  • Peaceful adults-only campsite at a private Dorset nature reserve
  • Cerne Giant 20 minutes’ drive; Abbotsbury Swannery 50 minutes
  • Wildlife lake on site; Sturminster Newton eateries 10 minutes’ drive
Going adults-only in Dorset? Best head for Redlands Breaks, set on a private nature reserve 10 minutes’ drive from Sturminster Newton. Once there, you can tuck yourselves into your cosy and peaceful accommodation – nicely quiet as there are no kids running around – and put your feet up with gorgeous views over the wildlife lake (look out for the ducklings). To make your stay at Redlands even more special, breakfast and barbecue hampers are available (for an extra cost), and you can also order wine and champagne to add to the romance of your stay at this scenic rural spot. There are food shops in Sturminster Newton as well as a choice of restaurants and brasseries for special nights out à deux, or you can order takeaways and take them back to your pitch for an equally special night in. If you fancy a cheeky drink, the nearest pub is just over half a mile away, in the village of Hazelbury Bryan. On-site facilities include a wooden shower block, a fridge for keeping your food fresh, a washing-up area and a laundry room with washing machine and tumble dryer. While dogs are very welcome on the site, please be sure to pick up after them and put the bags in the designated dog-waste bin.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Spacious, level pitches with loads of space between the vehicles.
Super clean toilets and shower.
Great views of the Dorset rolling hills.

Disliked Unheated shower room and toilet room. Fine for warmer seasons.
Mixed sex toilets x3 with open cubicles not closed in for privacy.
Sign did say single sex toilet in barn but couldnt find them.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Lovely outlook onto green grass and the lake. Saw ducks, geese and herons during our few days there. Hardstanding pitch was good. After the first night, we were the only people there, so that was nice! Good proximity for local towns, and only 40 minutes drive down to Weymouth and Chesil Beach. Pub is a short walk away but they only do basic food at weekends. We drove to The Green Man which is about 5 mins away and the food there is amazing.

Disliked Only one shower open, understandably, but was not keen as it had brown mould all round the shower tray, it's not very spacious and the heater didn't work. Would not have liked the unisex toilets if other people had been on site.
It was quite boggy due to the recent bad weather, but that's just how it is every where at the moment!

From the manager: With the winter season and reduced site usage, we’re unfortunately unable to justify spending several hundred pounds to keep the additional two showers open.

Each shower room measures 5ft by 6ft and is fitted with a full-size shower enclosure and individual electric showers, providing consistent and adequate heat for each user. We have also checked the heater in the facilities, and it is functioning correctly, so there does not appear to be an issue there.

I’m sorry if you missed the signage indicating that there are separate male and female toilets available in the barn for your use.

Regarding the ground conditions, during wet weather the areas beyond the hard standing and stone roadway can become muddy. Unfortunately, this is largely weather-dependent and not something we are able to prevent entirely.

Local attractions

In the northern reaches of Dorset National Landscape, National Trust - Cerne Giant (20 minutes’ drive) is a huge chalk hill figure (‘huge’ means exactly that: it stands at 180 feet tall) dating from around the turn of the first millennium. The well-known giant is portrayed naked, holding a large club. Weymouth (45 minutes) has a long, sandy beach with shallow waters for swimming and canoeing. Just across the road from the beach, RSPB Lodmoor is a marshy area where you might see kingfishers and ducks. Sharks and rays, but also seals, penguins and colourful seahorses, are among the residents at the Sea Life Centre. At the northern end of Chesil Beach, Abbotsbury Swannery (50 minutes) attracts large numbers of nesting mute swans – more than 100 pairs on good years. Just up the road is Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens, where you may stroll among colourful bushes of rhododendrons and hydrangeas, past little red bridges and lily ponds.
