General
- Scenic dog-friendly wild camping site in Dartmoor National Park
- A five-minute drive from Bellever Forest; 25 minutes from Becky Falls
- Spacious pitches with room for car parking; barbecues permitted
From ticking off Dartmoor’s tors to waterfall walks, outdoor activities are very much the order of the day in Dartmoor National Park. If that sounds like your kind of thing, grab your gear and fix your base at Cator Hill View, a dog-friendly scenic wild camping site surrounded by the national park.
High up with rather splendid vistas over the moors and the surrounding tors, you’ll already have one view under your belt and plenty more natural sights to explore in the surrounding beauty spots, including Bellever Forest, five minutes’ drive away from the site for a bridleway walk or riverside amble.
With a slightly rugged feel, the facilities around this site are straightforward and include composting loos. There’s plenty of space around, so you can park your car on the pitch ready for an easy getaway too.
Although you’re in a peaceful position on the site, it’s a 10-minute drive into the historic village of Widecombe where there’s a little more human life around the craft and village markets. As for supermarket shopping, it’s best to gather goods for your break on your way in, from one of several food shops within 20 minutes’ drive of the site.
Perhaps rustle up a barbecue on site or unwind with a campfire, as both are permitted on site. And when you’re looking for a tasty place to eat out, there are a couple within 10 minutes’ drive of the site, including a pub and a café.

Thank you Tim for your positive review... much appreciated. The nearest water supply to the Cator Site is a long way away so unfortunately we will have to be a water free site for while longer yet! Wild Camping as it should be! |

Quite and lots of space, you are basically wild camping …

Thank you Allan for your review. Much appreciated. We are doing our bit to keep Dartmoor a wild place to visit and a field in the middle of nowhere helps with minimising erosion and disturbance to the wildlife. Regards, Dan |

Interesting review Nicola... not really that helpful for people thinking about booking. Phone signal... not a priority for us... if it is for you then I suggest booking elsewhere. Thanks |

Local attractions
There's more than just waterfalls at Becky Falls (25 minutes’ drive)… with woodland walks, animal shows in the small zoo and kids' challenges along the trails, there are lots of things to do for the whole family. The same can be said for Canonteign Falls (40 minutes), where there are Victorian fern gardens, lakes and ship-shaped adventure playgrounds.
If you’re after more family-friendly days out, Pennywell Farm (half an hour) will surely make it onto the list. A farm with interactive animal feeding, tractor rides and other activities on the bill, there’s much to muck into here.
Looking for more feelgood places but inside Dartmoor National Park? Grimspound (15 minutes) is a heritage site that's home to ancient ruins of a prehistoric settlement. Admire the scenery from Hookney Tor and pack a picnic for the views. Other places you may want to visit include the spidery boughs over at Wistman’s Wood (20 minutes) and the gentle river water at Spitchwick Common (10 minutes), a popular spot to indulge in some wild swimming.

Hi, I'm sorry to read your review.
I would point out however that the light in toilet has been working since your stay as I have angled it back up so it comes on when it senses motion in the tent. Someone had obviously fiddled with the light when using the toilet tent and unfortunately it then did not come on for your children!
Both out sites are wild camping sites which means there is often not a person to check you in. It is really not necessary to have someone checking people in on a site this size and remote. Maybe next year book in with a bigger more commercial site that has that facility.
