  • Woodland campsite on Dorset's Isle of Purbeck peninsula
  • Between Corfe Castle and Studland (both 10 minutes' drive)
  • Dogs on leads welcome; firepits allowed and available for hire
Surrounded by woodland and set deep in the Dorset countryside, Burnbake Campsite Corfe Castle is set up for quiet outdoor retreats in the rural South West of England. The pitches here are in two fields, one of which is spacious and open while the other, smaller area is surrounded by trees, allowing you to pitch up in a more secluded area (the latter is also nearer the main facilities block). With lots of wildlife and a brook running through it, the site is also home to good facilities, including well-maintained toilets, showers and laundry machines. Well-behaved dogs are welcome at no extra cost (but keep them on leads, please), and you can light fires in firepits or other containers off the ground as long as the weather conditions make it safe to do so (a limited number of firepits are also available to hire). If you find yourself arriving late and miss the site team, simply head to reception (where a site map on the door will show you where to pitch up) and then return to check in the next morning. Burnbake Campsite Corfe Castle is within a 10-minute drive of both Corfe Castle and Studland – handy if you want to visit a pub, tea room or food shop.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch (woodland)

Liked: A well equipped shop and beautiful surroundings made this a very pleasant stay. Facilities were clean and never got overly busy. Ability to hire a fire pit is always a plus, and the campsite was a nice hike away from Corfe Castle. Site is also an absolute wildlife haven, we saw an owl in the wild for the first time ever, right above our tent! It also has beautiful dark skies so definitely bring a telescope!

Disliked: Timer buttons on showers and taps were way too short, we had to pretty much hold the buttons down to keep the water running. Firepit hire was a little more expensive than other sites, as they charge per-night rather than a flat fee for the stay (not too bad though!) We had absolutely no signal, no fault of the campsite but something to be aware of!

From the manager: What a great review, and it's so lovely to read that you saw an owl up close. We hear the every night, but spotting one is very lucky. Thank you for the feedback on the showers, this is something we are looking in to.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch (woodland)

Liked: Lovely quiet site, clean well maintained shower toilet block, useful small shop on site.

Disliked: The dogs on leads at ALL times policy was not enforced properly. Dogs running around and approaching other people's tents or camper Van's, sometimes barking and threatening other people and dogs. Also there was no sign outside the shower toilet block saying "NO DOGS" so people were taking them in with them. In one case two large labradors at the same time.

From the manager: Thanks for leaving us a review and I'm pleased to hear you enjoyed our site. It's disappointing when people don't respect the dogs on lead rule. This is something that our wardens do their best to patrol and is something that most of our guests respect.

Liked: The shop was well stocked and staff were polite and helpful. The woodland walks were nice.

Disliked: We camped in the Open Field for 1 night. The portaloos around this area of the campsite were disgusting and overflowing, so we walked to the main toilets and shower blocked to use the facilities there. The ladies toilets were ok, but the men's toilet block were filthy. We are seasoned campers and have seen better cared for facilities in much more basic sites. Also, dogs were roaming around the site off their leads, which is simply not acceptable and the site seemed far to big to be appropriately supervised. We also saw people lighting fires on the grass. We would try camping here again but not in the Open Field and not during school holidays.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review, and I'm pleased to hear you'll give us another try. We have the portaloos emptied and cleaned everyday in the summer holidays. We also have a strict, no ground fire rule which is policed by our wardens who patrol the site. If you do ever see a ground fire, then please report it as we take this extremely seriously. Hopefully we'll see you back here again, perhaps in our quieter season. Burnbake Team.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch (large)

Liked: A large site with the freedom of choosing where you pitch. Good facilities including grey water drop , a rare find in UK ! Little shop on site and a snack shack serving pizzas and burgers .

Disliked: Disappointed they would not allow me to re charge my electric bike battery even though I was happy to pay for the electricity . Remarkably they’re not insured for such things.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for such a great review. If you do visit us again, then we are looking into getting some electric bike chargers outside our reception, so hopefully that will solve that problem. Thanks

Local attractions

This site is in a truly cracking location – being on Dorset's Isle of Purbeck peninsula means there are top beaches in several directions, including Studland Beach (10 minutes' drive) with its fine sand and great views, Swanage beach (15 minutes) backed by a classic British seafront and Kimmeridge Bay (20 minutes), an attractive shingle beach surrounded by farmers' fields. Family-friendly days out are easy to arrange, as there are top Dorset attractions like Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre (20 minutes) and The Tank Museum (20 minutes) just to the north of Purbeck. Staying on the peninsula itself, you can ride on the Swanage steam railway (stations from 10 minutes' drive), explore the ramparts and ruins of Corfe Castle (10 minutes) or check out the inflatable assault course at Dorset Adventure Park (five minutes). The local area is a fantastic destination for walkers too, who have one of the easternmost (and, many say, most scenic) parts of the South West Coast Path just a few miles away. Top local rambles include the abandoned village of Tyneham (20 minutes) as well as the hilly but rewarding hike between Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door (25 minutes to the car park).
