingfishers),takeaway delivers for a small fee AND the ice cream van turned up unexpectedly. 😃😃👍 We didn't use the spa, as we were already relaxed. Plenty of local activities, but because we only live an hour away, we had already seen them, so just chilllllllllled.

Disliked: Tried hard to find something wrong. Nothing. Even paying 50p for shower gave me plenty of time and some spare, nice and hot too.

Paddock fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Loved the friendly, relaxed nature of the site. Cripps Farm is immaculately well kept; with the grass in pristine condition despite all the rain we've had. The toilet and washing facilities were super-clean too. We spoke to a couple of friendly campers whilst fishing and the fact that they brought their tourer before switching to a seasonal pitch speaks volumes that people want to return to Cripps Farm.

Disliked: Needing to leave and come home for work the next day.

Local attractions

Cripps Farm makes a good base for all sorts of outings in the Somerset countryside: check out the geology of Cheddar Gorge (half an hour’s drive), delve underground at Wookey Hole (35 minutes) or walk up to Glastonbury Tor (35 minutes). To see some of the countryside in a more active way, chat with the folk at Wall Eden Adventure Activities (five minutes) to sort days of canoeing, kayaking, archery or axe-throwing. If you’ve got beach time on the mind, head west for time on the sand at Burnham-on-Sea (15 minutes), a stroll among the dunes at Brean (half an hour) or a potter along the pier in Weston-super-Mare (half an hour), followed by fish and chips on the beach. Bristol (45 minutes to the city centre) is worth a visit too: there are tons of places to eat and drink, and things like Bristol Zoo, M Shed and the SS Great Britain are all popular places with the kids. There’s some good shopping in the city’s indie shops too, or you can head to Clarks Village for discount bits at the outlet shops.
