  • Small, friendly farm site a mile from the Jurassic Coast
  • A 15-minute drive from Weymouth, Chesil Beach and Dorchester
  • Simple grass pitches with farm animals to meet; dogs welcome
It’s a gorgeous part of the world, the Jurassic Coast… and you’ll have easy access to some of its most spectacular parts when you stay at Jurassic Camp, a rural site surrounded by the scenery of the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. From this quiet little site (which is well away from main roads), it’s a 15-minute drive to Chesil Beach or the sandy beach and attractions of Weymouth, or a mile’s walk/drive to pick up the South West Coast Path around West Fleet. Plenty more lovely corners of the coastline are easily accessible too, as are family attractions including Monkey World and Corfe Castle. You can expect a friendly welcome from the team at this small farm site – not only from the family that run the place but also from the animals that reside here. Apollo the alpaca and a flock of Valais Blacknose sheep like to meet new guests, and there are also chickens and rhea around the farm that provide fresh eggs each day. (Dogs are welcome to stay here but do note that they’ll need to be kept on a lead and cleaned up after.) A small play area is on hand to provide amusement for the kids; other facilities include showers, washing-up sinks (with hot water), fridges and freezers (for your supplies from the farm shop five minutes’ drive away or the supermarket 10 minutes away). There’s no electricity on the pitches, but there’s an area for charging your gadgets.

Liked: Great location, lovely views, nice hot showers, plenty of space once the bank holiday crowd went! Great to have access to fridges and phone charging, loved the fire pits

Disliked: Was super busy on bank holiday Saturday but fine after that. Toilets basic but acceptable for a pop up

Liked: Settings and access to walks

Disliked: Disgusting facilities; dirty, smelly and rat droppings clearly visible (in the toilets!!)! Bins overflowing and weren’t emptied at all over our 3 night stay. Host tried to charge extra in cash for additional person stay rather than the cost stated on the website. Potential to be a lovely place if some money was put back into the place.

From the manager: I'm amazed how rather than bring your concerns to me you come her and tell a load of bullshit!! So for once I'll tell you how it is and the other side of the coin as the saying goes. You arrived with a bad attitude probably after a crap drive down arriving late with the idea of sneaking on an extra person who decided to tag along and not book like everyone else so on arrival yes I catch you out. Those who don't pay in advance and try to turn up but hoping to sneak in yes are charged £15 for my time to add to the booking at an extra bloody .50 pence!!!!! next time I'll refuse to allow extra non-paid tag-along's or charge 50% more!!! thanks Indeed sometimes especially the August BH weekend our bins fill and because of our rural location we only get our bins emptied fortnightly on a Thursday this is a difficult balance as we were not due till the Thursday after the BH weekend to have them collected which meant my 8 commercial bins were full. However if more people did what the signs asked, that rather than throw a hefty black bag full of all mixed rubbish into a full bin you actually recycled the contents of your black bag in to the other bins of 'glass only' /'paper & Card only / plastic & metal only' then the main blag bag waste bins would not be so full, many a time I'm at the bins to encourage and help people recycle their rubbish with nearly most campers already respectfully doing so. Myself I wonder if I was to trace your car leaving whether I would actually see you pulling up and just throwing your bag in to the already overflowing blag bag bin and just driving off without a care or perhaps you might have been part of the group that dumped your rubbish 100 yards up the road to the annoyance of my neighbours!! You than make a claim that Rat droppings were in the toilet?? can you please provide photographic evidence so I may have this checked, I would be most surprised at this as over the weekends I have my cleaner Tracy and myself cleaning the toilets as much as we can. I forget how many times the last 2 weeks of August we had to wipe down floors, toilets and cubicles from where someone had either defecated, diarrhoea or puked all over the place. Yes my gents can be smelly in the morning from the wind and then smelly from the urinal at times, its an old urinal and with old pipework, the farm has an old style sewerage treatment system and to ensure it does its job we cannot use any form of bleaching cleaners that can easily remove ammonia smells we can only use environmentally friendly expensive natural products that have only a limited use. This coming winter I will be doing away with the old stainless urinal and replacing with screened individual urinals and replacing the waste pipework. I will also now with the government finally making moves to overturn the ridiculous Nutrient legislation that came out 2 years ago preventing many rural land/property owners like myself the ability to upgrade old archaic septic tank/sewerage systems to modern effective sewerage treatment plants. This finally brings me to the final insult of 'if some money was put back into the site' so for your information I am not a seasonal campsite, I am a 28 day pop-up campsite though next year we have the ability to stay open possibly up to 60 days. this means I can offer my fields for people to camp and provide basic facilities. In 2020 I was fortunate to have some basic toilets already in place that we refurbished albeit at a limited budget, I also bought in a mobile shower unit at a cost of 6K with the money I took from that season I was able to take out a loan and spent 20K on building 9 unit showers with a state of the art looped twin tanked hot water system. Each year I use part of the income and its going back in to the camp facilities and slowly each year they improve on the previous for what is only a basic pop-up site. The rest of the income is slowly building up and this is for the next big expenditure phase, for this site to become a proper camp-site it wil require the huge investment of a state of the art sewerage treatment plant which at moment is in the region of £140K !!! So yes some bloody money is being invested in to this place!! its unfortunate but I wont be encouraging you to visit gain to see/experience this in time as quite frankly your not welcome, Ta da. Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch (groups only)

