Jurassic Camp: Renovated Mens toilets

General

  • Small, friendly farm site a mile from the Jurassic Coast
  • A 15-minute drive from Weymouth, Chesil Beach and Dorchester
  • Simple grass pitches with farm animals to meet; dogs welcome

It’s a gorgeous part of the world, the Jurassic Coast… and you’ll have easy access to some of its most spectacular parts when you stay at Jurassic Camp, a rural site surrounded by the scenery of the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

From this family-friendly site (which is well away from main roads), it’s a five-minute drive to Abbotsbury and Chesil Beach, 15 minutes' drive to the sandy beach and attractions of Weymouth, or a mile’s walk/drive to pick up the South West Coast Path around West Fleet. Plenty more lovely corners of the coastline are easily accessible too, as are family attractions including Monkey World and Corfe Castle.

You can expect a friendly welcome from the team at this small farm site – not only from the family that run the place but also from the animals that reside here. Apollo the alpaca and a flock of Valais Blacknose sheep like to meet new guests, and there are also chickens and rhea around the farm that provide fresh eggs each day. (Dogs are welcome to stay here but do note that they’ll need to be kept on a lead and cleaned up after.)

A small play area is on hand to provide amusement for the kids; other facilities include showers, washing-up sinks (with hot water), fridges and freezers (for your supplies from the farm shop five minutes’ drive away or the supermarket 10 minutes away). There’s no electricity on the pitches, but there’s an area for charging your gadgets.

Please note

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Reception is unmanned after 6 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

We both hadn’t been camping for a few years and I can say that it has made us want to camp more often! The camp had brilliant facilities making it stress free, and also meant that we could relax. The campsite was very clean and a 10minute drive to a co op. Overall a very nice stay!

    Toilets blocked

From the manager...

Hello,
I am very sorry about the toilet blocking issue, following the Sunday Morning toilet rush there was a blockage in the main pipe which backed up to the toilets, it took a little while to get a plumber on site, but we did have them cleared and cleaned by 1PM. This was not a for-seen issue and was caused by an item being flushed that should not have been. I apologise that this may have been an unpleasant way to end the week but was unfortunately unavoidable and something we have not had happen before to this extent.

Many Thanks,

Jurassic Camp Team

Lovely place, you can pick your spot there are 4 fields to choose from and all within an easy walk of the toilet/shower block.
A couple fields did have a gentle slope but nothing too drastic, we stayed in the adult only field, but you could still see and hear the children, but they were all impeccably behaved.
Toilets were clean and well stocked, but the hand dryer didn't seem to work.
Chickens and geese roaming freely was nice to see and fresh eggs were available to purchase.

10 minute drive from Weymouth, which was great.

    Disliked:

Having to purchase logs did feel that £10 for a bag was a little excessive and your were given no other option, it does state on the page you can only use purchased logs from the site, but not the price. So make sure you have cash as there didn't seem to be any other forms of payment, but I could be mistaken.

Be aware of the geese especially if you have little ones because by their very natures they can be a little aggressive.

Farm camping but a little expensive for what is offered12/08/2022

Loved sharing the farm with animals and being able to feed the alpacas (the farmer was lovely and my children loved getting so close to them) Great to have a fire each night (although wood is £10 per bag) The location is good for Chesil beach and surrounding areas. Great views of the countryside all around the farm. Small play area for children. Between the arrival of large groups it was a really peaceful site.

    Disliked:

No warden/owner presence most of the time. Toilets blocked several times whilst we were there and toilet paper was left empty. Some of the shower cubicles also blocked. Lights in the toilet were on a timer so ended up in darkness with children. The hand dryers didn’t work at all and no hand towels.
Large groups are allowed and as there is no owner presence this got quite loud (fields are split by camping type, families, groups etc and a wire fence between but it is essentially one large field split into sections) There was a lot of loud noise and swearing at 10:30-11pm which is difficult when camping with young children. It didn’t feel like there were any rules with who stayed as long as they paid. There were groups going to find wood to steal and fires seeming a little out of control but nobody to warden this (apart from a mobile number written on a board)
With this site you basically get large fields with average toilet blocks/washing facilities. We stay at sites like that a lot for weekends but for a lot less money. I found the price too high for what was offered, especially in comparison to other sites in the area.

Second visit (on way back from Cornwall).
Lovely, quiet, clean campsite. Enjoyed so much that we will be back and visit the surrounding area with the farm as our base (and also to have some 'chill out' time here too). Sweet to see the new lambs.

Staff were very helpful and accommodating despite the fact that we accidently turned up on the wrong day! Thank you for sorting it out without any fuss. Lovely welcome.

The host was very friendly, gave us lots of information about the local area and beaches. We met all of the animals that roam free or are nearby and we were able to meet and feed the alpacas. The facilities (toilets and showers) were good and we never had to queue. There are also 2 fridges and a freezer for the guests. There are separate areas for families, groups and guests looking for some peace and quiet.

    Disliked:

You will need to drive to the beach or the coast as there are no paths leading to the sea. Also, sound travels so be prepared to hear singing and chatting until late, especially from the group area. Finally, there is an extension lead for changing your phones but beware, my daughter's portable charger and lead disappeared.

Local attractions

Trips to the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty often mean walks or bike rides – and those are easily done from Jurassic Camp, with several footpaths and bridleways leading off into the surrounding countryside (with a couple of country pubs within walking distance too…)

For a bunch of different activities, head to the excellent climbing on the Isle of Portland (20 minutes’ drive) or try Weymouth (15 minutes) for fishing and scuba diving boat trips. While in Weymouth, spend time at the SEA Life Centre, Fantasy Island amusement park or RSPB Lodmoor nature reserve.

Plenty of other days out are nearby too: aim for the Tutankhamun Exhibition and Teddy Bear Museum in Dorchester (15 minutes), meet the birds at Abbotsbury Swannery (10 minutes) or visit the ruins of Corfe Castle (45 minutes). Monkey World and The Tank Museum (both 40 minutes) make good days out too, as do rides on the Swanage Railway (50 minutes).
