  • Wild campsite with spectacular views over Bath and Solsbury Hill
  • Kennet and Avon Canal five minutes’ walk; Bath Abbey half an hour
  • Grass or woodland pitches; pub 15 minutes’ walk and shop 20 minutes
If you’re after a no-frills Somerset break under canvas, here’s a peaceful spot to consider. The facilities at Springfield, high up on the Bathampton Down, may be basic but the views of gorgeous Georgian Bath and Solsbury Hill (of Peter Gabriel fame) from the camping field do plenty more than compensate. Amenities on site stretch to two fresh springs (the water’s OK for drinking) and that’s your lot. Everything else you need to bring in with you. So get all your camping gear together (don’t forget torches as there’s no electricity on site), and on arrival, choose your favourite grass or woodland spot, set up your tent and settle down for a good gawk at the spectacular sights around you. If you’d like to see those sights up close, central Bath is 20 minutes’ walk away for a healthy dose of culture, shopping or dining, and Solsbury Hill an hour’s trek up and down dale. If waterside rambles are more your thing, the scenic Kennet and Avon Canal towpath is less than five minutes’ stroll from your pitch. You can reach a welcoming pub in about 15 minutes on foot, and you’re about 20 minutes from a decent-sized supermarket if you need to stock up on supplies.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: A no-frills, nearly wild site with great sunset views and it's handy for Bath and the canal path. Owner was super helpful, too.

Disliked: Flat ground is a bit limited, the site would benefit from a few more flattened spots.

From the manager: this is wild camping, you booked late at night, and arrived very late when it was dark, the weather in England has been very wet . i would not recommend turning up at such a late hour to camp. we do not live on site so using your inactive would of been a good idea

Local attractions

Stroll west along the Kennet and Avon Canal towpath and the centre of Bath (20 minutes’ walk) beckons with its exquisite ancient Roman Baths complex, the Gothic-style abbey (look out for the street performers in the square outside) and heavenly wellness sessions at futuristic Thermae Bath Spa. You can visit museums showcasing modern art, Jane Austen, architecture or fashion, browse indie stores and eat your way across the world in pubs and restaurants. Turn east along the Kennet and Avon towpath and amble along to Claverton Pumping Station (an hour) to see a two-centuries-old engineering masterpiece still at work. Carry on for another 20 minutes to Dundas Aqueduct, an impressive stone bridge completed in 1810 by canal architect John Rennie that carries the canal over the River Avon – it’s also a popular place for wild swimming if you need to cool off in summer. If you have kids with you, take them to meet pigs, goats and Shetland ponies at Bath City Farm (15 minutes’ drive), or book well in advance to get up close to sleek grey wolves at The Little Zoo (also 15 minutes).
