General

  • Small eco-friendly site on a family farm in the Dorset countryside
  • Pick your own pitch on an oak-lined field; campfires allowed
  • Close to The Tank Museum and beaches at Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door

If you’re in the mood for a secluded stay among unspoilt Dorset countryside, how does a farm in Wareham, a mile from the nearest road and on the edge of the River Frome, sound?

From Snelling Farm Campsite you can see the sunrise through the mist of the river, take in the glorious countryside air and watch the abundance of roe deer grazing in the evening sunset. This is a real wildlife haven; keep your eyes peeled for swans, ducks and herons on the river, while catching glimpses of a passing kestrel, hare and perhaps a barn owl at dusk if you're lucky.

Keen campers themselves, the owners like to keep things simple and relaxed. Back-to-basics camping is championed here, with stargazing and social meetups around a campfire encouraged. When you arrive, simply follow the signs to the field and pick your spot on the oak-lined, 23-acre field to pitch up. There’s plenty of room to roam on the unrestricted, non-allocated pitches (fab if you’re bringing your dog along), and the team will be over to say hi when they’ve finished tending to their animals.

With sustainability in mind, facilities include electric hot showers and solar showers, washing-up sinks, eco-friendly compost toilets (please bring your own loo roll) and drinking water taps.

The villages of Wool and Crossways (both three miles) have convenience stores for supplies.

There was plenty of room and distance from other campers. The toilets were eco friendly but I would say were cleaner than normal toilets. Showers were very clean and powerful. The campsite was near to attractions, eg Monkey World, and The Tank museum. The campsite owners were excellent and visited us on a daily basis to check we were ok and if we had any problems.

    Disliked:

    Nothing to dislike.

Only due to the weather the eco showers were cold, but thats minor.

Campsite was spacious, places for children to play. Allowed fires and was pretty location.

    Disliked:

The toilets were foul - proper smelly would put me off going again. Not sure if it was the heat?!
Only 3 showers meant there was often a queue.
No hot water for washing up!

From the manager...

We are sorry you didn't like the toilets, as advertised they are compost toilets and we appreciate they are not to everyone's liking. However they are eco friendly and do not use any harsh chemicals or any water at all! We keep them well topped up with sawdust throughout the day. We also have a further 2 solar showers making 5 showers in total. The hot water for the washing up is solar powered so we can't guarantee hot water at all times.

This is an amazing campsite if you, like us, prefer basic and quiet campsites. If you want to party, this campsite is not for you. We loved it. No music allowed on one of the fields, absolute bliss after several experiences with very inconsiderate other campers. This campsite has a lovely family atmosphere, there is loads of space and camp fires are allowed. The campsite is remote, access is via a mile long forest track. There is no mobile phone signal or internet, and the nearest shop is several miles away. Facilities are basic, with compost toilets, but extremely clean and well maintained. We are definitely planning to come back.

    Disliked:

Not a real dislike but more of a note. The campsite is in an area where there is a lot of military activity. At times the noise of tanks roaring around and Helicopters flying above can be a bit intrusive.

Love everything about Snelling’s farm. Have stayed in plenty of wild camp sites and Snelling’s is by far the Ferrari of wild camp sites! Beautifully tended to and kept clean, the kids loved the freedom of the hay bales and rope swings. Can’t wait to go back in August.

Directions

Do not follow your satnav as it will try and take you through a deep river. When you pass the left-hand turning for Clouds Hill/Bovington Tank Museum, start to slow down as you are taking the next left in 100 yards. Continue down this forest track for about a mile. Take the only turning left (footpath signposted Bovington), which takes you between two fields. On the bend, continue straight through the farm gate and you will see the pitch fields.

Local attractions

There’s fresh air aplenty here; the farm is set on the Lawrence of Arabia Trail, which has more than six miles of family-friendly cycling and walking through Moreton and Bovington forest. And explores can continue into the neighbouring Affpuddle forest, too.

Moreton Ford is a 10-minute walk from the farm, a scenic spot for a picnic by the water, paddling and (maybe) catching a small fish. Slightly further on, you can get your hands (and mouths) on tasty breakfasts and cream teas in Moreton village (15-minute walk), and a visit to the church of St Nicholas and the grave of author TE Lawrence comes recommended.

Despite its rural location, the site is within a short drive of many attractions. The Tank Museum and Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre are both about a 10-minute drive, and Warmwell Leisure Centre (15 minutes) is another good choice, with an indoor pool with wave machine and flume, a dry ski slope and an indoor soft play area to amuse the whole gang.

You can also have a walk or swim at nearby Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door beaches (both 25 minutes). Or take your pick of historical and impressive buildings at Athelhampton House & Gardens (15 minutes), Lulworth Castle (20 minutes), Corfe Castle (20 minutes) or Kingston Lacey estate (half an hour).

Must see

  • Monkey World - Ape Rescue Centre (2.2 miles)
  • Lulworth Castle & Park (5.2 miles)
