  • Wooden lodge on a farm with gorgeous Dorset country views
  • Two miles from Shaftesbury; less than an hour's drive from the coast
  • Off-grid, with lanterns, a campfire pit and a kitchen shelter
Classic English views don’t come much more classic than that of Shaftesbury’s Gold Hill, a steep cobbled street that had been admired for centuries even before a famous bread advert baked it into Britain’s collective imagination. Two miles south of the Dorset town is a glampsite that’s been inspired to take its name, and while you can’t actually see the famed street itself from Gold Hill Glamping there are some rather gorgeous country views to compensate. The glamping meadow at this working farm slopes gently westwards so it’s particularly well placed for the best of the evening light. There’s plenty to choose from when it comes to sussing out the top spot for sunset views. It's also spacious: there are three acres and just the one lodge, so you’ll be guaranteed a good serving of peace and space. And if you want some company? Have a chat with farmers Clea and Jonathan to see if you can watch the cows being milked or give the ponies a pat. It’s all suitably rural in vibe around here: there’s no electricity so lanterns and campfires will light the evenings, and by day you can wander into the neighbouring woodland to discover rope swings, fairy doors hidden among tree trunks and a stream to splash in. The lodge has a comfy double bed along with futons that you can convert into kids’ beds (you’ll just need to bring bedding). Outside, meanwhile, there’s a picnic bench, a campfire pit and a well-equipped kitchen shelter. Flushing loos and hot showers are up by the farmhouse a hundred metres away, and there’s also a composting loo closer to hand in the field.

Willow bell tent

Liked: Amazing accommodation within a farm. The host had a problem with our tents but they solved it by upgrading our stay transfering to their "Cornfield Lodge". So very happy abour it!. The hot tube, the shed with the table and sofas... Could not have been better :-) Thanks for sharing such a great place!

Local attractions

In keeping with the rural theme around Gold Hill Glamping, it’s only right that you take some of your wanders into the spectacular countryside, hills included. Melbury Hill is only 20 minutes’ walk from the site, and further afield there’s the Fontmell Down Nature Reserve (45 minutes’ walk). If it’s stunning landmarks you’re looking for, head to Shaftesbury (45 minutes’ walk or five minutes’ drive) – it's home to the site’s namesake, Gold Hill, an abbey and a heritage trail. There’s the iconic Stonehenge (35 minutes) stone circle further out, and Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door (50 minutes) along the Jurrasic coast for gorgeous coastal scenery. For a little of the old times on your travels, head to the ruins of Old Wardour Castle (25 minutes) or Kingston Lacy (25 minutes) to see a splendid stately home. Handily, Larmer Tree Gardens (20 minutes), a popular wedding venue, is also close to Gold Hill Glamping, as is the Compton Abbas Airfield (10 minutes), which runs training flight experiences.
