  • Peaceful and simple eco-friendly site near Lytchett Matravers
  • A 15-minute drive from Poole and half an hour from Studland beach
  • Firewood sold on site; home kitchen serving weekend evening meals
Neddy Green: a simple, fab and eco-friendly smallholding, just outside the village of Lytchett Matravers. When you see the views from the big and open field you’ll understand why the Neddy Green team cares so much about the environment and have worked so hard to build a place in harmony with it. It’s low-impact all round: composting toilets, a cold water tap and a shelter they call ‘the bar’ that has been, like much of the structures on site, cleverly upcycled for new purposes. Then, there's also an outdoor hot shower where you'll be able to rinse off. Kids are welcome here and they’ll love zooming about the wide open spaces, meeting the resident goats; the camping part of the site is completely car free, so it's a safe environment for kids to run around in as well. Barbecues and campfires are welcome in designated areas and you can buy firewood on site. For eating out, take the country road from the site to a pub with food; a small supermarket is in the village 15 minutes’ walk or a five-minute drive away. The owner also runs a home kitchen called Munch, which sells cakes and hot drinks and hosts curry nights on Fridays and steak nights with a salad buffet on Saturdays just for guests; these meals can be reserved or altered for allergies and intolerances after you've booked. For bigger walks, make tracks to the Hartland Moor Nature Reserve whose wild plains start just outside Wareham (15 minutes’ drive). It’s the backdrop to many of Thomas Hardy’s novels and screen adaptations of the same, full of wildlife and walking routes.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Laid back attitude, friendly. Beautiful scenery, and close to Blandford/Dorchester/Poole/Wareham. No light pollution so clear night skies with good view of stars. Fires and barbecues permitted, guests friendly and helpful to each other.

Disliked: Lack of access to first aid kit, there really needs to be one in the shop/shack area available for use.

Liked: What's not to like. A basic, stripped back camping experience. Neddy Green has everything you need, especially the peace and quiet. Lovely hosts, who gave me a fantastic welcome and plenty of local information. Can't wait to book again for a late summer break next year. Many thanks for your hospitality.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Very relaxed site, camp fires allowed and lovely owners. Where we were pitched we could easily see our young children so could relax while they played. Only the very basics but didn't bother us and we really enjoyed our short trip. They have some animals, a couple of trees swings, trampoline and play house but best of all, plenty of open space for kids to play safely. Close links to shops and other areas of Dorset. We will definitely be coming back.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: What a really lovely campsite!! Exactly what we wanted....... Plenty of space to camp with separate car parking very near by (50 metres away - can unload car next to tent however).....makes for a nice safe campsite with lovely views uncluttered by cars. Shower is nice and hot and very clean. Three toilets which are compost toilets - also clean with a plentiful supply of loo roll!! The owner of the campsite was really lovely and obviously her passion in life is to run a nice, friendly campsite. Very helpful when we had a minor medical issue to resolve. I only wish we could have spent longer there and I would have loved to go to the music weekend over the bank holiday but alas we are at work. Thank you very much Bou - we will most definitely be back!! Chris and Andy xx

Liked: Loved the atmosphere of this site, I felt safe and secure being a solo female traveller and the young children on site were very friendly and chatty when I arrived which was lovely. It is a basic site but very well kept and very peaceful.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Not much.

Disliked: My husband took our 15 year old son to have a bit of "men's " time so we booked fir 2 days. Toilets disgusting, showers didn't work and other "guests" too loud at night. They stayed only 1 night and came back home.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Please definitely don’t come again. “Men” should surely know how to turn the gas on on a gas bottle for a hot shower. 🤦‍♀️ Our toilets are clean and sanitary and we are very clear that they are long drop composting toilets. The cleanliness of Neddy Green is very important to us and your review is such an untrue reflection.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Location is good

Disliked: Definitely not family friendly ,quite and peaceful place , when we came at the evening time there was loud music and DJ

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Such a shame, you didn’t even pitch your tent. The music was turned off two minutes after you arrived but you left, very suddenly. Your children would have had an entire field to themselves to play. 😔

Local attractions

Surrounded by the moors, Corfe Castle (20 minutes) is well worth clambering about; cool off afterwards on the floating rafts, slides and obstacles of Dorset Waterpark. More watery antics are at the Brenscombe Outdoor Centre in Wareham, from powerboating to paddleboarding and raft building, or just heading to the beach and jumping into the water. It’s around half an hour to Studland beach for kayaking, sandcastles and simple splashing about, and a similar distance to wilder stretches like Kimmeridge and Lulworth. A 45-minute drive will have you at the fossil hunting of Chesil beach. For clifftop walks, the South West Coast Path starts (or finishes) in Poole, 15 minutes away: it's 630 miles long in total, but the marked trails deliver grand views and wildlife all the way along. Perhaps take the ferry from Sandbanks to Studland to drive to Swanage for a seven-mile stretch between Swanage and Pool. The geological site of Old Harry Rocks is also in Studland. Take a trip from Poole Quay to Brownsea Island, a nature reserve with walking trails and rare red squirrels. Splashdown, a water park in Tower Park in Poole with slides, chutes and pools, has plenty to screech about. The combined attractions of Monkey World and the Tank Museum in Bovington (15 and 20 minutes) will also keep everyone’s monkeys amused.
