Lyons Gate Holiday Park: Pitches by the lake (photo added by manager on 18/08/2022)

General

  • Peaceful woodland site in Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Half an hour from Jurassic Coast beaches; 20 minutes from Dorchester
  • Four well-stocked fishing lakes on site, plus woodland trails

A peaceful spot in Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, within easy reach of the famed Jurassic Coast and with lots nearby for history and heritage buffs? Sounds like a lucky catch… and that’s not all to reel you in at Lyons Gate Caravan Park and Fishery, a family-friendly site less than 10 minutes’ drive from the scenic Dorset village of Cerne Abbas.

This site is heaven for anyone angling to do a spot of fishing on their hols: there are four well-stocked lakes here where casting a line could land perch, chub, roach, tench, rudd, barbel or 20-pound+ carp, and there’s night fishing (by request) to add another layer of challenge – plenty to keep novices and experts entertained for days.

Not hooked on spending getaways on the banks? Nature trails crisscross the woodland on site, or you can venture out into the AONB to wander the Jurassic Coast, lounge around on sandy beaches, and follow the Thomas Hardy trail to see Dorset as the poet and novelist did.

AA 4 pennants

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

A charge of £0.50 applies for the use of the shower.

Reception is unmanned after 6:30 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

If reception is closed on arrival: please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.

Fishing is £6 per person per day for up to 2 rods.

No mobile phone signal, greenery everywhere, quiet, woods for walking and exploring. The fishing lakes so close to the pitches. Helpful owners. Would stay again off season.

    Disliked:

The pitches are close to each other however, we stayed in October and the site was not busy but in the summer it would be too busy with people for us. Toilets dated but clean and perfectly usable.

Not a site for tourers.08/10/2023

  • Electric gravel and hardstanding touring pitch (lake view)

  • Liked:

Not much really. Ok if you like fishing.

    Disliked:

Not a site for touring units. There were only about 9 hardstanding pitches for tourers.
Most of the site was taken up with Seasonal/permanent caravans and motor homes.
The 9 hardstandings were the furthest pitches from the old outdated sanitary block, where you had to put coins in meters for a shower and even for hot water to wash up.

From the manager...

Sorry you did not enjoy your stay at Lyons Gate. It does say we are a fishery on pitch up so you know that when you book and you are also advised there is a charge for the hot water in the showers.

This was our second visit and was as lovely as before, lovely clean facilities and very peaceful. Very relaxing watching people fishing and we were lucky with the weather. The site has no phone signal but this did not worry us as we wanted to get away from it all. Did the walk (approx 2 miles) to the local pub through the woods and fields and it was beautiful, you can get a phone signal in the woods if you need to contact the outside world. Pub is also highly recommended and dog friendly.

Phil and Mandy made us feel very welcome and went over and above and we are very thankful for their hospitality, we will definitely be visiting again.

We loved how peaceful it was! Sitting in the dusk enjoying the sound of woodland and lake life, plus some stargazing, was absolutely blissful. The owners were incredibly friendly and welcoming and Phil took the time to talk us through everything as it was our first visit. We had two pitches right on the lake and it was amazing being right by the water; even if you weren't fishing it was just a lovely place to be. The shop was good, and 20p actually gives you a seriously long shower! We caught a lot of bream the first day and then a few really nice carp our last evening, but to be honest being able to just be by the water in such lovely peaceful surroundings was good for the soul. BBQs allowed off the ground and it was just a really nice place to spend a weekend. I was sorry we hadn't booked for longer!

    Disliked:

Barely anything to dislike! Yes there are a lot of caravans that seem quite close together but everyone was incredibly respectful of each other and the peace and quiet, and we absolutely never felt encroached on at all - plus there was no intrusive noise from anywhere on site. Facilities absolutely serviceable and although some may complain they're a bit tired I have to say they were spotlessly clean and more than good enough for us. No WiFi but we knew that before we booked and honestly it didn't do us any harm to disconnect for 48 hours

From the manager...

Thank you so much for a lovely review, and what weather we had and the site is stunning when the sun's out.
We hope to be able to welcome you back to Lyons Gate sometime soon.

Local attractions

Cerne Abbas has been called ‘Britain’s most desirable village’ to live in and it’s easy to see why. Start stays with a ramble around the stunningly pretty village, stopping in at the pubs to sample the local beer and tottering along to Cerne Abbey where the village’s tradition of brewing began.

Of course, beer isn’t what Cerne Abbas is most famous for, so a trip to the Cerne Abbas Giant (a chalk hill figure of a happily anatomically correct man) comes highly recommended. There’s a viewing spot in the village and closer looks are a stroll away along a waymarked circular trail managed by the National Trust.

If naked desires (sorry) skew more towards grand estates, Minterne House and Gardens are less than five minutes from base – the house isn’t open to the public, but it’s a spectacular backdrop to wanders among Himalayan gardens, designed in the style of Capability Brown.

More urban days are within easy reach at Dorchester, 20 minutes away. The town is the birthplace of Thomas Hardy, and visits to Hardy’s Cottage and his home later in life (Max Gate) are absolute musts. It’s not just literary history here either: there’s the Tutankhamun Exhibition, a Roman amphitheatre, a display of Terracotta Warrior replicas, and a handful of museums for everything from teddy bears to dinosaurs.

Must see

  • Hardy's Birthplace (9.6 miles)
  • Mapperton House & Gardens (10.7 miles)
  • Montacute House (12.1 miles)

National Trust