Liked: Lovely rural location, nice views to wake up to and no light pollution at all which makes for great star gazing! Check in was easy and the guy was very welcoming. Plenty of facilities if you like to have proper toilets/ showers and washing up areas. We only stayed for the weekend but had a great time. The farm animals (geese, chickens and a very lovely cat) were fine. I’ve seen reviews where they have been said to attack people but we didn’t witness this at all. People were walking by them and they didn’t seem bothered or vicious.

Disliked: The men’s toilets made the corridor smell quite bad (you have to walk past the men’s to get to the ladies) which wasn’t very pleasant but didn’t ruin our stay. The campsite is a small one, but was extremely busy so tent areas were quite cramped as lots of tents very close together, however saying this our plot gave us more than enough space to have our very large tent and seating area with campfire outside for our group. With the pitches being quite close together we did have a neighbour complain about our fire because the wind was taking the smoke in the direction of their tents but we couldn’t help that!

Liked: Good localization

Disliked: Extremely loud camping with no rules. If you have children and would like to sleep at night then don't go there! Large groups of young people listen to loud music until the morning, and the owner doesn't care. Very smelly toilets located far from the tents. No llamas.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch (family)

Liked: The animals, and the availability of fridges, freezer and mobile phone charging. The field was fairly flat and ground soft for pegging down the tent.

Disliked: Noisier than expected, late into the night on one particular night. I ended up asking two different groups to quieten down around midnight. The toilet facilities were a bit rough and ready and the men’s toilets smelled really bad.

Local attractions

Trips to the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty often mean walks or bike rides – and those are easily done from Jurassic Camp, with several footpaths and bridleways leading off into the surrounding countryside (with a couple of country pubs within walking distance too…) For a bunch of different activities, head to the excellent climbing on the Isle of Portland (25 minutes’ drive) or try Weymouth (15 minutes) for fishing and scuba diving boat trips. While in Weymouth, spend time at the SEA Life Centre, Fantasy Island amusement park or RSPB Lodmoor nature reserve. Plenty of other days out are nearby too: aim for the Tutankhamun Exhibition and Teddy Bear Museum in Dorchester (15 minutes), meet the birds at Abbotsbury Swannery (10 minutes) or visit the ruins of Corfe Castle (45 minutes). Monkey World and The Tank Museum (both 40 minutes) make good days out too, as do rides on the Swanage Railway (50 minutes).
