  • Spacious 10-acre campsite in the small Dorset village of Burton
  • Christchurch Harbour and Avon beach 10 minutes' drive away
  • Coffee cart, visiting food vans and firepits for hire; walk to the pub
Whether you’re exploring down the local footpaths that crisscross the countryside or tracking down ponies and canoeing ventures in the New Forest National Park, a stay at Sionna Camping will help you tune into your adventurous side. This spacious site is spread over 10 acres of Dorset countryside, with many corners left over to nature. That means you can expect to see wildflowers and birds around the place and find lots of opportunities to get out and explore more. This pop-up site is in the small village of Burton, a 10-minute drive from England’s south coast and the New Forest National Park. Sionna Camping is an off-grid site so you should get dark skies at night, but LED fairy lights create laidback festival-style vibes (as well as making a great backdrop for your holiday selfies). Acoustic entertainment is also occasionally on the agenda. It’s safe to say that this friendly site also has good amenities including hot showers, toilets, a coffee cart and an occasional pop-up bar. Food vans often visit the site, which is good news for those seeking easy meals at the end of a busy day. If you'd rather cook for yourself, hire a firepit and get grilling (logs and firewood are also sold on site). As for the location, well, things are indeed convenient. The site is under a mile from two pubs, a post office and a convenience store, and there’s a pick-your-own farm shop and bakery five minutes’ drive away. Nearby seaside spots like Avon beach and Highcliffe Castle can be reached in about 10 minutes, while the stunning South West Coast Path starts about 10 miles west in Poole (30 minutes’ drive).

Liked: Easy to just pull up and pitch anywhere we liked. Nice flat field and good location for Bournemouth.

Disliked: Nobody was on site to tell us where things were such as the drinking water.

From the manager: Hi Debbie, thank you for your review ☺️🏕️ I am however, a tad confused 🤔 We have 2 hot, gas powered, showers with copious amounts of lovely hot water which are free of charge. There is also 3 sinks, 2 are for washing up & another for face & teeth 🪥 😁 not sure how the showers were missed as they are large, wooden cubicles on the right hand side of the field. We're glad that you enjoyed the Sionna welcome 🤗

Liked: Fab location near a pub that serves yummy food and less than 10 minutes drive from Avon beach. Nice quiet, flat campsite with plenty of space, clean toilets, hot showers and the nice addition of live music on Saturdays, a bar/ coffee van and fire pits for toasting marshmallows. We are first time campers (other than camping at festivals) and had a great weekend with our 3 year old. We definitely plan to return next summer.

Liked: Decent enough I, welcome was friendly & polite which is always a good start. The field seemed to drink up the rain water pretty quick (very impressive l must say!) Porter loo's were fairly adequate and clean to be fair to em'. Showers, decent enough (clean enough, warm water). Sinks for washing up and a separate tap/sink for drinking water. Other visitors decent enough, no dramas on site during the 2 night's we stayed. Drivers sensible, also coffee served in the morning (didn't go for the evening music and beer as we were out most of the day until late evening). I did however notice a little doggy-doo next to the car where we pitched up but just the one given the walking between our tent & the wash facilities/toilets so happy enough to have cleaned it up without the need to say owt. This is my/our fourth camping trip since 2020/21, Sionna takes 3rd place out of 4 with a rating of 4****/5 :-)

Disliked: Doggy-doo (it happens), no biggy Porta-loo's but that's down to personal preference I guess More good than bad, I arrived happy I left happy!

Liked: The field was spacious, plenty large enough for the Bank Holiday crowds. The location is pleasant and easy to find. Check-in was easy and we were made to feel very welcome. With easy access to Bournemouth, Sandbanks and the New Forest it's a fantastic base for a weekend or weeks stay. One of our favourite things was a pub less than 10 minutes down the road which had live music and a welcoming 'locals' vibe. The campsite also had live music on Saturday which was great and makes it standout compared to other campsites. There was a real 'coffee machine' coffee on sale on site which was a massive plus as well - another great plus. The toilets were mostly clean and if it wasn't for the Bank Holiday would have been emptied before they began to smell and become full. It's a rural cheap campsite for £20 a night - not much to argue about for the price. If you want a real toilet block, more than three showers and one hot water tap for washing up pay more for the privilege. If this is a must for you then look elsewhere!

Disliked: It's a cheap campsite so you can't argue with the facilities - however, I did dislike the the portaloo's after four days. They were presumably not emptied because of the Bank Holiday and I am sure (looking at the other reviews) the site owners to will make this clear in response to this review. My shower was lukewarm at best and there was only one 'hot' water sink which had no hot water either time I did wash up. This is the main reason why I won't be returning but for £20 it's a good site and the owners were really nice. I am sure other people had hot water and I did try and shower/wash up at 8am so perhaps would have had better luck at less busy times. All in all - as I have said - for £20 a night it's a really good site but for me I would prefer to pay more (perhaps double?) for a proper shower block, numerous sinks, and definite hot water. If you aren't as picky as me then most of these dislikes won't apply to you.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The site had basic but appropriate facilities for the price point. LOADS of space and although portaloos they were clean and well looked after. The bar area was basic but done in a festival style which was great. Most of all the owners / managers were great, friendly accommodating and couldn't have been nicer. When we asked if it was OK to leave out tent the day we were leaving they said just leave it as long as you want and go and have a nice time at the beach. Made our last day much more relaxing - ended up striking camp at 6PM.

Disliked: Showers could have been warmer and slightly exposed.

From the manager: Thank you for your review 🏕️💕 Really surprised about the showers being chilly to you as they're set to an average temperature so children don't get burnt yet adults usually find them lovely & warm... Sorry

2 bedroom rental tent

Liked: Friendly staff and easy booking, rental tents were great. Showers were OK. Firewood and BBQs available for hire. Everywhere was flat and open.

Disliked: Toilets were single portaloos and facilities were a bit bare.

Local attractions

In the New Forest National Park (10 minutes’ drive), there are plenty of activities to chuck yourself into… canoeing, archery, hiking or cycling perhaps? Visiting the Sammy Miller Motorcycle Museum (10 minutes), the National Motor Museum (35 minutes) or New Forest Wildlife Park (35 minutes)? Those of you who are keen on all the adventurous sort of stuff will spend your time wisely at Snowtrax Alpine Activity Centre (15 minutes), which runs skiing, snowboarding and ringo rides. Moors Valley Country Park (20 minutes) is just as sporty a day out, as the park has trails, a golf course and Go Ape ropes courses for those who want to channel their best monkey impression. Back towards the coast, a picnic in the grounds of Highcliffe Castle (10 minutes) could be followed by a stroll down to the beach. You may want to see how you fare with watersports like paddleboarding from Christchurch Harbour (10 minutes). Otherwise, join the sailing scene in Lymington (25 minutes) for another seaside-inspired day.
