Monkton Wyld Court: Families welcome

General

  • Eco-friendly Dorset site with peaceful valley views
  • A 10-minute drive from Charmouth or Lyme Regis; Abbotsbury 30 minutes
  • Shared kitchen, resident farm animals and woodland walks

Tending to these 12 gorgeous acres of Dorset countryside is a tough job, but someone's got to do it. At Monkton Wyld Court, those someones are a hardworking bunch of community members and volunteers who harvest crops, make bounteous bales of hay and keep the livestock well fed and watered.

Stays at this outdoor education and sustainability hub are a fair bit more laidback while still staying true to the site's off-grid roots. The facilities here include a well-equipped communal kitchen, no-fuss composting toilets, an alfresco pizza oven and a shared firepit. This being a kid-friendly spot, there are also a few rope swings dangling from the trees.

Within an hour's walk (or a 10-minute drive) of the Jurassic Coast, Monkton Wyld Court is in a secluded valley with inviting grounds that include terraced lawns, woodlands, a stream, reedbeds and a Victorian walled garden. The pitches are all flat and even, thanks in part to their past life as a grass tennis court. Barbecues can be set up here, and grub – grilled or otherwise – can be eaten on one of the site’s several handy picnic tables.

Monkton Wyld Court is a 30-minute stroll from a friendly local pub, and Charmouth, where there's a wide sandy beach and plenty of places to stock up on food, is a 10-minute drive away.

Everything about this site, is well thought out, it has a outdoor kitchen for everyone to use, with a fridge, freezer and oven, pizza ovens, fire pits that we all sat around of an evening, made for a really enjoyable atmosphere.
I was a little worried about composting toilet but they are fine.
It has a little bar that opens of an evening and does a nice ale.
Charging sockets available to use in the barn.
We love it so much we extended our stay. Definatly be booking for next

A fantastic little campsite with great facilities. We were staying with two young boys so the rope swing and trikes were very welcome so we could get the tent up. The gas cooker was really good and meant that we didn't need to use our own smaller one. Shower was nice and hot and toilets indoor or compost were good too. It is in a great location close Lyme Regis and other beaches. We would recommend a trip to Pecorama in Beer for young children who like trains. Being a small campsite it was very friendly and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone.

It is a small site and in a beautiful setting. The shared facilities were great and the people were friendly and helpful. Each pitch has its own picnic table and parasol.

    Disliked:

Not keen on compost toilet but that is just a personal preference and there was the alternative of the house toilet. Shower was very very hot!

The setting was lovely, flat pitches, with some tree cover for shade, There was plenty of opportunity for children to explore and play in the nearby wooded areas.

    Disliked:

We were not really briefed on the site , we found the toilets but not the shower until the next day ( and there was no one about to ask). It was in a secluded outdoor spot which was great but we could have done with one the first night .

We had a great time at Monkton Wyld. Perfect set up for a long weekend away, close to Lyme Regis and the Jurassic Coast with plenty of beeches and scenery to visit. Camping couldn't be easier with the kitchen equipped with fridge/freezer range hob and sink all set up close by. Remember to bring your kettle and cooking equipment and of course some matches! We put the BBQ to good use and had a camp fire one evening too, we made a donation for the wood we used. The out door solar shower was brilliant and hot every time. The compost loo is a short walk into the woodland but if this isn't your thing then you are able to use the indoor toilet and sink in the hallway of the house which is close by too.

Local attractions

Make sure to spend plenty of time in Lyme Regis (10 minutes' drive), whether that involves watching gulls cadging chips on the Cobb (the town's far-famed sea wall), exploring fossils on the beach and in the town's two archaeological museums or admiring fish as they glide past at the aquarium. Grownup guests might also appreciate a locally-brewed tipple at Lyme Regis Brewery.

Equally close by is Charmouth (10 minutes), home to the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre (a great place to get your bearings), a target sports centre where hot shots can practise their skills and a treetop high ropes course.

Those in your entourage keen on examining birds and beasts have several options hereabouts. Closest to base is Axe Valley Wildlife Park (10 minutes), a favourite with families where the kids can make friends with meerkats and chat with the chipmunks. Abbotsbury Swannery (30 minutes), meanwhile, is where to head to see masses of mute swans, which have been reared on this site since medieval times. Finally, drive out to Wildwood Escot (30 minutes) if you're on the hunt for a zoo with a few extras attached (including zipwires, trampolines, mazes and more).

Must see

  • Mapperton House & Gardens (10.4 miles)
  • Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site (14.4 miles)
  • Montacute House (16.4 miles)
