Widecombe Valley - Dartmoor Camping: Individual camping pitches

General

  • Quiet wild campsite in the village of Widecombe in the Moor
  • Five minutes' drive to Haytor Rocks; 15 minutes to Bovey Tracey
  • Central Dartmoor location on the banks of the river Webburn

There are heaps of great walks and other outdoor activities around Dartmoor National Park, and setting up camp at a central spot like Widecombe Valley – Dartmoor Camping means it should be nice and easy to get out to as many of them as you like…

This is a very quiet little wild campsite tucked away just on the edge of the village of Widecombe in the Moor, about 25 minutes’ drive from Newton Abbot. There are lots of great footpaths to explore nearby, and it makes a handy stopover for folk backpacking or walking their way across the national park.

It’s a simple and laidback setup here, with composting toilets provided, dogs welcome and barbecues and campfires both permitted. There are no showers on site, but there’s something even better: at the end of a long day of walking, you can instead take a refreshing dip in the fresh water of the river Webburn, which flows past the site.

Look out from this Devon site and you’ll mainly see farmland and Dartmoor’s tors (which you’ll have easy access to from here), but it’s not entirely rural: you can walk to the village in about five minutes for a café, shop and pub.

Please note

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Our second time here, A wonderful site set in the heart of Dartmoor, pleasant stay, convenient location. Staff very helpful. Pub just down the road and amazing walks on the doorstep! Just fantastic. Facilities are very basic, but that didn't bother us.

Had a great stay here. The location is brilliant for exploring Dartmoor and the village was a short stroll away with a great cafe and village shop.
We camped right by the stream. If you want to have a fire, you need to bring your own fire pit, as you can't have a fire next to you pitch on the grass. There is a communal fire pit area up one end of the site.
A sleepy beautiful little campsite with basic facilities, perfect for a short stay.

Was perfect for our 3 young children and dog, they all loved playing in the stream, collecting water for cooking etc from the water tap and just running around playing. They also enjoyed a fire at night to today marshmallows on and star gazing.
It's all totally enclosed so was safe for everyone and as it was pretty quiet the other campers were happy for our little dog to be off the lead so she also had a great time.
    Compost toilets were kept clean.

    Everything! ………
This is a back to basics, simple, no nonsense campsite. Park your car find a pitch and enjoy! Trolley provided to carry your kit to your pitch. Toilets, sink for washing dishes(not drinking water) stand alone tap for drinking next to the toilets. Small brook runs through the site which is excellent for cooling off the feet following a hike over the moors or cooling your beers😉 no phone signal which was just what we needed as it stopped the kids nagging us back home. 5 mins walk to the Rugglestone Inn for great food and beer and there’s a few shops in Widecombe to buy amenities. This is the moors so expect sheep to bleat through the night, foxes to yelp, the odd dog to bark when they hear a fox. If you want to recharge the body batteries then head for this site Dan was great with comms but remember once in the village there’s no signal so text him at the top of the hill! What’s not to enjoy?
