  • Family-run site with no-frills pitches a 10-minute drive from Weymouth
  • A 10-minute drive from Chesil Beach and 20 minutes from Dorchester
  • Within walking distance of pubs, bus stops, shops and fishing lakes
What a dashing place for a Dorset trip. South Buckland Farm Campsite has gorgeous views over farmland, and it’s so quiet you probably wouldn’t be the first to forget that it’s actually only a 10-minute drive from Weymouth’s lively seafront and sandy beach. (You can also join the South West Coast Path at Weymouth, heading east towards Redcliffe Point, a 50-minute hike.) Friendly and family-run, this small site has a fairly basic set-up, but there’s a shower, toilet, rubbish disposal and an Elsan point. The pitches are all unmarked, taking shape in the farm’s fields. Sheep amble around in neighbouring fields, adding to the peaceful rural vibe. When you’ve got your bearings and feel ready to turn your attention to the surrounding area, there are fishing lakes just a couple of minutes’ walk away from the site, and a fruit farm and tearoom five minutes further on. There are pubs, shops and bus stops in Chickerell (half an hour’s walk away), although the nearest train station is in Upwey (35 minutes’ walk). For those who don’t want to take their wheels into Weymouth, the Mount Pleasant park-and-ride spot is a 10-minute drive away. The historic county town of Dorchester is a 20-minute drive away from the farm.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Visited in late April 25, single male, motorbike and tent. Really nice small, family run, site. Owner very pleasant. Level pitches with short mown grass. Only 4 pitches taken when I visited, of about 20 I would guess. Basic facililities, one toilet and shower, attached to farm house, which were very clean and tidy (I did wonder if this would be sufficient when site is full). About 10 minutes drive from Weymouth front.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: The area and cleanliness of the site

Disliked: There was not a lot of facility, for example to do the dish washing there was only a small bathroom tap with warm water. The shower was not free and 2 GBP per shower seemed excessive.

3 bedroom static caravan

Liked: We booked this for ourselves and a friend for Easter 2025 as I needed a break to recharge after a stressful time. We were so pleased we did. This is a lovely quiet campsite. The static caravan we stayed in was spotlessly clean and like a home from home. The attention to detail was excellent and made this stand out as we felt very welcome. Mel was lovely and helpful as we arrived later than we planned - great comms. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend this for anyone looking for a lovely place to stay within reach of all the local attractions. Would definitely stay here again :)

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: This is a very quiet pitch. On arrival was met by a very nice lady with a wonderful great, she explained all the amenities and times, could not fault anything really. The pitching area was nice and kept cut and clean. The shower and toilets were extremely clean.

Disliked: The only one thing I could pick up on was the shower head needed a clean as clogging with calcium or a new head but apart from that can not fault the site.

From the manager: I’m so glad that you all enjoyed your stay. Thank you for leaving the caravan beautifully clean & tidy. I’ll look forward to welcoming you back.

Local attractions

The marina in Weymouth (10 minutes’ drive) is a top spot for an alfresco fish-and-chips meal by the water. From the harbour it’s also possible to charter a boat for a fishing expedition … or you can simply stroll up to the Stone Pier and cast your line there. North-east of the town, SEA LIFE Centre Weymouth has an ocean tunnel, as well as rockpools. An 18-mile long expanse of shingle, Chesil Beach (10 minutes) protects the brackish Fleet lagoons, where you might spot birds such as egrets and geese. At the westernmost end of the lagoon is the Abbotsbury Swannery, a sanctuary for mute swans. In Dorchester (20 minutes), the Dorset Museum & Art Gallery displays archaeological items, plus artifacts relating to local history and traditions, such as a wooden, horned Ooser mask. Meanwhile, bookworms go on a pilgrimage to National Trust - Hardy's House Max Gate, which the author of ‘Tess of the d’Urbervilles’ designed and where he lived until his death in 1928.
