  • Wild pop-up site with spectacular views over Exmoor National Park
  • A five-minute walk to open moorland; 25 minutes’ drive to Porlock
  • Quiet, no-frills hilltop pitches in an International Dark Sky Reserve
Seeking walking, cycling and wild-camping adventures in Exmoor National Park? Thumbs up for The Heart of Exmoor, a Somerset base with direct access to the moor and simple facilities on site. From your hilltop pitch, you can plan your holiday adventures while contemplating spectacular views of Winsford Hill and Withypool Common. The back-to-basics site is spacious and peaceful, with basic amenities including portable toilets, cold water and recycling bins (but please try to take trash home with you). After you’ve made friends with the farm animals, let the kids mess around in streams or walk your dogs across hilly fields. And even if you're out and about all day, save energy for later so you don’t miss the chance to check out the Milky Way on clear nights. If you’re low on supplies, wander down to Exford (half an hour’s walk) to raid the local store, pop into a tea room for scones and cream, or sip a pint outside a pub overlooking the village green – it’s the starting point of many local walks, including a circular route around Room Hill (keep any eye out and you’ll spot the campsite in the distance). Back on site, a two-mile hike leads across the moor to Dunkery Beacon, the highest point in the national park, where in good weather you can see for more than 80 miles. Along the way, look out for grazing Exmoor ponies and Highland cows as well as birds of prey circling above.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked We loved the peaceful surroundings and friendliness of the owner (Serena), aswell as the other campers.

There were free firepits to use and logs weren't expensive to buy onsite either.

Loads of room and the eggs were amazing.

Disliked Although we managed to get down the lane in fairly low sports cars, it took a fair bit of navigating so as not to tear our undertrays off.

Im not marking the site down because of this though.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Fantastic site, lovely an peaceful with lots of space. The toilet facilities where a plus along with options for a fire pit and wood. The views are stunning and if you get a clear sky during the night then it becomes even more spectacular with an amazing veiw of the stars. We where lucky enough to see two shooting stars and several star constellations.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Brilliant communication from the owners. Text and email so the information wasn’t missed which was very helpful. Very friendly people.

Fantastic compost loo. Probably the best I’ve ever seen. Equipped with 2 seats (helpful when travelling with children) and very spacious so you’re not bumping into everything when you’re in there with your child. A box inside the loo for charging your phone and to provide light for the toilet. Smelled very fresh and was super clean. Plenty of spare toilet roll.

Great location. 5 minute walk and you’re on the moor!! Very close to Exford for pick your own organic blue berries and a great park for the children.

Loved the facilities for fires which is a priority for us when camping. Bricks and slabs available. Spare fire pits available to borrow and wood available to buy from an honestly box or BACs details.

We didn’t buy any eggs as we’d brought our own but that would have been great if we’d stayed longer.

Where we pitched up was very gently sloping so was fine for us and didn’t lead to any slipping sidewards in our tent.

Beautiful hilltop with a cracking view. Lovely stay. Will DEFINITELY stay again when there’s another meteor shower.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Beautiful, simple campsite which, funnily enough, is in the heart of Exmoor. Firewood available and was given to us free two nights in a row. Probably the nicest compost toilet I've ever seen. We turned up on the first day of its availability and had the site. Semi-wild feel but at no point would you require 4WD.

Local attractions

Exmoor is criss-crossed with hundreds of miles of bridleways for traffic-free walking and cycling. If you’re travelling with kids, try the family walk from the ancient clapper bridge at Tarr Steps (20 minutes' drive), which leads through woodland along the Barle river, explore the moors on horseback (20 minutes), or on guided safaris in a four wheel drive. All that sound like too much activity? Try out your falconry skills while handling birds of prey at North Devon Hawk Walks (15 minutes), or attend keeper talks and spot rare black leopards at Exmoor Zoo (half an hour). Most kids are also keen to see the creepy-crawlies at Tropiquaria Wildlife Park (35 minutes). The nearest beach is at Porlock Weir (25 minutes), a shingle stretch where you can also pick up the South West Coast Path for strolls along clifftops. Further up Somerset’s north coast, you can take a dip in the Bristol Channel, go deep-sea fishing and try out numerous watersports – from surfing to coasteering – at seaside towns like Minehead (25 minutes) and Blue Anchor (45 minutes).
