General

  • Secluded wild camping spots on a working Dorset farm near Dorchester
  • A 20-minute drive to the Jurassic Coast; 15 minutes to Chesil Beach
  • Woodland walks on site; five minutes’ drive from pubs and shops

Offering low-impact and secluded wild camping, Loscombe Farm is located near Dorchester in Dorset. There's plenty of variety here: pitches are in woods, fields, near bridleways or in open fields, and groups are welcome to camp together, bring a bit of folk music and get down to some serious catching up. The private land is also yours to wander at will.

You're free to build a campfire here – and to make that easy, the owners offer wood to fuel it at a small charge. Chances are they might join you around the fire to swap stories and show you Stone Age flint arrowheads found on the farm.

It really is wild here… there’s no electricity (bring torches please) and all the water will need boiling on the campfire. Compost loos are available, and you can get phone reception in some places but not all – roaming wifi works reasonably well if you can’t give up outside contact completely.

Some areas are driver accessible, others not. But fear not, if you do have to park and walk a short distance to your pitch, the owners will help out with transport. It’s almost always possible to find a secluded pitch, meaning there can be little contact with fellow guests unless you actively choose it.

There are some basic stores for essentials and fantastic pubs within five minutes’ drive, as well as in Dorchester (10 minutes – also good for shopping) or Weymouth (20 minutes).

Loscombe Farm is set in a valley surrounded by rolling hills and beautiful views. The tent pitches are either available in a flat camping field, where the compost loo, water and sink are found or in the adjacent sheep pasture which is on a hill edged by forest. We camped in the pasture and were able to find a flat pitch next to the tree line. The hill sheltered us from road noise and throughout our stay there were only a couple of other tents in the pasture, which is huge and so no-one was close to us and we felt alone, which was great. It was wonderful to wake up to the sheep grazing nearby (take a long lead and strong peg for your dog). Very peaceful. Great location, close to local beaches, 5 min drive or a walk to the local garage with small shop. Lovely owners. You can even get wifi and a phone signal if you really want to. We boiled and drank the water, no issue. Loved it. Civilised wild camping.

We had an amazing time in Dorset staying at Loscombe Farm. It is located not far from Dorchester so if you needed supplies it was just a short drive. The scenery is amazing and there so many places you can go for a walk. It is definitely more on the survival side kind of camping with almost no reception and no access to electricity. I think what got me the most is the distance to the toilet - although we were the closest to it- you definitely need to act on your first urge unless you are planning to run :) The hosts were so nice and helpful - we had car trouble (my battery died while using headlights to help us pitch in the night) so we walked to the farm and thankfully Ellie was able to give us a jump battery. She also gave us tips on where to go and what to visit. If we decide to visit the South again I will definitely come back and I would 100 percent recommend staying here. Thank you for letting us stay at your beautiful farm.

    Disliked:

    Sheep - they talk a lot :)

From the manager...

Hi Helena, I’m so pleased the car was easily rectified. You pitched perfectly in the end, no floods no fires? Great to have you with us and you can camp nearer to the loo next time, or bring your own. Many people do and we support this. Sorry about the sheep, talking, yes they are very chatty creatures.
See you next year.

Everything! So much space which made choosing a secluded pitch really easy; freedom to roam the farm, woodland and surrounding footpaths; sharing the space with buzzards, kestrels, woodpeckers, owls, deer, bats and of course the resident sheep; meteor shower; compost toilet; wonderfully friendly Ellie who was just a text message away when we needed help!
We had such a restful week and would like to move in permanently.

O Maya and family you are our perfect sort of stay and we would live you to move in perfectly! So observant and natural and happily taking it all in. It was nice to go horse hiking with you girls x

Everything. The owners (and their sheep) were friendly and welcoming and very accommodating. The yurts are wonderful, lots of space, with very comfortable beds. We had all three plus a couple of tents for our extended family so we had the whole field to ourselves. It was blissfully peaceful with fantastic views and a nice big tree for shade. The kitchen is equipped with everything we needed and the sun-warmed shower was great.

    Disliked:

From the manager...

It was an absolute joy to have you all ‘en famille’! You arranged the outdoor tables and fire to be in the shade and near the field kitchen and the kids seemed to enjoy playing games and being on rope swings, heading down to the beach etc
It will be great to see you again next year.
Sending best wishes for the rest of the summer.

Not a dislike but a suggestion maybe a map at the entrance to show where the loos/showers are and mark area where we can pitch up as we felt confused when we got to the site :)

The camp kitchen was spotlessly clean and not a bug in sight! Cannot fault this place we will certainly be returning thank you Ellie and Nick x

Aww thanks Annie. `there is nothing we like more than seeing dogs having a holiday with their families! you were a perfect delight to have around. Im sop please you liked the yurt with its pitcher plant and the kitchen with gold teapot! your fire was fine but today someone almost set another field alight!! Eekk, our worst nightmare, your yurt is the only space for fires until it rains now. Thanks because you made us work out how that space could be safe enough.
we do so hope you'll come again.
