Knoll Farm Campsite: There are some activities for children and some games handy

General

  • Scenic farm site in the Hartland Moor National Nature Reserve
  • A 10-minute drive to Wareham and 25 minutes to Poole
  • Firepit hire and wood/kindling sales, plus yoga classes on request

Spacious fields, wide open skies and fab views towards castles and sea… If that ticks the boxes, make tracks for grassy Knoll Farm Campsite, a family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from Wareham.

This is a particularly scenic Dorset spot too: in the Hartland Moor National Nature Reserve and within 15 minutes of the Jurassic Coast, this is a prime destination for taking in world-famed scenery and coastal and countryside walks. It’s also close to lots of avenues for hiking and biking, so get pedalling on the 11-kilometre Sika Trail in Wareham Forest or turn feet towards the Purbeck Hills for walks, both about 10 minutes away.

Prefer strolls to be a little sandier? The site’s within easy reach of plenty of beaches, seaside towns and Jurassic Coast landmarks, including Lulworth Cove, Studland, Swanage, Man O’War and Durdle Door all within 25 minutes of base.

After all that, almost no energy need be expended back on site (although yoga classes are available on request): there’s no parking next to pitches, but there are trolleys and staff to help carry belongings from cars. Wood and kindling are for sale and there are firepits to hire, so no need to lug the barbecue along from home. Fancy a night off cooking? A pub serving local eats is about 10 minutes’ walk from the site.

This is a peaceful site whose facilities simply stretch to toilets, a washing-up area and a simple shower. Things hot up at weekends, with the large communal firepit being lit on Friday and Saturday evenings for social times, and a bunch of extras including yoga classes, live entertainment and on-site food.

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Generally quiet, relaxed vibe08/08/2022

The relaxed vibe, also Saturday evenings at the top of the field watching the sunset with everyone. The live music was a bit hit and miss. The food was a typical price for popup food stands at campsites - fortunately one stand took plastic money. The campsite was quiet at night, except Friday and Saturday when it was mostly quiet except for a few tents. I liked the fact that cars were only supposed to be on the main campsite to pick up and drop off, making it a lot safer. The campsite was also in easy cycling distance of the shops in Wareham, and there is a bus stop where the road meets the main road. The toilets and showers were very clean, and the hot water was definitely hot.

    Disliked:

I seem to have picked the noisy part of the field - the tent behind me played country music and Michael Jackson until late, and the people in the ones in front sat outside talking until gone 4AM (I think they were going to Camp Bestival).

The space and views… Porta loo’s in middle of the field are a great idea and we’re kept very clean with good top ups on loo roll.

    Disliked:

Got a bit noisier and loos not as clean once Friday/weekend started. But still wouldn’t put me off staying, I just liked the peacefulness that mid week brought.

We travelled as a couple of families with young children and teenagers. We had been really looking forward to our trip and weren't disappointed.
The site is in the most beautiful spot and if you choose your pitch on some of the higher ground you have the most spectacular view. Plenty of space and a joy to pick your own spot. We liked that once you were unpacked you parked your car in the car park, it meant the children could play without fear of cars going by all the time. Also it felt very safe as the children ran down to the barn to play we didn't worry.
We particularly loved the laid back hippy vibe at the site. The showers and loo block were great and always hot water and clean. Additional portaloos and sinks dotted around the site were kept lovely and clean too.
We rented a camp fire as did most campers which gave a great atmosphere as the sun went down.
On Saturday morning there was a wonderful free yoga session which was blissful (I'm so sorry I can't remember the name of the beautiful soul who ran it).
That evening there was a great tribute band and pretty much all of the campers were there with their drinks and the kids tucked into crepes. After we all climbed the hill to watch the sunset. Beautiful!
If you are looking for a site near Camp Bestival this is great, we went to the festival on the Friday and it was a15 min cab ride away.
We enjoyed so much that we've booked to go back in August.

Local attractions

Step into the past by wandering along to Corfe Castle, less than five minutes’ drive from base. The 11th-century castle was built by William the Conqueror and was one of the earliest to be built in England – that’s more than 1,000 years of history to explore around this spectacular ruin.

Staying in the days of yore is far from challenging too: take a ride on the Swanage Railway heritage steam trains, pay a visit to the spectacular 17th-century Lulworth Castle, call into the Clouds Hill cottage that TE Lawrence once called home (it’s a National Trust writers’ museum now), or rumble through the Bovington tank museum, all within 15 minutes of base.

Kids in tow will likely get up to all sorts of monkey business at Monkey World ape rescue centre 15 minutes from the site, but are more likely to be seen five minutes away swinging around the waterpark and mud trail at Dorset Adventure Park. Less active kids, on the other hand, might prefer to wander along to the Blue Pool – also within five minutes – to meet the Wareham Bears (that’s 200 teddies in their own model village).

Must see
