  • Simple Somerset farm pitches in a handy spot close to the A38
  • Cheddar Gorge and Burnham-on-Sea beach 10 minutes’ drive
  • Riverside location in Lower Weare; village pub a minute’s walk away
Seeking a slice of Somerset serenity – but without the need to negotiate lots of little winding roads? Somewhere that you can soak up the rural views but also find plenty of attractions and activities nearby? Peak View Gardens is just the place. This chilled-out site on the banks of the River Axe in Lower Weare is just off the A38 for easy journeys in and out. The village location means you’re a mere minute’s walk from the local pub, a family-friendly place with a skittle alley, home-cooked food and plenty of local beers and ciders to sample. If you’d rather cook your own dinner, that’s fine too – just bring along a barbecue and pick up supplies from the butcher or supermarket in Cheddar (10 minutes’ drive). Cheddar is, of course, also the place to pick up some cheese for your picnic lunch – and home to top attraction Cheddar Gorge (10 minutes). Other ways to fill your days around here might include hitting the beach at Burnham-on-Sea (10 minutes), heading underground at Wookey Hole (25 minutes) or exploring the pretty streets in the tiny city of Wells (half an hour). Since the site is on the edge of the Mendip Hills National Landscape, there’s also the option of getting out for a scenic walk – with the closest route being the one up Crook’s Peak, right next to the site. This is a peaceful and simple site with hot running water, and guests have access to a shower and portable toilets.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked I loved the whole experience. The pictures didn’t do it justice. It’s a perfectly small site with space in the centre. The alpacas are sweet to watch, showers were clean, tidy and hot. Would definitely be coming again. I was worried that being so close to the road it would be noisy but it’s set off the road and sound proofed with bushes and trees. It attracts kind people, either they keep to themselves quietly or they are helpful.

Disliked Disliked how hard it was to find the first time. Equally not a bad thing that unwanted people don’t know it’s there.

Liked Lovely little sire, well situated for cheddar, gorge and wells, Burnham on sea also within drive distance.
Toilet/showers clean and hot water, local pub and garage/shop in walking distance, local walk by old river axe just off entrance.
Great to see alpacas onsite.

Liked I loved the simplicity site with lovely showers and toilets. The baby alpacas was very entertaining for the kids. This site is perfect for letting the kids free and make friends and gets them off technology. I think the site would benefit from a free toy library as family's leave toys for others to play with when they go home. We have stayed her 2x now and thinking of booking again for next year. Top site and lovely staff. Very clean and tidy. Top job for all involved working on the site.

Disliked I would not change a thing.

Bell tent

Liked We have just returned from a visit at Peak View Gardens campsite, we had an absolutely wonderful time. It is quiet and family friendly and suited our needs for our 3 young boys. The view of waking up to the Alpacas in the morning was a delight. We enjoyed the stay so much that we made the decision to extend our stay by an extra night. The owners are very attentive and happy to help with anything needed -they were very quick to respond to any queries.

We will be planning to stay again in the future.

Local attractions

Hilly treks in the area around Cheddar Gorge and Caves (10 minutes’ drive) are rewarded with spectacular views of the Mendip Hills. If you’d rather head underground, you can take a tour of Gough’s Cave, with a subterranean river and awesome rock formations. It’s also possible to have a go at rock climbing and adventure caving. Into wildlife? There is no shortage of local places where you can admire beasties of all species and sizes – from Animal Farm Adventure Park, home to sheep, donkeys, wallabies and meerkats; to Puxton Park wildlife park, with farm animals, more meerkats and a monkey house, plus a high ropes course. Both are 20 minutes’ drive away. Wells (half an hour) is England’s smallest city, with an ornate Gothic cathedral known for a clock topped by mechanical jousting knights circling every 15 minutes, plus the medieval Chained Library. Events at the moated Bishop’s Palace & Gardens nearby range from garden walks to wellbeing sessions.
