Lower Wraxall Farmhouse: Log store for logburning stove

General

  • Well-equipped shepherd's hut in a private garden with a stream
  • A 20-minute drive from Dorchester; half an hour from Weymouth beach
  • Logburning stove, ensuite bathroom and outdoor bath

It may have few big towns and no cities or motorways at all, but Dorset definitely doesn't have a dearth of dazzling scenery. Fan of hidden hamlets and rolling farmland? Then you may find it particularly pretty at Lower Wraxall Farmhouse, a tiny site 20 minutes' drive north of Dorchester.

Things have moved since the days when Thomas Hardy described Gabriel Oak's basic shepherd's hut in 'Far from the Madding Crowd'; guests looking for a bit of pampering should find the accommodation's kitchen, logburning stove, running water and wifi welcome. One thing hasn't changed, though – these huts are still cosy hideaways, small enough to be snug but big enough to contain almost everything you could need (there's a reason Hardy called them 'little Noah's arks’).

The hut is on a working farm, set in a secluded location a short walk away from the pastures and main buildings. The private garden it's been parked up in is bordered by a stream and is almost always abuzz with wildlife that you can admire from the comfort of your porch or on the outdoor furniture provided. Or maybe you'd like to look up at the stars while wallowing in your rather fab outdoor bath (with hot and cold water so you can get it just to your liking)?

Lower Wraxall Farmhouse is about 20 minutes' drive from Dorchester, home to the nearest supermarkets. There's also a pub and handy village shop in Cattistock, slightly more than a mile away. Closer to home, owner Judy is happy to get your day off to a good start with a full English breakfast.

Everything, Judy is a great host and gave us some great tips on where to go in the local area. It’s a fantastic location as you get to enjoy the Dorset countryside whilst being a stones throw from the coast. We didn’t have to wake up to seagulls squawking but peace and tranquility of birdsong. We had everything we could possibly need in the hut, kettle, hob, fridge, microwave. We was lucky with the weather and we were able to have a bbq every night. There is also an outdoor bath around the back of the hut, it’s truly fantastic. The hut was super clean too, the bed sheets were amazing, great mattress - had the best sleep! Loved the place and we are already looking to come back <3 unfortunately it won’t let me add photos to the review!

The Beech Hut shepherds hut was absolutely beautiful. The setting truly peaceful and idyllic, the furnishings were exceptional and the kindness of the owner was wonderful.
We had the best 4 day break - not only was the location fabulous for visits to Portland, Bridport, Cerne Abbas and Abbotsbury, but the hut was the cosiest location I've ever stayed in.
Judy left a wonderful welcome package and the fresh eggs were delicious. She even kindly gave my husband what he has called 'the best ever Victoria Sandwich cake!'
The hut was decorated to an exceptional standard.
The log burner definitely kept us warm on the cooler evenings and what can I say about the outdoor bath - it was the best! There is also a shower/toilet inside the hut but the outdoor bath was such a treat with a glass of bubbly.
We will definitely be back to the Beech Hut
Oh and not too sure if we are classed as a young couple being 50-somethings but that's what I've said we are!

Local attractions

Are you houseproud and/or a keen gardener? Prepare to meet your match at Mapperton House and Gardens (10 minutes' drive), a splendid sandstone manor with some of Dorset's top topiary. If you hold historic houses in particularly high esteem, also drive out to Sherborne Castle and Gardens (30 minutes), a fine country pile built by Sir Walter Raleigh where you can admire Capability Brown landscapes for hours on end…

Recommended beaches in the area, meanwhile, include West Bay (30 minutes), Lulworth (40 minutes) and Charmouth (45 minutes). Burton Bradstock and Codgen beaches (both half an hour away) are both particular favourites of the folk on site, as is the coast path around there. Fancy dozing on a deckchair or frittering away small change at old-school arcades? Trips to Weymouth (30 minutes) should also be in the offing.

Cerne Abbas (15 minutes) is also worth visiting for the Cerne Abbas Giant, an enormous (and very much naked) male figure carved in chalk into the hillside. No one quite knows quite how old it is or how it got there, but you can have any archeological debates over a scone or two at the village's tea rooms. For more walks, try Eggarden Hill (15 minutes) or the Iron Age fort Pilsdon Pen (25 minutes).
