  • Rural site on the Jurassic Coast two miles from the centre of Weymouth
  • A 15-minute walk from Pirates Cove along the South West Coast Path
  • Views over Chesil Beach; within five minutes’ walk of a pub-restaurant
Eyeing up the Jurassic Coast for this year's getaway? Go ahead and place yourself right above one of its most iconic landmarks: Chesil Beach, an 18-mile beach stretching from West Bay to Portland. That’s right – the spacious field at Lower Bridge Farm has views of Chesil Beach. It's also right next to the South West Coast Path, putting you just a 15-minute walk from nearby Pirate Cove and a short walk from the Fleet Lagoon. Two words to describe this pop-up site are relaxed and rural. It’s down a farm track (which is not suitable for low vehicles or large motorhomes) and most suited to folks who are fully self-sufficient because there’s just one toilet, alongside facilities like drinking water, a chemical waste disposal point and general waste and recycling. As befits such a rural place, you may be able to spy horses in the surrounding fields while staying here. The quiet, grassy field has plenty of space for you to unwind, whether that’s by stretching out on your portable deckchairs or playing some family games. Dogs are welcome (on leads at all times) and should appreciate – just as much as yourselves – the dog-friendly pub-restaurant that’s just a five-minute stroll away from the farm. One last thing: rural this place may be, but it’s actually only two miles from the centre of Weymouth, so with a five-minute drive or a long-ish stroll, you’ll be at its many shops, restaurants and cafés, or its beach and harbour.

Local attractions

After gazing at Chesil Beach from Lower Bridge Farm, it is quite likely that you will be itching to get down there and see it up close. Walk south along the South West Coast Path to reach the beach (perhaps with your fishing rod in hand). Striding north along the South West Coast Path will bring you alongside the Fleet Lagoon. If you walk for long enough, around three hours or so, you’ll come across the Abbotsbury Swannery (otherwise 25 minutes’ drive), home to a nesting mute swan colony. Aside from the swans, the Fleet Lagoon also attracts the likes of egrets, brent geese and common greenshanks. When you feel the need for a beach day building, one of your closest spots is Weymouth beach (10 minutes). Weymouth’s attractions feel almost endless, with its colourful harbour, watersports, a fort with underground tunnels and an aquarium. That leaves you to tick off the attractions a bit further afield, like the red-and-white lighthouse at Portland Bill (20 minutes), the Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens (20 minutes), pretty Lulworth Cove (45 minutes) and the apes of Monkey World (40 minutes).
