Stay with the alpacas
The alpacas
From the shower and toilet veiw

  • Eco-friendly off-grid campsite 10 minutes’ drive from Bridport, Dorset
  • Jurassic Coast beaches five minutes’ drive; Dorchester 20 minutes
  • Smallholding with alpacas and goats; animal meets-and-greets available
Alpacas and goats ever featured in your holiday plans? Well, now they can, for Flowerdew Farm is an eco-friendly working alpaca and goat smallholding tucked among hills in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. When you rock up to stay at this two-acre site, the owners of the furry troops are happy to offer feeding sessions, alpaca meet-and-greets and lots of other animal-inspired activities – you get to sleep on camping fields right next to the animals too. As the place is run on sustainable lines, facilities (shared flushing toilets, one hot shower, rain-harvested water at drinking points) are off grid wherever possible and completely environmentally friendly. The vibe is basic but comfy chic, with lots of upcycling of building materials to be as kind to the environment as possible. Please take eco-friendly products with you so you don’t put anything toxic on to the land. For safety reasons, you'll also need to raise any barbecues off the ground (firepit rental is available), and the owners ask that you buy their clean-burning logs rather than bring your own. If there’s a weather warning, drought or fire ban, barbecuing will be put on hold. Luckily there’s a decent pub in Puncknowle village (five minutes’ walk) that will sort you out a meal if it's not barbecue weather. The camping fields are car-free zones, and wheelbarrows are on hand for lugging your gear to your pitch. If you’re exploring locally and don’t want to use the car, e-bikes are available for hire.

Non-electric grass and earth campervan pitch

Liked: This site definitely has the eco friendly feel. Clare our host was so attentive for our stay. We arrived in a yellow weather warning ⚠️, howler this site has a great barn equipped for you to use, to play games, charge your phones, eat and stretch your legs while the weather passes. This small holding has an opportunity to feed the animals. Waking up in the natural surroundings was a treat. The site is currently having additional hard standing pitches being added for all year round camping. A short walk away there is a fantastic pub, welcoming which serves a great meal, with welcoming staff.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Location and peacefulness

Disliked: Rudeness of owner, she came across rather patronising and nagging, stressed and unfriendly. Overgrazing evident in animal fields. It was very expensive as she charged £30 for a tent and £40 for a campervan, £70 total in an almost empty field in mid september! There was only one portaloo, a compost toilet would have suited the ethos of the place.

Barry bell tent (comfort)

Liked: Chilled, back-to basics, low carbon footprint camping. The site is small and cosy with fun details everywhere. The host, Claire, really loves what she does and makes you feel so welcome, we'd love to come again. Even my children calmed down. We stayed in Barry Bell Tent and had everything we needed for campfire cooking and a restful stay.

Barry bell tent (comfort)

Liked: Location. The look and feel of the place. The snug with boardgames etc. The layout of the camping field next to alpacas and goats. Customer service and welcome from the campsite staff

Disliked: Toilet facilities are not great (2 portaloos) and only 1 shower (fixed at a hot temperature). A peaceful looking place but not completely peaceful at night because of the cows on the next door farm, and seagulls in the morning. It's all part of being out in the country and near the sea, so bring earplugs if you're staying here

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for the kind words on the likes. Sorry to know that you were not happy with countryside noises. We do clearly have on our socials and website and listings that we have event toilets and one shower. These are thoroughly checked and cleaned andweree checked all weekend, we advise on arrival we can always change the temperature, but everyone this weekend advised me it was OK> Without knowing it was too hot for you, we cant help on site and adjust accordingly. We have had plenty of great reviews on our facilities, including on our events toilets.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: A brilliant little campsite, lovely owner who you can tell has a real passion for her business. Great to have the goats and alpacas close to the camping field as it meant my son could just wander over to their enclosures whilst I could keep an eye on him. All the facilities were lovely and clean. Had a quick tour on arrival to show where everything is and nothing was too much trouble. The campsite is in a nice peaceful spot but easy to access the jurassic coast from it. Local pub in puncknowle does good food and drink.

From the manager: Thanks so much Ed, lovely guests and thanks for the kind words.

Local attractions

Local walks start right at your pitch, or you can join the South West Coast Path at Hive Beach (five minutes’ drive) for some serious clifftop yomps with spectacular views along the Jurassic Coast clifftops. Get out for bracing walks along Chesil Beach from West Bexington, admire the colourful wild flowers backing Cogden beach (both five minutes), or go fossil-hunting in West Bay (10 minutes). If your kids (and indeed you) enjoyed making friends with the livestock at Flowerdew Farm, they’d probably also love to say ‘hi’ to the donkeys, reindeers and emus at Vurlands Animal Farm (five minutes). To watch turtles, sharks and rays flit around aquariums instead, head for Sea Life Centre Weymouth (half an hour). For town time, Weymouth (25 minutes) is a pretty Georgian-era seaside town packed with historic pubs and with a yachting harbour to stroll around; lively Bridport (10 minutes) is known for its seafood dining scene and antiques quarter, and Dorchester (20 minutes) is Dorset’s capital of culture, with lots of sights associated with the famed local-born author Thomas Hardy.
