General

  • Wild camping ten minutes' walk from Shaftesbury
  • Spectacular views over the Blackmore Vale
  • Campfires allowed

The views from this Shaftesbury site, they are stunning. As is the setting: small and secluded Holyrood Farm Campsite is in Dorset countryside overlooking the Blackmore Vale, within easy walking distance of the pubs and shops of Shaftesbury. It's close to several good footpaths for walking too – or you could take things up a notch with a stagger up Shaftesbury's Gold Hill, the famously steep cobbled street used several times as a set for the big and small screen…?

Those spectacular vale views are from Holyrood's working farm, with sheep and cattle (standard), alpacas (less so) and a badgers' watch (nocturnal trips ahoy). The vibe is wild camping, but there's a shower available all season.

Campfires – of course – are allowed, to sizzle up the sausages and other farm food sold by Jason and his team: other food (and beery?) bits can be sorted 10 minutes' walk away at the supermarkets and independent shops of Shaftesbury.

Following a successful start to the site and taking feedback received into account, the owners have added flushing toilets, a washing-up area and improved access in and out for 2017, along with on-site checking in, firepits for rent and wood for sale. A permanent shower was also added in 2017, with plenty of room to dry off and hang your clothes while showering.

Lovely views. Spacious field. Mostly fairly flat but interestingly varied so not boring. Fire drums if you want to make a fire. 15 minute walk into Shaftesbury and 10 minute walk to nearest pub, which is decent. Unbureaucratic when you arrive and you are left alone. Good for dogs. Good value. Would go again. If the toilets were better would give 5 stars as everything else was excellent.

    Disliked:

Only one gents WC and it is basic. Was a leak behind the loo. No soap. Steps up to the loo were massive and not the easiest to use. If you are elderly, or not 100% mobile, could be a problem. But to be fair the loo was useable for us. I imagine the limited toilets would be more of a problem when the site is very busy. Even when the site was not busy, men were using the ladies loo because the gents was in use......and my wife said it smelt like a gents!

A lovely peaceful place to stay. In walking distance of Shaftsbury which is a lovely small town and everyone was friendly.
The owner of the campsite was welcoming and friendly. Toilets and shower were clean.
Fire pits were for hire which was great you need a camp fire to sit round and relax.
Will go back for a few more nights when they are open again

my partner and I booked last minute - despite getting lost on the way the man running the place was fantastic, gave us further directions and we found them in no time. we arrived a little later than planned so it was already getting dark, yet the same man came back to deliver us a fire pit and some wood which we were very grateful for. fantastic views, not far from local shops which is great :) suitable for all ages, really recommend.

Amazing views and ample space, not at all cramped. Our children loved searching for bits of wood and sticks to put on our fire ( thanks to the quirky fire pits supplied that were scattered around the field)

Shower and toilet facilities were basic but actually better than we had expected.

    Soooo peaceful and relaxing!

    Good value for money.

Local attractions

If you're a UK sort of a certain age and can remember the famed ad for Hovis bread, nearby Gold Hill is where it was filmed – and did you know, big screen buffs, that the ad was directed by one Ridley Scott? The hill is five minutes' drive from Holyrood Farm Campsite, so totter up it for yourself when you get there; careering down afterwards on a bicycle very much recommended too.

Your tired legs should also make an in-town effort to see Shaftesbury's two museums, one beside the ruins of Shaftesbury Abbey and telling its tale, and the other back at the top of Gold Hill, telling the history of Shaftesbury via many artefacts from its surrounds. (Best to have a look at this latter on your first climb, to save having to trek back up.)

Day trips are within easy driving distance away from Shaftesbury: try the gardens at Stourhead House and Kingston Lacy 20 and 40 minutes away; the Fleet Air Arm Museum, telling the heady story of British aviation, half an hour away, and Dorchester about 50 minutes away.

Other good day trip options are Longleat Safari and Adventure Park 20 miles away; the small peninsula of golden sand at Sandbanks, 45 minutes away, and the town of Bournemouth, about an hour from the farm.

Must see

  • Stourhead House and Garden (9.4 miles)
  • Longleat (13.6 miles)
  • Kingston Lacy House and Gardens (14.5 miles)

National Trust

  • Stourhead (9.3 miles)
  • Philipps House and Dinton Park (10.9 miles)
