Off-grid, adults-only pitches on an organic farm – how about that as a place to step away from everyday life and take it easy for a while? This supremely peaceful setup is what’s on offer at Primrose Camping, a small site within a working farm in the north Dorset countryside about 10 minutes’ drive from Shaftesbury. This is a place that’s designed for guests who are after a relaxed rural getaway, with gorgeous views over open countryside by day day and wonderfully dark skies by night for stargazing. It’s all very informal here, with guests picking whichever spot they fancy in the spacious field rather than being given designated pitches. You’re welcome to park next to your pitch, set up a gazebo or awning and light your barbecue too. Facilities have been purposely kept on the simple side here, but although there are no electric hook-ups you will have access to a drinking water standpipe, portable toilets and hot showers. There’s also a real highlight in the form of the farm shop and café a short walk from the camping field – the shop sells organic produce from the farm and other local suppliers, while the café does a good line in coffee and pastries. This is a working farm so it’s likely you’ll hear a bit of noise from tractors, livestock and other aspects of farm life. Some parts of the farm are not open to guests, but there are plenty of walking trails around the area – including some paths that lead from the farm into the lovely surroundings of the Blackmore Vale.

Local attractions

Shaftesbury (10 minutes' drive) is a good place to find shops and places to eat – and while you’re there you’ll also want to visit Shaftesbury Abbey and the Gold Hill Museum before taking in the views from the top of Gold Hill itself – made famous by a much-loved 1970s TV advert, it’s a gorgeous spot with cobbles and traditional cottages framing the Blackmore Vale scenery. There are several good walks to try out around the farm, or you could venture a little further to explore the Cranborne Chase National Landscape, perhaps taking in places like Hambledon Hill (15 minutes) or Old Wardour Castle (half an hour) along the way. If you’re ready for a beer after your walk, perhaps stop in for a tour of the Hall & Woodhouse Brewery in Blandford Forum (25 minutes). Several lovely estates are scattered around this area too – wander around Stourhead (25 minutes) to see the various follies around the landscaped gardens, admire the art collections at Kingston Lacy (35 minutes) or sign up for house tours and safaris at Longleat (40 minutes).
