  • Quiet, family-friendly and rural site in a wildlife haven
  • Spectacular countryside views
  • Firepits for guests' use and two large barbecues available to hire
Your 'darling buds' will blossom at Primrose Fields in Dorset. This small and friendly site just outside of Wareham is only about a mile from famed ape rescue centre Monkey World, three miles from the Bovington Tank Museum and a short drive from spectacular Lulworth Cove on the Jurassic Coast. There are great walking and cycling routes from the site, such as the Frome Valley trail, the Hardy Way and the National Cycle Route 2. Make the most of starry nights and campfires on the peaceful wildflower meadow, which has views of Dorset heathland. Set up base by venerable oak trees and let the children play on the rope swing or chase butterflies. There are wild surroundings, but with the comfort of clean and well-maintained facilities. Pitches at Primrose Fields aren't set, so you can make your camp anywhere in the wildlife meadow, picking a spot by the forest or one with heathland views. Most of the field is flat for easy pitching. Walkers, cyclists, watersporters, couples, families and kids are all welcome on site. Campfires are allowed within firepits, with sustainably sourced wood and charcoal available to buy. Firepits and large barbecues are available for use on site. For food and supplies, nearby Wareham has a good selection of shops, cafés and pubs. A café and farm shop is about a mile away and a pub is next to the site.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Absolutely brilliant stay for two nights - very welcoming staff when entering the farm and really cool that you can just pick your spot yourself. Loved that you could borrow a fire pit and good quality fire wood for sale as well. Toilets and showers was nice and clean - warm showers as well. Good location for a vast amount of beautiful things to see. Will definitely return again one day.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Great location and great facilities for a simple campsite. Showers were very well thought out, clean and hot! Toilets were always clean despite being portaloos! Firepit was great and logs £10 per bag and were practically smokeless.

Disliked: Field was boggy and several vehicles got stuck but there was a tractor on hand to help. I realise you can't help the rain but roping off sections to help people avoid the worst areas would seem a good idea. Just a suggestion, didn't affect our stay!

From the manager: Many thanks I’m glad you enjoyed your stay. Yes the rain this spring has been unprecedented, some sites have not been able to open at all. Most of our site has been useable and we have been advising people where to pitch and on hand with the tractor if needed. We next open end of June for Tankfest and this should have resolved itself by then. If readers look back at older reviews they will see this is not normal for our site but the result of exceptional weather conditions.

The location is great, close to facilities and lovely beaches, right next…

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The location is great, close to facilities and lovely beaches, right next to a beautiful forest.

Disliked: Be aware that it gets very, very muddy. We've camped in a lot of rain at other locations and never experienced the ground turning to marsh land like this campsite did. It made us question whether it was actually on a flood plain or river bed. The water seemed to rise up from the ground. There has been a lot of rain recently so it may be worse than usual. The campsite manager was very helpful and pulled all of our cars out of the mud with his tractor.

From the manager: Many thanks for your comments about the sites location. The rain this spring has been unprecedented, some sites have not been able to open at all. We are certainly not in a river bed and are outside any flood plain. Most of our site has been useable and we have been advising people where to pitch and on hand with the tractor if needed and we still had a busy and enjoyable bank holiday weekend on the field. We next open end of June for Tankfest and the ground condition should have resolved itself by then. If readers look back at older reviews they will see this is not normal for our site but the result of exceptional weather conditions.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We really liked the amount of space there was, it was a busy weekend being bank holiday but it wasn't overcrowded. The loos were always very clean with plenty of loo roll and hand sanitiser. The family running the site were friendly and welcoming and always around if there were any questions. The firepits were great! We would definitely return again.

Liked: The facilities were great - loved the hot showers and the toilets were kept clean. The owners are also lovely! Our car wouldn’t start as we were trying to leave and they couldn’t have been kinder/more helpful. Would definitely return.

Disliked: Nothing really.

Local attractions

What a lot there is to do around this Wareham-based site, including many options without even having to fire up the car engine: the Frome Valley Trail is close to hand and the quiet country lanes around these parts are just the ticket for gentle cycling. The Bovington Tank Museum and the Jurassic Coast are both easily accessible from the site. Take a picnic or a catch of local fish and chips down to the grassy riverbank opposite the quay in Wareham for a restful afternoon, or wander around the town's Saxon defence walls for views in all directions. Another good walk is the Two Rivers route down to the backwaters of Poole Harbour, but if you’d rather get out on the water than look at it, you can hire a canoe, kayak or paddleboard for lazy drifting up the Frome. If you do decide to drive, the fab beaches, countryside and attractions of Purbeck and West Dorset are a short distance away. There's also the birdwatching and nature spotting of the RSPB Arne nature reserve just south of Wareham; splendid old Corfe Castle a 10-minute drive from there, and a steam train from the castle surrounds to the seaside resort and sandy beach of Swanage. North of Swanage is the sandy National Trust-managed Studland Bay.
