  • Self-catering railway wagon in the peaceful Marshwood Vale
  • Bordering Dorset, Devon and Somerset; 15 minutes from Jurassic Coast
  • Eggs sold on site (when available)
Not many people can say they’ve holidayed in a converted fruit and vegetable railway wagon… but you could be one of them if you opt for a stay at Greenacres. That wagon has now trundled its way to a permanent stop at a 12-acre smallholding in the peaceful Marshwood Vale, where countryside, coast and three counties (Dorset, Devon and Somerset) are all within easy reach. The wagon (which was built between 1927 and 1931 and used on the Weymouth to London line – in case you were wondering) has everything you need for a cosy family stay, including a kitchen area with a fridge and gas hob, and a bathroom with full-size shower and flushing loo. Handy little extras include bedding and hand towels, as well as a TV with DVD player (handy for family films on evenings in). Oh, and look out for the coat hooks – they were originally used to hang fruit baskets. Start your days right by serving up a breakfast of eggs collected on site (sold when available) – ideally laid out on the picnic table by your wagon. It's all good proper fuel for days spent on scenic countryside walks or exploring the Jurassic Coast, perhaps fossil hunting in Charmouth or exploring the seaside resort of Lyme Regis (both a 15-minute drive). Across the road from Greenacres is Foxdown Farm, where you can enjoy the animals and views across the vale while indulging in a variety of cakes and refreshments.

Local attractions

For walks among ancient hill forts, Lambert's Castle and Coney's Castle are less than a mile apart, so you can easily explore them both in a day. Get a few more miles under your belt by setting off on foot – Lambert's Castle is a 35-minute walk from the site (or five minutes by car if that seems a tad ambitious). You can also follow the walking trails at Wayford Woods (15-minute drive) or look out for wildlife on woodland walks at Langdon Hill (20 minutes), perhaps pausing for a picnic along the way. Add some architecture to your walks with a wander around the spectacular Mapperton House & Gardens (20 minutes). If you’ve come in search of animal encounters, take your pick of getting up close and personal with deer, donkeys and llamas at the South West Deer Rescue & Study Centre (10 minutes), Stokewater Meadow Donkey Walking Days (15 minutes) and UK Llamas (15 minutes). Can’t decide? Head to Axe Valley Wildlife Park (15 minutes) for a mixed collection of creatures instead. Closer to home, Foxdown Farm is just over the road for hands-on encounters with farm animals, plus a small play area and café. For some sea breeze and stunning coastline views, Golden Cap (20 minutes) is well worth a visit – the highest point on the south coast, it’s England's only natural World Heritage Site, so it must certainly merit a visit.
