  • Exclusive-use bell tent in woodland 25 minutes’ drive from Dorchester
  • The Jurassic Coast and the Cerne Giant are both 20 minutes’ drive
  • Off-grid pitch with an outdoor kitchen; pubs 15 minutes’ drive
A stay at Colesmoor Farm, 25 minutes’ drive from Dorchester in Dorset, means you really can get away from it all. If you’re also looking for a countryside sojourn in a pre-erected tent, then you’ve definitely found the right spot, for accommodation is in a solitary bell tent – hurray, just arrive and settle in – in a 22-acre woodland on a family farm. The spacious tent contains a double mattress and bottom sheet, so you’ll need to bring pillows and bedding from home. An outdoor picnic bench is situated to soak up any evening sunlight, otherwise you can cosy up around the firepit. One bag of logs is provided, and you can buy more on site to keep you going. And there’s more. A few metres away from the bell tent are private-use facilities, featuring a gas-heated alfresco shower and a spacious outdoor kitchen with a double gas burner and space for prepping simple meals. Soap and washing-up liquid are provided, but not cooking equipment, so remember to pack pots, pans and utensils. If you don’t fancy alfresco cooking, there are a number of local pubs and restaurants within 15 minutes’ drive – the site owners will be happy to recommend their favourite places. Please note: this site is off-grid and solar lighting is available for moving around after dark, but otherwise there is no power at the pitch. There is no Wi-Fi but there is a decent mobile signal.

Local attractions

Dorset landmarks are aplenty, so it’s time for some exploring. Perhaps start with spectacular Jurassic Coast (20 minutes’ drive) landmarks like crescent-shaped Lulworth Cove (50 minutes) and the dramatic Durdle Door (both 50 minutes) sea arch. For sandy beaches, head for West Bay (20 minutes), while Chesil Beach (half an hour) is the spot for long bracing walks on shingle. Walkers can potter alongside streams in Kingcombe Meadows Nature Reserve, or look out for woodpeckers, rare butterflies and wild ponies at Powerstock Common Nature Reserve (both five minutes), where the path follows a former railway line through woodland and heath. For strolls with an historic theme, make for Iron Age Eggardon Hill Fort (45 minutes’ walk) straight from your tent – and don’t miss the sea views from the top – or hike up to the grass-covered circular ramparts of Maiden Castle (half an hour’s drive). You can follow a gravel trail to the stubby hillocks of Winterbourne Poor Lot Barrows (15 minutes), and meander uphill to the National Trust’s mysterious Cerne Giant (20 minutes), carved from the chalk hillside at a date yet unknown.
