  • Family campsite on the Somerset Levels between Glastonbury and Street
  • Five minutes’ drive to Glastonbury Tor and the Chalice Well
  • Fresh veg and pop-up street food on site; shops five minutes’ drive
The owner of Bobsfield Campsite is rightly proud of its eco-credentials – and you'll soon see why at this low-impact site, which has a spectacular setting on the Somerset Levels. Surrounded by fruit trees, the level camping meadow is solar-powered and all the amenities have either been repurposed or recycled. This wonderfully laid-back site offers a chilled wild-camping environment so you can get back to the simple pleasures in life. There’s a fabulous view of Glastonbury Tor from the site (without having to climb a tree or peek through a hedge) and in the other direction, you get amazing sunsets on clear days. The few pitches are well spread out over the site, so everybody gets the chance for a bit of privacy and seclusion. There’s no electricity but there are eco-friendly solar lights dotted around the site. A biodigester takes care of waste, and the owner has installed swanky flushing toilets and a washing-up area, which also happens to be in prime position to watch the sun go down. Fresh seasonal salad and vegetable boxes are often available to buy from the site owner (yes – it’s Bob) and he also has plants for sale in a nursery. The towns of Glastonbury and Street are both around five minutes’ drive away, with a choice of shops for buying barbecue goodies, as well as pubs and restaurants if you fancy a break from cooking – and the site itself sometimes hosts the pop-up Cantina, with a menu of South American street food.

Local attractions

Birders, you’re in the right place. Bobsfield is prime territory for our feathered friends. Teasels have been left for goldfinches, and a corridor mown for the visiting barn owl. The site’s close to Westhay Moor National Nature Reserve (15 minutes’ drive), home to a recovering population of bitterns and birds as varied as marsh harriers and great white egrets. Glastonbury looms large for its ruined abbey, thought to be the burial place of mythical King Arthur, and hippy shops flogging love beads and boho scarves. There’s bargain shopping of the designer-togs kind at Clarks Village, and when you’ve raided all the stores, why not take an alfresco dip in the lido at Greenbank Pool (all five minutes)? Clamber up Glastonbury Tor for a nose around the hilltop medieval Chapel of St Michael and stunning glimpses across the Somerset Levels. Once back down at the bottom the hill, have a quiet moment in the peaceful ambience of the Chalice Well: (both five minutes). If you’ve got Glastonbury Festival tickets and prefer a quiet camping pitch, the festival site is a mere 15 minutes’ drive away from Bobsfield.
