  • Peaceful 10-acre site with views of Weymouth Bay and Portland harbour
  • On the South Dorset Ridgeway with access to the South West Coast Path
  • Campfires, barbecues and dogs allowed on base
There’s plenty of space for you to pick your own pitch at Donkey Down Campsite, a peaceful 10-acre park on an organic livestock farm in Sutton Poyntz. Just make sure to avoid the neolithic tumulus… That’s one of the many ancient burial mounds covering this part of the South Dorset Ridgeway landscape, so you’re in for a historical holiday as well as a scenic one during a stay here. And to be perfectly honest, ‘scenic’ is an understatement when describing this site – it’s got spectacular views across Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour, as well as the surrounding Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Alongside the park are seven acres of open access land – fab for flying a kite or exercising your dogs (which are welcome at Donkey Down) – and you can also link up with the South West Coast Path, which opens up 630 miles’ worth of walks. Peckish post-amble? Campfires and barbecues are permitted on site, so grab supplies in Preston, five minutes’ drive away, then bound back to base for some grilled fare. If you don’t fancy doing the cooking, the town has a couple of takeaways and a pub is closer by in Sutton Poyntz, a 10-minute walk away.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: The campsite was laid out very nicely with reception towards the entrance. A lot of space and so large gaps between tents. No trees means no birds singing at 0500!!! It was windy as you might expect but nothing to worry about. The toilets were composting and took a little time getting use to but presented no problem; very clean. We had live music both Saturday and Sunday which was nice to see. At night time it was very, very quiet with everyone behaving themselves very well. It took us about 10 minutes to drive down to Weymouth beach. I've been to many campsites and this was the best so far, especially in and around Weymouth. We plan to use this as our future base for visits to the area.

Disliked: Nothing really. The ground was hard as described in the literature but this was useful as it was a little windy. My wife didn't like the toilets but there again she doesn't really like any toilets! Disliked having my teenage daughter with us.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Views from the site were amazing! There’s live music on the weekend (though wraps up at a reasonable hour), a bar and hot food available to buy on site and the facilities are excellent including hot showers. The site is about a 15 min drive from Dorchester South and Weymouth train stations and local taxi firms serve it well. We walked down into Sutton Poyntz about 20-30 mins to catch the Jurassic Coaster buses to Durdle Door/Lulworth Cove which were super fast and in summer are even open top. We didn’t make it to the local beach but that’s also pretty close.

Disliked: It would be good to have some bins down the far end of the campsite

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Absolutely great little campsite. Fantastic view, fires BBQ’s and dogs allowed, live bands, food and bar. What’s not too like? It’s on top of a hill so if you don’t like wind this might not be the best for you unless the weather is perfect. Nice and simple to check in, friendly staff and decent little compost toilets. Will definitely be back.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Really sensible rules about noise at night. Amazing friendly atmosphere. Excellent music on Saturday night at the outdoor bar. BBQ food available was high quality if a little expensive. Incredible views of Weymouth Bay.

Disliked: A little exposed when the wind picks up, but that is a minor issue if you are sensible.

From the manager: Hi Thanks for your feedback. It is really useful. I am sorry you found it noisy. We do our best to keep the late night people away from the early risers but it does not always work. Thanks again. Tim

From the manager: Hi. Thanks for your feedback, much appreciated. So glad you enjoyed the atmosphere and views. We charge per person and per vehicle rather than per pitch which can make it a little more expensive for larger families than some sites. We do like to make the site accessible to singles and couples, especially if they travel without a car. Thanks again Tim

Local attractions

Strolls along the South Dorset Ridgeway and the South West Coast Path are to be had straight from this site, so make sure to pack the walking boots. Look out for the Osmington White Horse, a hillside figure carved into limestone, while you wander. For beach days, the dog-friendly Overcombe (a five-minute drive) and Ringstead bay (15 minutes) are some of your closest stretches of seaside, while Weymouth is also close by (10 minutes) for visits to the SEA LIFE Centre, Nothe Fort and boat trips from the harbour. Thrill-seeking sorts can also jetski here, plus there’s kayaking for a gentler time on the water. Dawdle to Dorchester (10 minutes) for historical sightseeing in an old market town that’s home to the Maiden Castle hillfort and Roman Town House remains, or amble to Abbotsbury (20 minutes) for access to an abbey, castle and some fab fossil foraging at Chesil beach. Other Jurassic Coast destinations in the area include the horseshoe-shaped Lulworth Cove and the arched rock formation of Durdle Door (both 25 minutes). If animal antics are what you’re after, you can peer at the protected primates in the Monkey World – Ape Rescue Centre (20 minutes).
