  • Dog-friendly site on an old Victorian farm in the Polden Hills
  • A 25-minute drive to Glastonbury Tor; 35 minutes to Cheddar Gorge
  • On-site café, gym, swimming pool, sauna, hot tub and farm animals
A place to stay in the Polden Hills among alpacas, pygmy goats, chickens and donkeys? If the sound of staying on an old Victorian farm in Somerset tickles your fancy, then map out your route to West House Farm, a dog-friendly site 25 minutes’ drive away from Glastonbury Tor. Once a working farm, the site still has a splash of farm life, as it's home to friendly farm animals ready to welcome you in. If splendid views are on your checklist, this is a super spot for you – West House Farm looks out over the Somerset Levels and the Mendip Hills (45 minutes’ drive for its limestone peaks and lakes). It’s easy to spot the coast from here too, as the beaches of Burnham-On-Sea (20 minutes’ drive) and Weston-super-Mare (35 minutes’ drive) are well within reach. After a little bit of comfort in with a rural retreat? Conveniently, this site has lots of places to unwind, whether it’s getting yourself a new do in the hair salon, rejuvenating your muscles in the hot tub and sauna or breaking a sweat in the on-site gym. (Please note that these are run by separate business available at extra cost.) Fans of fitness (or some idle doggy paddling) may want to spend time in the outdoor swimming pool. Handily, there are changing rooms with hot showers to rinse off afterwards and an on-site café to replenish any wavering energy stores after all the activities. A unisex toilet is available 24 hours a day, but please note that shower access is restricted to gym opening times (6.30am-9.30pm Monday to Friday, 8am-8pm Saturday and Sunday). If you’re missing anything from your luggage, there’s a food shop five minutes’ drive away from the site. Plus, in Bridgwater (a historic market town, 15 minutes’ drive away), it’s rather straightforward to hunt down some exciting places to eat out.

Local attractions

Cheddar Gorge (35 minutes’ drive) takes the activity underground. A National Trust site with stalactite caverns, prehistoric sites and the UK's largest underground river network, there's a big underground world to explore. Back above the ground, there are rather ripe walking grounds nearby. Aside from the Somerset countryside, The Sweet Track around the Shapwick Heath National Nature Reserve (20 minutes) runs along old Neolithic wooden tracks past meadows and reedbeds. At Catcott Complex Nature Reserve (10 minutes), the three-kilometre loop is popular with birdwatchers, while RSPB Ham Wall (15 minutes) is another good spot for wildlife watchers with bitterns, kingfishers and water voles. Wanting to see the sea too? Well, in Burnham-on-Sea (20 minutes), there’s more than just sea air. Go windsurfing or paddleboarding down at the beach or buckle in for some funfair rides on the shore. If you’re one for the city too, the site is well-connected to the M5 (the nearest junction is 10 minutes’ drive away), so that Bristol (55 minutes), Exeter (an hour) and Bath (an hour and 15 minutes) are within reach for a day sightseeing or visiting Bath’s Roman baths.
