  • Well-equipped glamping units with glorious views across Blackmore Vale
  • Less than a 10-minute drive from Shaftesbury’s Gold Hill and abbey
  • Private verandahs, kitchens and bathrooms; brook walks on site
If the idea of glamping alongside two sows called Beauty and Belle gets an oink of approval from you, it might be high time to add Black Pig Retreats to your bucket list. This family-run glamping site on a pretty smallholding in the Dorset countryside is a rural hideout away from roads – so it’s a firm fave of the on-site sheep, horses, dogs, cats and chickens as well as humans seeking peace and quiet. The mini farm’s slick units are based inside a wildflower meadow and come with private verandahs for hanging out by the firepit as the sun sets each evening. Each accommodation option also has private kitchen and bathroom facilities (so if you’re not keen on that sharing lark there’s none of that here). Weekending with the wee ones is always easier when you have your own amenities, and the site’s owners have added to these to help make trips all the better. Travel cots, highchairs and plastic cutlery and bowls are all available to simplify stuff for the grownups, plus a box of toys is on hand to keep the kids busy when they’re not off playing games in the meadow or paddling in the on-site brook. If you’re reckoning the family will want to roam further than the wildflower meadow, plenty of chances to venture off into the surrounds can be had from this site overlooking Blackmore Vale. Shaftesbury's steep Gold Hill with views down over thatched cottages edged by cobblestones is a 30-minute walk away (as are the traditional pubs and shops of this Dorset town made famous by its appearance in the old Hovis bread ad...), and Shaftesbury Abbey, Museum and Garden Trust is about the same distance for a shuffle about.

Local attractions

After browsing Shaftesbury's two museums, veer off further to the crumbling Old Wardour Castle (20 minutes to the east inside the Cranborne Chase Area of Natural Beauty), dropping by the magical Shute House Garden (10 minutes) for a bit of contrast on your way. Grand gardens can also be glimpsed at Stourhead, an estate with more than a thousand hectares of land about a 20-minute drive. This place is massive – it also has a Palladian-style mansion, a village and woodland to tramp through. Done with wanders? Set your sights skywards with a trip to the Fleet Air Arm Museum (35 minutes) for the history of UK aviation or journey to Africa (without leaving England) by visiting the animals at Longleat Safari and Adventure Park within half an hour’s drive. A reminder that you’re definitely still in the UK will come during a trip to Stonehenge, one of the nation’s most well-known tourist sights, which is also about 30 minutes away from the park...
