General

  • Simple farm camping in Dorset
  • Dog-friendly site with back-to-basic camping and campfires
  • Close to the beaches at Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door

Among Dorset countryside on the edge of the River Frome, Snelling Farm is in a rural setting for camping for families, friends and couples. The farm is well off the beaten track a mile from the nearest road, in an unspoilt countryside location but within a short drive of many attractions including The Tank Museum at Bovington and its regular events including Tankfest.

Keen campers themselves, Sam and Cristabel know what's important and they want to keep things simple and relaxed. The owners champion back-to-basics camping, encouraging star gazing and meetups around a campfire, and have picked a scenic, level flat, oak-lined 23-acre field for the camping area where guests can pick their own spot and have plenty of room on unrestricted, non-allocated pitches. Dogs are welcome.

From here you can enjoy the sunrise through the mist of the River Frome, take in the glorious afternoon sun and watching the abundance of roe deer grazing in the evening sunset. This is a real home for wildlife where you can watch the swans, ducks and herons on the river while catching a glimpse of a passing kestrel, hare and even a barn owl at dusk if you're lucky.

The campsite is well equipped with electric hot showers, washing-up sinks, eco-friendly compost toilets (please bring your own loo roll) and drinking water taps. The villages of Wool and Crossways (both three miles) have convenience stores.

When you arrive please follow the signs to the field, pick a spot and pitch up. Sam or Cristabel will be round to say hello when they have finished tending to their animals.

Fantastic open space, great area for children to run free. Great for mountain biking and walking. The ford was a brilliant source of fun for all. Even mum and dad went on the rope swing. We didn't leave the campsite by car for 3 days! Very unlike our family. Really friendly staff loved that they came round each evening so we could buy logs for the camp fire. The children loved the eco toilets! They were clean and didn't smell showers were clean and hot.

Beautiful field - really quiet and remote setting. Yet very close to the amazing Dorset coastline and just 5 mins from a great shop where you can get everything you need. Great to be able to have an open fire and the loos and showers are perfectly fine and functional. Cristabel was great - good communication and very relaxed

    Disliked:

Nothing - great place and really enjoyed it. The wind was very strong when we were there, but tucked in under the trees, it was absolutely fine and you were out of the breeze

There was a choice between two fields: 'early to bed, early to rise' or 'late to bed, late to rise.'

Owners were super-friendly! They come round in the evening on a small quad bike (with a very cuddly border collie!) to take payment and leave a marker so they know you're settled up. We were worried as we pitched the tent at about midday and then headed off to Corfe Castle for the afternoon, but this wasn't an issue at all.

As the field is so large it was lovely and quiet. We are a young couple travelling alone so were pleased not to be bothered by loud families with children.

If you do have children, the campsite is perfect: it's completely safe (well-enclosed and no streams etc.) and I noticed they were enjoying playing on a climbing tower made from bundles of hay.

The owners encourage bonfires and barbecues; we enjoyed the smell while sitting out at night! Beautiful atmosphere during the evenings - especially once it gets dark (and I mean DARK!).

The location is also perfect - we were there for three days and ran out of time; there were so many more things we wanted to do.

    Disliked:

The showers are hot but the pressure is terrible and they turn themselves off after about ten seconds so you have to hold the button down. There were only four in our field so there was a bit of a queue.

There weren't any sinks so we had to brush our teeth over the drinking fountain and couldn't wash our hands properly.

The toilets stink to high heaven as they use wood chipping compost instead of chains. There aren't any sinks, just hand sanitiser, and you need to bring your own loo roll.

The grass in the field is quite long and is absolutely drenched in dew from about 8pm until 11am the next day. Make sure you bring wellies for trekking over to the toilets at night/ first thing and take this into account when planning times for pitching/ taking down the tent!

There are lots of insects so bring bug spray.

We liked the rural, 'back to nature' feeling of the site, the amount of space there was, and the fact that you could choose your pitch. The showers were nice and hot and the eco loos were surprisingly odour free! Lovely laid back site.

Directions

Do not follow your satnav. Your satnav will attempt to take you through an uncrossable river. Unfortunately there is no exact postcode for the farm so please follow the directions below and we recommend printing out the map before you set off. Please note that the farm cannot be accessed from the village of Moreton. The campsite will be signposted from the road.

A35, from the west: From the A35, take the Tolpuddle Ball exit signposted Warmwell and Crossways. Turn left onto B3390. After approximately 3 miles, turn left at the crossroads, signposted Bovington Camp and Wareham. A little after a mile you will see a sign for Snelling Farm Campsite and you need to turn right down a forest track. Continue down the forest track for 1 mile. Take the only turning left (footpath signposted Bovington), which takes you between 2 fields. On the bend continue straight through the farm gate. The camping field is on your left.

A31, from the east: Exit the A31 at the Bere Regis roundabout - take the first exit, signposted Bere Regis, Milborne St Andrew and Bovington Camp. At the next roundabout take the 2nd exit signposted Wool and Bovington. Continue, following the road around to the left. After 2.5 miles, turn right for Bovington, Tincleton and Tank Museum. Continue for just over a mile, drive past the left hand turn for Clouds Hill/Bovington Tank Museum. You are taking the next left so start to slow down and you will see a signpost for Snelling Farm Campsite. Take the left hand turn down the forest track and continue down the track for approx 1 mile. Take the only turning left (footpath signposted Bovington), which takes you between 2 fields. On the bend continue straight through the farm gate. The camping field is on your left.

Local attractions

The farm is set on the Lawrence of Arabia Trail which has over six miles of cycling and walking through Moreton and Bovington Forest, suitable for families and children. Keen cyclists and walkers should also head into neighbouring Affpuddle Forest.

Moreton Ford is a ten-minute walk from the farm, perfect for a picnic by the shore, paddling, swimming and maybe even catching a small fish.

You can reach Moreton village in a 15-minute walk, for breakfast at Moreton Tearooms or a famed Dorset cream tea. The Snelling Farm Campsite owners also recommend a visit to the church of St Nicholas and the grave of the author TE Lawrence: the reason that hundreds of people visit Moreton every year.

The Tank Museum and Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre are three and five miles away. The Warmwell Leisure Centre is six miles away and has an indoor pool with wave machine and flume, a dry ski slope and an indoor soft play area.

If you like history, you may want to visit Lulworth Castle (home of Camp Bestival) ten miles away, or Corfe Castle which 12 miles away.

You can also have a walk or swim at nearby Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door beaches (ten miles from the site).

The pretty county town of Dorchester is seven miles far from the farm, for shopping or a historical day out. Well worth a visit is Thomas Hardy's Cottage where he wrote several novels including Under the Greenwood Tree and Far from the Madding Crowd.

For magnificent stately homes head to Kingston Lacey (17 miles) in Wimborne and explore the 8,500 acres. Athlehampton House (seven miles), built in around 1485, is a little closer and has prettily manicured gardens.

Both Sam and Cristabel grew up in the Isle of Purbeck, so should you want any advice about where to go or good local pubs to eat and drink in, then just ask.
