  • Scenic and friendly 14-acre meadow site with stunning panoramic views
  • Within 20 minutes' drive of Poole, the Isle of Purbeck and Bournemouth
  • A short walk from Lytchett Matravers' village pubs and shop
As the name suggests, The View Campsite is all about its surroundings. This is a really special spot with gorgeous panoramic views overlooking the Isle of Purbeck, where the eye often can see as far as the famous Jurassic Coast, Corfe Castle and the Lulworth hills. Come here if you fancy waking up to the sound of birdsong (one reviewer spotted 22 species on site) and watching wild deer wandering through the fields. In keeping with its wildlife haven theme, this site has all-natural camping meadows where you can immerse yourself in the Dorset countryside and appreciate the simple pleasures of outdoor living. You get to choose whether you want a view of the Purbeck Hills from the higher meadows or fancy a secluded spot lower down in the valley glade – in all, there are 14 acres where you can pick your own plot. You can look forward to a warm welcome from owners Cathy and Kate (plus their little gang of mischievous animals…), who will be on hand should you wish to hire a firepit, or simply to point out places to head for a stroll around the village of Lytchett Matravers (under a mile from base), where pubs, a café and a park can be easily added to the itinerary. Sometimes, there are things to join in on site – gather around the communal firepit, perhaps, where you can chat with fellow guests, listen to local musicians or attend a meditation session or nature talk. On occasion, there are homemade pizza evenings to take part in. Other shared facilities are nicely spread out too, so you'll never have to wander far to fetch fresh water or to use the site's upcycled composting and flushing toilets. A small number of showers are also available to guests.

The View Meadows non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Cathy and Kate were both so lovely and welcoming Cathy gave us a short tour of the campsite when we arrived so we knew everything that was available to us. The shower and flushing toilets were good and we enjoyed the use of a fire pit during our weekend. Good atmosphere and views. Would stay again and recommend to others. 👍🏻✈️ thanks for having us.

Disliked: Not a huge amount of pitch space to choose from but this could be due to it being the bank holiday weekend. Our pitch was on a slope so we were sliding down our bed at night 😂

The View Meadows non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Quiet peaceful back to nature, relaxing campsite with spacious pitches and lovely panoramic views. The owners were very welcoming, friendly and had a chat with us each day to ensure we were having a good vacation. There were a few sheep and chickens on site which really made us feel away from London. Showers and toilets always clean, rustic style. There was a lovely communal area where on the weekends they have live music. We will be back again to experience that. Great location for exploring Dorset!

Bell tent

Liked: Great friendly site with greasy hosts who will go out of their way to make sure that your stay is fantastic, evening around the fire with everyone joining in with music and food was way out of the norm but VERY well received. Will definitely be back!

Disliked: Only let down was the toilets and shower block was a little spread out, apart from that good all around!

Local attractions

Within a short drive is the stunning RSPB nature reserve at Arne peninsula (15 minutes). Famous Jurassic Coast sites like Lulworth Cove (30 minutes), Studland Bay (30 minutes) and Durdle Door (30 minutes) are within easy reach too, as are historic Corfe Castle (30 minutes) and Chesil Beach (35 minutes). Poole Harbour (15 minutes) and award-winning Bournemouth and Swanage beaches (20 minutes) are all within an easy drive too. Exciting activities are available for those wishing to explore – Sandbanks (15 minutes), Wareham (15 minutes) and Wimborne (15 minutes) have boat or kayak hire, allowing you to ride the waves or float down scenic rivers. Children, meanwhile, will be captivated by mischievous monkeys at nearby Monkey World (as seen on TV; 15 minutes). On the doorstep of the campsite is award-winning Farmer Palmer’s (five minutes), an adventure farm, while those who want a lively atmosphere have bowling, entertainment, restaurants and a cinema 15 minutes away at Tower Park. Boat trips leave Poole (15 minutes) to see bird colonies or can take you over to Brownsea Island, where there are plenty of tempting spots for a picnic and rare red squirrels. The South West Coast Path also starts (or finishes) in Poole. It's 630 miles all in, and the clearly marked trail will sort you out with ample opportunities to take in fine views and spot wildlife. The seven-mile stretch between Poole and Swanage is an attractive option and can comfortably be done in a day if you take the ferry past Old Harry Rocks on your return leg.
