The site is on a pick-your-own farm
Seasonal produce at the farm shop

  • Simple site 10 minutes’ drive from the New Forest National Park
  • Highcliffe Castle 10 minutes’ drive and Lymington 20 minutes
  • PYO farm with a shop and community café; pubs five minutes’ drive
More woodland adventure than a site with a long list of facilities, Cat and Fiddle Campsite is set in a tree-sheltered field on a pick-your-own fruit, vegetable and flower farm with a shop and welcoming café. Just five minutes’ drive from Christchurch, it’s a back-to-basics spot around which you can discover all that is special about this leafy corner of Hampshire. Cat and Fiddle is not for you if you’re after late night and lots of organised activities. What you can expect is as follows: waking up to birdsong, local food and community events in the café and woodland walks directly from the pitches. You also have the chance to rustle up feasts on your barbecue – you can pick up goodies from the farm shop without having to leave the site. If you’re just not that into alfresco cooking, it’s handy that the on-site café is open for meals in the evening. Thirsty for a pint? Head for the clutch of pubs in the nearby village of Burton (five minutes). In addition, hiking and cycling routes lace the New Forest National Park (10 minutes’ drive, keep an eye open for deer and wild ponies grazing freely) and lack of light pollution means bright nights under the stars when conditions are right.

What customers say

This is a well-regarded campsite with friendly and helpful staff, noted for its peaceful atmosphere and excellent location near amenities, including a pub and farm shop. Reviewers consistently praised the clean and well-maintained toilet and shower facilities. Guests appreciated the spacious pitches, option to camp under trees or by car, and the secure site with evening gate locks. Some noted the grass could be uncomfortable to walk on, possibly due to drought conditions.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked The lady we spoke to initially was very nice. The field was next to a woodland.

Disliked The site is very close to an A road, which is busy all day and night, so neither of us got much sleep, it drowns out the sound of nature so there is not much in the way of peace.
There are no toilet hand washing facilities, you have to use the cold water from the washing up sink. There are two showers, one had just cold water and the other was scalding so you couldn't really get in it, they were both quite dirty. Because of this it wasn’t really suitable for more than one night, I called and text to see if I could get a refund for the next night I had paid for, but no one replied.

The field is also very bumpy and looked quite neglected, we were in a 4x4 and even that was a challenge to drive over.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave your detailed feedback. We’re pleased to hear that you found our initial welcome friendly and enjoyed the woodland setting.

We’re sorry that some aspects of your stay did not meet your expectations. The field had been affected by the recent heatwave, which unfortunately has left it looking particularly dry and tired. It’s been an odd time for the local area with local parts of the forest being on fire as well as a hose pipe ban. However, we would like to reassure guests that the site is regularly maintained and cleaned, and our team takes great pride in keeping the facilities and grounds as clean and well cared for as possible.

We’re also sorry to hear about your experience with the showers. This is the first complaint we have received regarding the shower facilities, so we were unaware there was an issue during your stay. Had we been made aware at the time, we would have been very happy to investigate and address the problem. We will certainly be checking the showers and cleaning arrangements following your comments. Thank you.

We do appreciate that the proximity to the road is something that can affect guests differently, and unfortunately this is not something we can change. We’re sorry that the traffic noise impacted your sleep and enjoyment of the natural surroundings.

Finally, we’re disappointed to hear that you were unable to get a response when you contacted us about your remaining night. We apologise for this, and appreciate how frustrating that must have been.

Thank you again for your feedback. It is always helpful to know where we can improve, and we will take your comments on board.

Would definitely use again

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Cute little farm shop on site serving exceptional tasting coffee and treats, quiet campsite and very close to the pub which was lovely. Staff friendly & helpful :)

Disliked The grass was really uncomfortable to walk on, let alone pitch up on. Spikey, thorny and lumpy - that being said there has been a drought.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Very friendly welcome and setup. Camping under tress or not, with or without car, are great options. Ice cream, iced coffee as well as loads of other options in the shop was handy and tasty. Will return for sure: 10/10.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Lots of positives: close to Hinton Admiral train station, Texaco fuel and shop, and the Cat and Fiddle bar/restaurant. Set a reasonable distance from the main road. Decent layout where there is one long track you can camp off with your car and tent. Friendly staff waiting at the cafe. Good scenery.
