Holyrood Farm Campsite: Great views and relaxed camping at Holyrood Farm campsite.

General

  • Wild camping half a mile from Shaftesbury
  • Spectacular views over the Blackmore Vale
  • Campfires allowed: buy farm food from the team

The views from this Shaftesbury site, they are stunning.

As is the setting: small and secluded Holyrood Farm Campsite is in Dorset countryside overlooking the Blackmore Vale, within easy walking distance of the pubs and shops of Shaftesbury. It's close to several good footpaths for walking too – or you could take things up a notch with a stagger up Shaftesbury's Gold Hill, the famously steep cobbled street used several times as a set for the big and small screen…?

Those spectacular vale views are from Holyrood's working farm, with sheep, rare-breed pigs and Dexter cattle (standard), alpacas (less so) and a badgers' watch (nocturnal trips ahoy). The vibe is wild camping, but there's a shower available all season.

Campfires – of course – are allowed, to sizzle up the breakfast bacon and other farm food sold by Jason and his team (order these bits when you arrive): other food (and beery?) bits can be sorted 10 minutes' walk away at the supermarkets and independent shops of Shaftesbury.

Following a successful start to the site and taking feedback received into account, the owners have added flushing toilets, a washing-up area and improved access in and out, along with on-site checking in, firepits for rent and wood for sale. A permanent shower has also been added, with plenty of room to dry off and hang your clothes while showering.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Coronavirus update: there are no sausages for sale this year due to the current safety measures.

We were a bit late getting there but the owner was really flexible and just left us to it.

It was also a really quiet evening when we got there, perhaps because of weather, but it felt really nice and remote. Even though it was really quiet, we could easily get into Shaftesbury in the morning for breakfast which was a really lovely town.

The hot showers in the little wooden sheds were especially great !

    Disliked:

Be careful of parking on the lower tiers in really heavy rain otherwise you might risk getting stuck!

Lovely view, plenty of space. Lovely walk into Shaftesbury. Good value.

    Disliked:

Nothing. Facilities were fairy basic, no hot water but that was as advertised and perfectly reasonable for the money.

From the manager...

Thanks for your nice comments. We have hot water in the showers and toilet block, the washing up area is next on the list.

Everything! We stayed the Easter weekend and we honestly couldn't have stayed anywhere better (ok we were very lucky with the weather until departure day). The views are quite simply stunning - it is 360 degrees of lovely scenery. We could not have found anywhere more 'Eastery'. Sheep and their lambs running about and baaaing and beautiful church bells ringing out on Easter morning in the sun - bliss. The toilets were very clean and smelled fresh. Plenty of toilet roll and nice smelling soap. The 2 showers were rustic in little wooden huts but clean, nice and hot and more spacious than they looked. So many nature sounds, owls, chickens, a hilarious sounding donkey and peacocks. We've not been to inland Dorset really, always favouring the coast, but all of the surrounding area is just so beautiful. Jason was lovely and friendly and popped round with a firepit and logs and had a chat. We will 100% be going back. Also, despite being basic on facilities I thought it excellent value - I've seen less nice places even more basic (dirty portaloos etc) for almost double the price!

    Disliked:

This is not a dislike at all, just a heads up based on our experience. The field is huge but there are some bits that are not flat so be careful where you pitch up if you are not in just a tent. We thought we'd picked a fairly flat bit, but sadly on our last night the weather changed and there was torrential rain. Unfortunately, when we were all packed up ready to go (trailer tent/folding camper), we were stuck fast! Poor Jason had to come and rescue us and tow us out with his tractor. Felt bad as it was Bank Holiday Monday and he was not nearby when we rang. But he came and helped us just half an hour later and was lovely about it - thank you Jason, we really appreciated it (although part of me hoped we'd be stuck fast and would have to stay forever!)

Beautiful view, clean, quiet campsite. Good location. Easy to access and set up.

Fairly basic amenities, nothing fancy but all fully functional and clean.

Relaxed vibe. If it hadn't been so cold overnight for April, it would have been perfection!

Local attractions

If you're a UK sort of a certain age and can remember the famed ad for Hovis bread, nearby Gold Hill is where it was filmed – and did you know, big screen buffs, that the ad was directed by one Ridley Scott? The hill is five minutes' drive from Holyrood Farm Campsite, so totter up it for yourself when you get there; careering down afterwards on a bicycle very much recommended too.

Your tired legs should also make an in-town effort to see Shaftesbury's two museums, one beside the ruins of Shaftesbury Abbey and telling its tale, and the other back at the top of Gold Hill, telling the history of Shaftesbury via many artefacts from its surrounds. (Best to have a look at this latter on your first climb, to save having to trek back up.)

Day trips are within easy driving distance away from Shaftesbury: try the gardens at Stourhead House and Kingston Lacy 20 and 40 minutes away; the Fleet Air Arm Museum, telling the heady story of British aviation, half an hour away, and Dorchester about 50 minutes away.

Other good day trip options are Longleat Safari and Adventure Park, 30 minutes away; the small peninsula of golden sand at Sandbanks 45 minutes away, and the town of Bournemouth, about an hour from the farm. Or stay close to the site if you're around at the end of August, and use it as a peaceful base to come back to after days at the Great Dorset Steam Fair.
