Manor Farm: Relax in the tree hammock

General

  • Secluded Somerset wild camping spot on a working farm near Crewkerne
  • South Somerset Cycleway 15 minutes' drive; Jurassic Coast 40 minutes
  • Sole occupancy of a woodland glade; firepit, barbecue and shack toilet

So you want to get away from it all for a few days? Here’s your chance. The wild camping pitch at Manor Farm is hidden away in a peaceful woodland glade near Crewkerne in rural Somerset. No fellow campers, no-one to disturb you. Just the chance to wake up to the singing of birds and the sound of the burbling of the stream nearby, perhaps accompanied by the gentle mooing of the cows in surrounding fields.

Accessing the site is easy: there’s dedicated car parking space a short walk away from the pitch. Once you're there all is pretty basic: simple facilities stretch to a toilet shack and a mains water tap (no shower and no electricity, please note). There’s a cleared and chipped space for pitching a tent, plus a massive firepit and barbecue area, so you can boil kettles on the open fire and grill up supper.

If you need extra supplies, just follow the footpaths from the farm to the sleepy mellow-stone village of Merriott (five minutes’ walk) and pick up essentials from the handy store. For a change of scenery, you can stop off at the lively café in a converted chapel or head straight for the local pub.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

It’s a short drive from the farm tucked away in a field surrounded by trees. The patch is completely secluded, private, peaceful and beautiful. There is an abundance of wildlife, butterflies, dragon flies, frogs, bats, bees and we even had a deer visit us! It has a flushing toilet and eco toilet paper is provided. The fire pit area is in a separate area to your tent, with plenty of large and small stumps of wood to use as a table for prepping food and seats. There’s a little shop at the farm selling eggs, vegetables, garlic, potatoes and honey. All tasted amazing, especially the eggs!! Beautiful surroundings, centrally located and if you wanted to visit the Jurassic Coast or Stonehenge, it’s about an hours drive. Nigel and Yvonne are lovely, kind and very welcoming. We loved everything about our stay and can’t wait to go back.

AMAZING space! Almost tempted to keep it secret... You get the whole wooded glade to yourself with a proper set up: fire place, a shelter, a hammock, a fancy flush loo and well prepared pitch space with soft chipped ground for pegs. Basic, nature camping. Very secluded but near footpaths to the village. Lots of shade from the beautiful trees. Lots of wildlife - saw frogs, a very tame vole, lots of big butterflies and birds. Nigel and Yvonne are really lovely and sell farm produce in their shop, and will show you to the camping area, which is a little way from the farmhouse. And they set you up with firewood. Very welcoming. Village pub is fantastic, friendly and does good beer and amazing pizzas including vegan ones. Also a lovely looking cyclist's cafe that we didn't have time for, unfortunately, but apparently it does good breakfasts.

    Disliked:

We were there in baking sunshine so the ground was fine, but might get very boggy in the wet.
No shower at the moment although they are thinking of putting a basic outdoor one in. But there's a tap :)
Got a bit lost on the way to the village cos of confusing footpath signs - don't follow the big green footpath signs, follow the little yellow arrows.

From the manager...

Thank you for your kind review. We are so pleased you had a such great time here an we would welcome you again any time. Xx

Local attractions

Use Manor Farm as a base for walking stretches of the River Parrett Trail, or stop off at Ham Hill Country Park (both 10 minutes) and have a potter around its sprawling Iron Age hill fort. Cycle trails cross southern Somerset’s Mendip and Blackdown hills, and the challenges of the South Somerset Cycleway (15 minutes) are easily accessed too.

Sea air a number-one priority? Head to Lyme Regis Fossil Beach (40 minutes) or Charmouth (35 minutes) on the Jurassic Coast to go hunting for ammonites, or choose Seaton (45 minutes) for its long shingle expanse, promenade walks and traditional seaside attractions like fish and chip shops or ice-cream kiosks.

There are plenty of stately homes to poke around too; the lovingly restored Tudor-era National Trust-owned Barrington Court (15 minutes) also has lovely grounds with walled gardens and orchard walks. Lytes Cary Manor is another National Trust property, this one with paths leading through exotic topiary hedges and lavender gardens. Anyone with a love of military history can tour the Fleet Air Arm Museum (both 20 minutes) with its huge collection of aircraft.
