Loscombe Farm: Yurt pitch

General

  • Secluded wild camping spots on a working Dorset farm near Dorchester
  • A 20-minute drive to the Jurassic Coast; 15 minutes to Chesil Beach
  • Cosy lodgings with walks on site; close to pubs, shops and watersports

Loscombe Farm offers low-impact and secluded wild camping near Dorchester in Dorset. There are pitches in woods, fields, near bridleways or in open fields, and you can choose where to go, so groups can camp together, bring a bit of folk music and get down to some serious catching up.

You are free to build a campfire and the owners offer wood to fuel it at a small charge. Chances are they will be joining you around the fire to swap stories and show you Stone Age flint arrowheads found on the farm.

It really is wild here … there’s no electricity and all the water needs boiling. Compost loos are available, and you can get phone reception in some places but not all – roaming wifi works reasonably well if you can’t give up outside contact completely.

Some areas are driver accessible, others not. But fear not, if you do have to park and walk a short distance with your camping gear, the owners will help out. They also welcome cyclists and horse riders – the latter please give advance notice so grazing can be arranged if needed. It's almost always possible to find a secluded pitch here, meaning there can be little contact with other guests unless you actively choose it.

An easy walk from the camping fields is to the National Trust-owned Hardy Monument (40 minutes’ walk), a vantage point with views over the Jurassic Coast (20 minutes’ drive), and you can take a dip in the sea off Chesil Beach (15 minutes) or try paddleboarding and kitesurfing off Portland (40 minutes). There are some fantastic pubs and restaurants for eating out locally, as well as in Dorchester (10 minutes – also good for shopping) or Weymouth (20 minutes).

Please note

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Group bookings of 10 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

No electric barbecues allowed.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

    - Ellie was a fantastic and friendly host who had numerous recommendations to choose from.
    - The view around is so peaceful and you're treated to the loveliest sunsets and if you're lucky a very dramatic moon rising over the hill.
    - Spacious yurt with a small fireplace, which came in handy in the late evenings.
    - Numerous options for activities nearby.
    - The Friendliest dog, whose name we forgot to ask for.
    - Giant courgettes, which were very tasty when grilled.

Loved so much wilderness around us, woods, meadows, silence, unobstructed far views, freedom of choice where to camp, real fires every evening... loved so much our boys didn't want to leave! So we extended our stay for couple more days! Easy acess for Weymouth and all the lovely beaches on Jurassic Coast... perfect for people who want to be close to nature, relax and unwind. 🥰

Absolutely everything it was a world away from the hustle and bustle of our busy day to day lives… we stayed 2 nights and could’ve easily stayed longer. Ellie our host was absolutely amazing, very helpful down to earth and Akins soul with lots of quirk. The scenery is breathtaking from the cosy evening log burner to the fresh and dewy mornings this is a romantic, wild working farm get away which I would recommend to any walk of life 100% will go back again. Thank you again Ellie for an amazing experience xx

Stunning views. Wild and quiet. This was a great weekend of wild camping. The space on offer was a real highlight and meant we felt like had our own perfect secluded spot. Highly recommend if you enjoy getting back to nature in a stunning environment. The owners were great as well….even delivered us freshly picked courgettes on our first night. We will definitely be back!

Friendly and helpful host, who really went out of the way to make us welcome! These are very back to nature pitches on a wild un-mowed field with lots of space to spread out, set in a verdant valley with views of Hardy's monument (20 minute walk away through forest). There is a composting toilet - bring loo roll (we brought our own portaloo) and a stainless steel sink with a hose for washing up (water must be boiled if using for drinking). Great to be able to have a fire (fire pack available to purchase including firestarters, kindling and wood). The host also has an honesty box on the welcome table with a selection of things you may have forgotten, like soap etc, which is so thoughtful and pretty much sums up the welcoming greeting. We'll definitely be back. Helpful hint - this is a working farm - bring wellies as there will be little surprises in the field to watch out for so best to walk to and from the toilet in wellies ;)

Great to be able to review our campers and we give these guys 10/10 especially bringing their own loo! We will encourage this and we will always have loo rolls available on the welcome table too (loos stocked).
Thanks for your accurate description, we are a working farm and it's been hay making and weaning lambs this weekend. Wellies are a VERY GOOD IDEA!
We look forward to your next visit. Hope the journey back was better than the one down.
