Happyard: Tent pitches

General

  • Off-grid farm and alpaca centre in peaceful rural Dorset
  • Alpaca walks, meets and parties all available to book
  • A 10-minute drive to Bridport, 15 to Dorchester and 30 to Lyme Regis

It’s all about alpacas at Happyard, an eco-friendly farm home to a herd of friendly woolly beasts that guests can meet, walk with or even book a party with.

The herd’s home is rural Dorset, in a swathe of green space with views over fields towards the Hardy Monument in the distance. It’s deep in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty but is a handy spot for getting to sightseeing of all sorts: Dorchester is 15 minutes’ drive to the east, Bridport 10 minutes’ west and Weymouth within 25 minutes.

Driving west again past Bridport, the Jurassic Coast’s Charmouth and Lyme Regis are easily day-trip doable at 30 and 35 minutes. Or stop off at the site on the way to Devon or Cornwall, as its setting just after the village of Winterbourne Abbas is minutes from the A35.

The roomy accommodation field has spacious open-plan pitches – no postage-stamp sizes here, points out the site team – so there’s loads of room to roam when you’re not making friends with the Happyard herd. And yet another happy feature? Campfires and barbecues are allowed, so spark up your masterpiece and sit back under the night sky.

Please note that the site is off grid and that guests should bring their own drinking water. Portaloos and a standard toilet are the main yard but please note there are no showers on site. Book alpaca experiences in advance, using the contact details in your booking confirmation email.

Please note

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

The site is off-grid and guests should bring their own drinking water.

We love staying here! It is very peaceful here and whenever we have been it has been nice and quiet. We loved the alpacas and got to see an alpaca that had just been born that morning!
There are toilets to use too which is great and it's super close to the beach and is only a 20 min drive!

    Disliked:

The only bad thing (and it's not even bad for a heavy sleeper!) Is the road a few fields away from the campsite gets busy early in the morning so the cars sound loud, but literally everything else is perfect and it's a good alarm clock to start your day!

From the manager...

Thankyou so much for your feedback we really appreciate it and was lovely to be able to share the joy in a newborn cria for you and your lovely family
Enjoy the rest of your summer holidays ❤️🤠

Loved! The alpacas to greet you as you enter and you get to see them in the morning. Close to the main road but can’t hear a thing at night. We were able to have campfires and the owners were lovely.

    Disliked:

The grass was a bit long which wasn’t awful the lady said the regular man to mow the site did a no show but we stayed in our car so the wet grass in the morning wasn’t too bad

The views were lovely, really peaceful campsite and the fields next door had alpacas and horses! We could use our own firepit and we could bring the dog. We love staying at campsites that are more wild camping, but this one had a portaloo so that was a bonus! About a 30 min drive to the beach which was great. We loved it here and would definitely stay again!

Plenty of space to spread out for us, the kids and the dog. Our toddler enjoyed that you could see the alpacas from the tent and so could say ‘night night’ to them!

Really great little site to just get away from the city for a couple of nights. Feels remote enough that you can get an amazing look at the stars but close enough to the next town that you can go get some bits from Morrison’s/petrol station with ease. Lovely people who own the site who couldn’t have been more helpful, we had everything we needed! So cool to be able to see all the alpacas and lucky enough to see some baby ones :) they are in a separate field so where your tent is, is very clean! We would definitely visit again.

Felt welcomed by owner/manager of site, was introduced to kittens at the site and wanted to take one home!
No set pitches so could set up anywhere. No extra cost to bring a gazebo or bigger tent.
Really great scenery and the alpacas were just amazing! My dog loved it too.

    Disliked:

Only one toilet for whole site.
Not much space with shorter grass.

Local attractions

Even away from the alpacas, this is an excellently family-friendly place in which to settle down for a Dorset hol, whether you want countryside, coast, farms or fossil hunting.

Or ditch the idea of day trips while you’re here and set off on the hiking paths and bike trails around the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – Kingston Russell manor house, the Dorset Downs, Long Bredy village and the Valley of Stones National Nature Reserve are all within walking or pedalling distance.

If alpacas have whetted the kids’ appetite for creatures of all sorts, drive 20 minutes or so south to Abbotsbury Swannery, the world’s only managed colony of mute swans. Around 600 swans are here to see and help feed, on a sizeable site also home to a petting farm, play areas, pedal go-karts, a nature reserve and a maze. (The Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens are five minutes’ drive from here if you crave a calmer time afterwards.)

Other excellent options include West Bay, scenic setting of the TV drama Broadchurch (15 minutes); a gawp at the Cerne Abbas Giant (20 minutes), the 55-metre chalk figure etched into the Dorset hillside, and following the Thomas Hardy trail around Dorchester to Higher Bockhampton.

Must see

  • Abbotsbury Swannery (4.3 miles)
  • Mapperton House & Gardens (7.1 miles)
  • Hardy's Birthplace (8.9 miles)

National Trust

  • Max Gate (7.5 miles)
