  • Peaceful site on a family-run farm 10 minutes' drive from Lyme Regis
  • A 10-minute drive from Charmouth beach; 15 mins from West Bay
  • Gorgeous views over west Dorset countryside
Some folk seek out stacks of swish facilities for their hols; others would gladly trade all those pools, clubhouses and swish bathrooms for serene space and stunning scenery. Those that fall into the latter group should certainly take a look at Penn Farm Campsite, a peaceful and pretty site on a family-run farm within the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and 10 minutes’ drive from Lyme Regis. Wisely, the owners here realised that nothing they could possibly install would top the gorgeous views over the west Dorset countryside, so they’ve embraced the natural setting and kept the facilities low key. The setup here stretches to a couple of toilets, a shower, a washing-up area and facilities to deal with rubbish and chemical disposal; anything else you require to keep you happy you’ll need to bring along with you. Among the bits you might like to consider packing are barbecues for evenings spent out in the open in the company of a few beers and bangers as the sun sets. And if you’ve got a dog that you feel might appreciate the scenery too, feel free to bring them along to get out on country and coastal walks. Speaking of the coast – that’s the Jurassic Coast, a fine stretch 10 minutes’ drive away for beaches, boat trips, fishing and fossil hunting. For other days out, Exeter, Yeovil, Taunton and Dorchester are all within a 45-minute drive.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked The wildness of it. Long grasses with mowed pathways. No fixed pitches, pitch where you want. Peace and tranquility. Easy access to Lyme Bay.

Disliked Other campers who were noisy quite late. Not owners fault!

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Beautiful campsite. Unspoilt and perfect.
The toilets and shower facilities were clean and the recycling area was kept tidy. Fridge and freezer were a great touch and helped us keep things cool throughout our stay. Lyme Regis was walkable, it take about an hour though. We had a wonderful weekend and hope to return

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked The views, the facilities, the location, the owners, the fact you are so spaced out, the long grass between pitches - gives it a wild camping feel.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Great site, lots of space & freedom to pitch up anywhere without close neighbours & amazing countryside views

Disliked Just off a busy A road
We were in a motorhome which was fine, access if towing could be tricky
Ideally you need a car/motorhome to visit Charmouth & Lyme Regis, not easily walkable

Liked Not overcrowded and can choose your pitch with loads of space. You have a choice of 2 separate fields. 2 showers and washing up area. Small shed with use of fridge and plugs to charge phones. Close to Lyme Regis and Charmouth beaches. Will come back next year for sure!

Local attractions

It’s a very fine part of the world, the Jurassic Coast – and guests at Penn Farm will be close to one of its huge draws, the fossil hunting mecca of Charmouth, just under 10 minutes’ drive from the site. Chesil beach (half an hour) and Durdle Door (an hour) are both worth exploring too, and of course there are some stunning walks to be had along the coast path pretty much wherever you choose. Telly fans might already recognise the backdrop of West Bay (15 minutes) if they’ve ever watched ITV's Broadchurch; also familiar to foodies will be the backdrop of chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s pad River Cottage, around 20 minutes’ drive away. If you fancy having a go at your own bit of outdoor cheffing, perhaps you’d also like to have a whirl at catching your own supper on a fishing trip from Lyme Regis (10 minutes). If you’ve brought the kids along, it’s a good idea to plan days out in Dorchester (35 minutes), where there’s a dinosaur museum and teddy bear museum, at the farm park at Kingston Maurward (40 minutes) or at Weymouth’s Sea Life Centre (45 minutes).
