The Rodney Stoke Caravan and Camping Park: Mixed pitches – a bit of grass and a bit of gravel

General

  • Small and friendly adults-only site near Cheddar Gorge in Somerset
  • A 10-minute drive to Wookey Hole Caves; 45 minutes to Bath
  • On a bus route to Cheddar and Wells; pubs and shops 10 minutes’ drive

If tiny sites and a peaceful kid-free vibe are the things that have you stoked on holiday, you'll like The Rodney Stoke Caravan and Camping Park, a small, flower-filled and friendly site with Mendip Hills views and near Cheddar in Somerset.

On site, pitches are lined by neat hedgerows to up your privacy stakes and there’s room to park your cars too. A handy, contemporary bathroom block is out by the pitches too, and was upgraded for the 2020 season with toilets and showers.

For cooking up a feast on site, barbecues and self-contained firepits are permitted, and you can stock up on goodies for the grill at the basics store in Draycott village (five minutes’ drive).

The pitches are not far from Cheddar and the ancient city of Wells; if you fancy having a pint in a pub at either place, leave your car at base camp and take the bus running to both that leaves from the stop nearby.

The Rodney Stoke site welcomes dogs as long as they're well-behaved, but no humans under 16, please.

Please note

Minimum spacing of 2 metres between pitches.

A charge of £0.50 applies for the use of the shower.

Guests under the age of 16 are not allowed on site.

A cable measuring at least 10 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Excellent site completely spoilt by unnecesary rules01/07/2022

Well kept site with friendly and helpful staff (Tom)

    Disliked:

Excessive and sometimes uneccesary rules spoilt what coul be an exccellent site.
    1. we were not allowed to keep our car on site which was a massive inconvenience as when we are touring we do not use an awning but use the car as a store. In over 30 years caravanning we have never come across this restriction before.
    2. Washing up facility closed at 8.30 p.m. (according to the list of rules) or 9.00p.m. (according to notice in the facility) After a day out we frequently eat at a time requiring later access. We understood tht compaint had been received about noise but find that difficult to beleive, in any case 10.00p.m. would surely still not be too late.
3.Notice in shower /toilet areas states no shoes or boots to be worn. Ridiculous to expect people to leave shoes outside on the veranda. Also timer for shower outside shower cubicle means that the timing starts before one can enter the cubicle and undress.
We have never encountered these problems on any other site and therefore this poor review is the first bad review I have ever given. A pity since this could be an excellent site without all these silly rules which means I cannot recomend it

From the manager...

Dear Mr and Mrs Marks, ok lets go through this review 1 step at a time.
No 1, People are asked to keep their cars outside in the carpark because it is more convenient for the user and at the same time not causing damage to the grass area, especially in the wet. All the people that have stayed here agree with that, they have also said it's better because they don't have to open and close the gate all the time..
No 2, The washing up facility has been misused in the past that is the reason for that ruling, If you can't eat at sensible times then leave your washing up till the morning, simple.
No 3, We have had problems in the past with people walking in the toilets with muddy boots and shoes on causing damage to the floor and messing it up for other people. As it says in the rules flip flops and similar are fine. You obviously do this at home?
As far as common sense goes I think you may be at the end of the queue. Isn't it logical to have your dressing gown on, put the token in, dressing gown off and shower. I think this review you have posted is beyond ridiculous. Find somewhere else next time.

Lovely quiet place to stay, very well maintained by Tom who is also very accommodating. The grounds are level, good size pitches & the showers & toilets well kept.

Not a good reception for the phone although never bothered too much about this but tv very good reception.

This site is dog friendly but occasionally a little bit of barking going on, but on the whole this did not bother us.

Lovely secluded little site and in a perfect base for touring. Facilities were immaculate.

    Disliked:

Thought it was adult only but 2 pitches had children. One going up and down doing wheelies but apart from that it was ok

From the manager...

Hi Lisa, thanks for staying with us. The one pitch with two teenagers were here for the scrambling at Cheddar. The people told me they were both 14 when they come clearly one was about 12. They were well behaved and polite. Thanks Tom 😊😊😎😎

Tom! What a hero! He is a credit to the camp site, nothing is too much trouble. Always going above and beyond to make sure everything is flowing nicely. This has to be the most cleanest and well kept camp site we've been to.

    Disliked:

Personally for us the camp site was a little too quiet but that did not ruin our stay and I think this is down to it being adult only. This is not a bad thing it's purely down to what we like.

From the manager...

Not very peaceful dogs barking including managers dog all the time

From the manager...

You won't be coming back here to be honest. The dogs barking are next to my pitch maybe we should ban dogs all together it doesn't matter how many times I tell the owners to keep them quiet. Also make sure you read the rules next time you visit a camp site, you made a lot of noise which upset 2 of my customers.

Hi Alan, it was not my dog it was the people opposite and they were told. Also it would be a good Idea when you visit any other park to not interfere with the running of it. 🙄🙄

Directions

The site is at the bottom of the car park for the Rodney Stoke Inn. Customers with caravans and motorhomes are advised not to let a satnav direct you down New Road (which leads from the gliding club to the bottom of Draycott village), as this road is dangerous for large vehicles and towed units and it is likely to cause damage to your vehicle. Instead it is better to approach on the main road from either Axbridge or Wells.

Local attractions

Smashing Cheddar (10 minutes’ drive) offers up its gorge for climbing and caves for exploring as well as cheese- and cider-tasting opportunities. Wookey Hole Caves (both 10 minutes) have more subterranean caverns and a dinosaur-themed walk. If you’d rather pursue a more sedate pastime, golfing is close by at the Isle of Wedmore (15 minutes) and Mendip Springs (25 minutes) golf clubs, or you can try crazy golf at Cheddar too.

The seaside town of Weston-super-Mare (35 minutes) makes a popular day trip for a romp through local history at the Weston Museum, a poke around the Helicopter Museum and a stroll down the Grand Pier, or you can board a paddle steamer for a cruise along the Severn Estuary and Bristol Channel.

Fans of city-based doings can easily get to the buzzy quayside restaurants and indie shopping scene of Bristol (50 minutes) – while heritage devotees should head for Bath (45 minutes) for its renowned Thermae Bath Spa, remains of Roman baths, the Jane Austen Centre and year-round festivals.
