Lyons Gate Holiday Park: Plenty of space

General

  • Peaceful woodland site in Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Half an hour from Jurassic Coast beaches; 20 minutes from Dorchester
  • Four fishing lakes, woodland trails and on-site shop

A peaceful spot in Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, within easy reach of the famed Jurassic Coast and with lots nearby for history and heritage buffs? Sounds like a lucky catch… and that’s not all to reel you in at Lyons Gate Holiday Park, a family-friendly site less than 10 minutes’ drive from the scenic Dorset village of Cerne Abbas.

This site is heaven for anyone angling to do a spot of fishing on their hols: there are four well-stocked lakes here where casting a line could land perch, chub, roach, tench, rudd, barbel or 20-pound+ carp, and there’s night fishing (by request) to add another layer of challenge – plenty to keep novices and experts entertained for days.

Not hooked on spending getaways on the banks? Nature trails crisscross the woodland on site, or you can venture out into the AONB to wander the Jurassic Coast, lounge around on sandy beaches, and follow the Thomas Hardy trail to see Dorset as the poet and novelist did.

No bins only at the top of the site. Too far to walk. Shop not got anything. Management friendly and the warden

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments. The reason the bins are in the car park away from the main site is they could attract vermin and they become smelly when the weather is warm which we are sure you would not want. The shop only carries limited supplies in low season carrying a bit more stock when the site is busy so we do not waste to much. if there was something you really wanted you should have asked we may of been able to help.
Hope to see you again.

Ideal location and friendly owners03/05/2022

The friendly owners who couldn’t do enough for you. The site around the lakes lovely and calm and ideal if you enjoy catching a fish or two. You are surrounded by woodland with shorter and longer walks you can take if you wish too. Good location for my short trip.

    Disliked:

It has been mentioned in other reviews, but paying 20 pence for hot water in the wash up area and 20p/50p for a shower. In reality I paid £1 per shower as I needed the extra time to condition my hair otherwise I would still be there now trying to brush out the tangles! 😂 The other point I’d like to make for future campers is that there is no Wifi. The owners have told Pitchup to take it off their website but it’s still saying the site has wifi at the pitch. For the purpose of my trip it wasn’t the end of the world, but I also didn’t have a phone signal so I was unable to make any contact to the outside world from the site. My phone provider is Virgin.

From the manager...

Hi Robina
Thank you for your kind comments. Hope yourself and monkey are well.
Regarding the showers we are taking the comments back to the owners but it does say on Pitch up showers are payable by 50p.Unfortunately wi-fi and phone networks are still being worked.

The facilities are very old, could do with new ones, as for fishing there are to many people not staying at the site let in so over fished

From the manager...

Hello
We will of course pass your comments back to the owners about the toilets and showers. In regards to the fishing the site is also open to the general public as well, many of whom are regulars to the site enjoying the successful fishing here.

We stayed at the site over the easter bank holiday. We were made to feel very welcome by the park managers who went out of their way to ensure our stay was a good one.
Our van was pitched up on the edge of the fishing lake, and although we don't fish ourselves, we were able to drink in the wildlife and the beautiful scenery.
Very peaceful site, short walk to the local pub. We will return!

    Disliked:

The original owners did not allow children and we did feel a bit unwelcome by the seasonal pitches, but the new managers were quick to reassure us that the site was very happy to have families.

The shower block wasn't the nicest and could do with an overhaul, but the water was warm and there was plenty of space.

From the manager...

It was an absolute pleasure having you on site and look forward to having you to stay again. Thank you for you lovely review and we will take your comments regarding the showers back to the owners.
See you soon

Local attractions

Cerne Abbas has been called ‘Britain’s most desirable village’ to live in and it’s easy to see why. Start stays with a ramble around the stunningly pretty village, stopping in at the pubs to sample the local beer and tottering along to Cerne Abbey where the village’s tradition of brewing began.

Of course, beer isn’t what Cerne Abbas is most famous for, so a trip to the Cerne Abbas Giant (a chalk hill figure of a happily anatomically correct man) comes highly recommended. There’s a viewing spot in the village and closer looks are a stroll away along a waymarked circular trail managed by the National Trust.

If naked desires (sorry) skew more towards grand estates, Minterne House and Gardens are less than five minutes from base – the house isn’t open to the public, but it’s a spectacular backdrop to wanders among Himalayan gardens, designed in the style of Capability Brown.

More urban days are within easy reach at Dorchester, 20 minutes away. The town is the birthplace of Thomas Hardy, and visits to Hardy’s Cottage and his home later in life (Max Gate) are absolute musts. It’s not just literary history here either: there’s the Tutankhamun Exhibition, a Roman amphitheatre, a display of Terracotta Warrior replicas, and a handful of museums for everything from teddy bears to dinosaurs.

Must see

  • Hardy's Birthplace (9.6 miles)
  • Mapperton House & Gardens (10.7 miles)
  • Montacute House (12.1 miles)

National Trust

  • Hardy's Cottage (9.6 miles)
