Mattiscombe Farm Camping: Cows grazing turnips in winter

General

  • Spacious, back-to-basics South Devon farm site with views of Start Bay
  • A 20-minute drive (via ferry) to Salcombe and 25 minutes to Dartmouth
  • South West Coast Path and National Cycle Route 28 access from site

If you’re looking for a peaceful retreat in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Mattiscombe Farm Camping hits the spot. Sitting in hilltop fields and with spectacular views over Start Bay, this three-acre site is on a working family farm, with masses of space for kids to run around safely.

Dogs are also welcome to come and join your camping adventure, but as there’s livestock in neighbouring fields, please keep them on a lead at all times.

Amenities on site include composting toilets, hot showers, a washing-up station, a cold water tap and chemical waste point. There’s always someone around on the farm in case of emergencies (a mobile phone number is given out on arrival), and if you want suggestions for days out, you can catch the owners around and about daily.

Once you’re all settled in, you can pretty much forget about the car. Several country walks start from the farm, and pitches are an easy one-mile walk from Torcross beach, where there’s direct access to the South West Coast Path.

Cyclists can join National Cycle Network Route 28 straight from the site too – hire electric bikes in Kingsbridge (20 minutes’ drive) if you want to take the strain out of pedalling.

Traditional Devon pubs are found in the nearest villages of Stokenham and Torcross (both 20 minutes’ walk), and you can source supplies from local farm shops if you fancy a barbecue back at the site.

Please note

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

There is no reception on-site: on arrival please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Beautiful views, friendliness of owner, clean & warm showers and toilets. The walks from the site to the village and to Torcross and over to Beesands. Definitely recommend this site and will visit again.

    Disliked:

Not a dislike just an observation. It would be nice to have a separate sink to brush teeth/wash hands in. There was a washing up sink but it felt wrong to use this for hand/teeth brushing

just stayed 5 days in our campervan at Mattiscombe the site is clean and peaceful with great views over Start Bay, we didn't meet the owner he was busy on the farm, but everything was straight forward and well laid out with plenty of explanatory notices, the compost toilets and the showers clean and spacious; there is a good phone signal. We will be back.

Plenty on space and not very busy. Lovely sea view and a very good value for money. Short drive for coastal walks and black pool sands.

    Disliked:

You could smell the compostable toilets and the caws poo from the next field all around the campsite but this means being at a farm campsite so I don't complain.

Easy to check in via text, great scenery. Access to two footpaths relatively easy (one requires a short road walk). Campsite not too busy.
Compostable loos were interesting, but surprisingly didn’t smell too awful! Access to the site was good. Beautiful part of the country

    Disliked:

Choosing a pitch number could be easier/clearer - I wasn't sure which pitch number I had chosen and if i was to park facing the number or in the space to the side of it!
The latch on one of the loos was temperamental and couldn’t get in open sometimes from outside

From the manager...

Thanks for your review, we're glad you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you again.
We are always on the end of the phone if there are any issues or questions as stated in our reply to your check in text. We could have cleared up easily that pitches are on the markers and unless informed about maintenance needs, these are not always easy to spot on regular inspections of the site.

Local attractions

Totnes (35 minutes' drive) has lots of cute indie shops, and if you’d like to explore other Devon towns, drive to East Portlemouth (15 minutes) and hop on the ferry to Salcombe (20 minutes) for dinghy hire, spas and a gin distillery, or head off to Dartmouth (35 minutes) and have a poke around the town’s namesake castle and a leisurely lunch in waterfront restaurants overlooking the Dart river.

If you’re holidaying with the family, park down by the lake at Slapton Ley (five minutes’ drive) and let your kids and dogs have a run around along Slapton Sands spit (10 minutes). There are thrill rides at Woodlands Family Theme Park (20 minutes), and you can keep the kids entertained with keeper talks and big cats at Paignton Zoo Environmental Park (50 minutes).

For a quiet family day on the lovely beaches of South Devon, try secluded Mattiscombe Sands for rockpooling and paddling, or head to Lannacombe beach (both 15 minutes) for safe swimming – the latter is also dog friendly all year around.
