General

  • Peaceful and quiet campsite in a walking paradise
  • Set in a farm in rural Dorset
  • Plenty of activities and attractions available nearby

Family-run Brewery Farm in rural Dorset welcomes you to enjoy an area filled with history, attractions and outdoor activities, whether you're looking for a relaxing break or a quiet romantic getaway.

Ramble up to the Dorset Gap, hike along the nearby Jurassic Coast, or enjoy an afternoon stroll around the well-maintained footpaths in the village.

On site is a well-stocked farm shop, a very short walk from the pitches, selling locally produced meat and vegetables, plants, fine foods and more. There's also an excellent pub and restaurant immediately opposite - Sunday carvery is a must.

A new shower and toilet block was added in August 2017: pitch prices now include all facilities, hardstanding, electric and wifi.

Fantastic facilities on-site! The amenities block looked brand new, which incorporated 3 wet-rooms & a trough sink for washing-up. Very impressive!
Also had the village shop/Post Office on site, which was a plesent surprise as we'd forgotten the washing-up liquid.
We loved the positioning; rural but with a pub over the road ,beautiful views, footpaths through grass fields.

    Disliked:

Nothing really! Just had a slight impression of the lay-out being unfinished. Also 3 loos/wet rooms great while there were only 3 units on site, but would struggle at full capacity.

We have been camping in tents for many years but this is our first season in a caravan. Had I been in my tent at this site it would have been an even less favourable review.

First, the good bits. This is a quiet location surrounded by farmland and in easy reach of some excellent days out. Far reaching views with good sunrise and sunset views. I suspect whoever took the pictures for the website has experience as an estate agent photographer when it comes to finding flattering angles.

    Disliked:

    Then the less good bits.
I very much doubt if the site owners have ever actually been camping.

Many reviews talk about the excellent new shower block. And yes, it does look amazing. It is however entirely unsuitable as a campsite facility.

3 toilets and 3 showers is cutting it a bit fine for 15 or so pitches. However when in fact you have 3 wet rooms each with a shower and a toilet it means that as soon as someone uses the shower, it ties up that toilet for the duration of the shower too. Not to mention everything being damp or having to shower in a room recent vacated by someone doing their morning poo. Luckily we were in a caravan with our own toilet but it was usual to have people waiting 10-20 minutes just to have a wee.

The showers themselves are the over-head rain type. Again, look fantastic but impractical. Want to wash mud off your legs, want to have a shower without getting your hair wet? No chance.

The wetroom drains do not work as well as the wetroom showers and so you end up in a little pond which you then have to mop away. You can’t adjust the temperature of the shower, one of the hot taps did not work at all and the door closers were so slow and stiff you wasted even more time just waiting for the door to close which ended up with people forcing them closed and so people near the shower block are treated to slamming doors every couple of minutes.

    No wipe-down cloths provided either.

Outside the showers is the washing up area. Again looks amazing. Slim dark worktops and a long thin communal sink. However when you come to use it you realise that it is too narrow to get a washing up bowl into, the two middle positions have no access to anywhere to put things and even the two on the end have no actual draining area.

This is a real shame. Clearly the owners have spent a lot of money on a fantastic looking shower block but it just does not work. They need some more toilets and to re-think the washing up area.

Unfortunately the rest of the site also needs to be thought through by an actual camper. You have to walk across people’s pitches to fill up with water.

There is no drainage under the taps so it will get boggy.

There is no greywater disposal. You have to use the chemical toilet disposal point which is basically a raised man-hole with a grating over it. Bad enough to empty your toilet into but to then have to lift a full grey water container up onto a grid covered in toilet roll is not ideal.

Our pitch was next to the shower block. It somehow managed to tilt in every direction as well as not being square so parking and levelling was a bit of a chore.

Back legs fully extended and on a big pile of blocks, one front leg about half way down and the other pretty much fully retracted. The grass then sloped away from it so the awning was at a jaunty angle. Clearly the pitches are still being established but investing in a straight edge would be a sound idea.

There is no information provided such as local maps, walks leaflets etc.

And finally, the campsite is hidden from the road. The arrival instructions are not clear and the roadside signage only refers to the pub, the farmshop and farm itself. If coming from the Bridport direction you stand a very good chance of driving straight past it which is not ideal when you then have to try to turn around a car and caravan in the narrow lanes.

If coming from the other direction, there is a camping and caravan site sign but there is a rather lovely bush right in front of it.

I tried to give feedback about the wetrooms to the site owner but she was not having any of it.

We would certainly not consider going there again and if you are not able to plan a 20 minute wait into your bathroom visits I’d suggest you take a bucket with you.

This could be a fantastic campsite given the location and surroundings but it really needs to have some input from people who actually camp.

A small, quiet, friendly campsite with well marked pitches. The campsite owner was
friendly, welcoming and helpful. The toilet/washing up block was very clean-showers were part of a wet room which meant lots of space to move around! The campsite had beautiful views and there were lots of local footpaths and country lanes to explore on foot or by bike. An excellent pub and farm shop on the doorstep meant we didn't have to drive far.

    Disliked:

Although the campsite wasn't full to capacity, there was quite a lot of queuing for the wet rooms-maybe a few separate toilets would help?
A more communal water tap might also be good-it felt as though we had to walk across other people's pitches to get water.

From the manager...

Thank you for your helpful suggestions.,

One of our best camping experiences! We were three families with young children and dogs and can not recommend the Brewery Farm enough. The location is remote, scenic and peaceful to escape the city but close enough to the coast and other places of interest for day trips out.
The owners and staff was friendly and helpful, always having us as their priority. Facilities were clean and tidy. Definitely looking forward to our next stay at Brewery Farm.

Beautiful location in rural setting. Pub right opposite, so for rainy days (and there was a lot of rain!), it was perfect. Good selection of family board games to entertain the kids!

Carol, the owner, was really helpful and friendly. Farm shop on site, was sadly lacking freshly baked bread that is detailed on the website, but you could get the essentials.

The Owner kindly contacted us in advance to say that she might not be there to greet us when we arrived and left a message advising us where to park in the site to avoid the damper lower lying pitches.Shortly after our arrival she came to see us. She was friendly and helpful and gave us some useful local information.
The water, electric power and wifi facilities on the hard standing pitch were good.
The new shower block is very smart and warm.
The pub immediately next to the site was friendly and served good food.

    Disliked:

Neither we nor the other couple on the site could get the showers warm. This seemed odd because there was plenty of hot water for washing dishes (for which there were good facilities) and in the toilet sinks.

I'm not sure how frequently the toilet/wet rooms are cleaned but they didn't appear to have been cleaned thus morning so mud from campsite was still in the shower/toilets and one of the toilets had run out of paper towels.

It may simply be that this was very much the low season for the site ( it was below zero on the two nights that we stayed). Clearly a lot of money has been spent on making it a smart modern facility for campers and we would gladly stay again in future.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review and we are pleased that you like the site. Really sorry to hear that the water was not hot in the showers though and we will obviously get hold of the plumber to rectify this. Also just to reassure you that the shower block is cleaned and serviced daily when we have guests staying. Hope to see you again soon.
