  • A 25-minute drive to Bude and 40 minutes to Tintagel Castle
  • On-site clubhouse with restaurant, bar, games and entertainment
Devon or Cornwall? Cornwall or Devon? It is, of course, one of life’s dilemmas… but thankfully one that’s easily sorted with a stay at Chapmanswell Caravan Park, a Devon holiday park that’s close to the border with Cornwall and in a most handy spot for getting out to enjoy the spoils of both counties. This park five minutes drive from the village of St Giles on the Heath ticks all sorts of boxes for all sorts of holidays: it’s a family-friendly and dog-friendly place, handily close to the A30 (five miles away) for travels and days out, and with some splendid views over the Tamar Valley and Dartmoor. Even with all that on offer, there’s a highlight still to come – and that’s the site’s own clubhouse, The Anglers Rest, with a bar and grill that’s open all week, hosting live entertainment weekly in high season and fortnightly in the low season. The restaurant serves up reasonably priced food, including homemade fries and pies (opening times vary in and out of high season, with music continuing until 11pm in the summer). There’s also a pool table, dartboard, fruit machines and a dance floor to keep the good times rolling. Ice creams, sweets, alcohol and assorted essentials can be picked up at the site shop (they’ve even got doggy ice cream to get four-legged family members in on the holiday vibes…) Other facilities on site include a covered play area and a dog exercise area, along with a coin-operated launderette, a washing-up area and chemical disposal point. The bathroom facilities have baby changing facilities and central heating plus separate male, female and disabled shower areas. Reception is open seven days a week, and the owners live on site so you can always get hold of someone if you need anything.

What customers say

This is a friendly, family-run campsite with highly praised staff and a welcoming atmosphere. Visitors enjoyed the clean facilities, good food in the clubhouse, and entertainment. The children's covered play area was a particular hit. Some guests noted the facilities could benefit from modernising and that pitches were sometimes close to the noisy clubhouse. The site is well-located for exploring the surrounding area.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked Loved it, definitely will be back again, the location is perfect you are between 30 minutes to an hour if everything , amazing beaches dog friendly as well, clean tidy campsite, the staff are amazing they will do anything to help you all you got to do is ask, they are amazing people highly recommend going there. They understand what it’s like having children and having big family and just how hard it can be but they helped us out a lot when we needed it. Honest amazing people. If your wanting to go away to somewhere you won’t have young children running around being loud or late at night when kids are doing last minute toilet run before bed a bit of dirt on the floor then this most definitely is not a site for you. The toilet/shower rooms was cleaned three times a day I had seen this myself. Honestly give this site 10/10. Beautiful people.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked I booked this site as I wanted my children to experience a different holiday than the usual arcades, swimming pool etc. I originally booked an electric grass tent pitch but bought a motorhome, and swapped to an electric hardstanding pitch.
I can honestly say there is not a bad thing I can say about this site. It's in the perfect location for exploring both Devon and Cornwall, with Bude sea pool less than 30 mins away.
The pub onsite serves delicious home cooked food, and the drinks are reasonably priced. It also has entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights, which I enjoyed singing and dancing to. The toilets were spotless and the showers were spacious, without a push button in sight.
There is a sheltered park for the kids, as well as games and even dressing up. I felt safe letting my children play onsite without having to worry about where they were.
From the minute I arrived onsite Paula and Marc were the perfect hosts and all the staff were really friendly, I was made to feel like part of the family and nothing was any trouble. We can't wait to come back

From the manager: We’re really sorry to hear that you didn’t enjoy your stay with us.

When guests arrive, we provide a welcome letter with a map to their pitch, site rules, and a 24-hour phone number so we can be contacted at any time if there are any problems. We always do our best to help — for example, another couple in a tourer asked to be moved away from the tents for a quieter spot, and we were happy to accommodate them.

As a family-run park, we do get very busy in the summer with families and children, and we also advertise weekend entertainment which many guests enjoy. We appreciate this may not be for everyone, and we’re always grateful when guests give us the chance to resolve concerns during their stay.

We take all feedback seriously, even when it’s difficult to understand what went wrong. While many visitors leave us glowing reviews, we’ll reflect on your comments as we continue working hard to provide the best experience we can.
Sincerely Chapmanswell Team.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked good size of pitch
good prices on food and drink in the anglers rest

Disliked showers poor and toilets floors always wet
the discription on pitch up miss leading as the pub down the road has been shut for at least a couple of years. No bus stop

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re sorry to hear you felt the toilets weren’t up to standard during your visit. Our team does maintain them several times a day, but if something ever needs extra attention, we encourage guests to let our bar staff know straight away so we can put it right.

In terms of transport, there are bus stops nearby (one by our back field and another by the old closed pub). There is a service 4 times a day to and from neighbouring towns.
Though we don’t personally promote them, Guests will also find welcoming pubs nearby in both neighbouring villages if they fancy exploring.

We’re really pleased you enjoyed the spacious pitches, our freshly cooked food, and the great value on our drinks — it means a lot to hear that. We’ll keep working hard to make every part of your visit as enjoyable as possible.

Regards, The Chapmanswell Team

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked The owner was very helpful.

Disliked The noise from the bar, going on so late at night. People screaming and arguing after midnight. If you want to party its the place to go. If you want quite would not recommend.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Sorry to hear you had trouble with a neighbour in a tent. We did speak with them the next day, and he apologised — he’d travelled long hours in heavy holiday traffic and was trying to put his tent up in the dark. We did explain, however, that it isn’t acceptable to be arguing that late at night and disturbing other guests.

We do advertise our summer entertainment in advance — with music on Fridays and Saturdays, plus karaoke nights. As a family site, we are naturally very busy during the school holidays, so it isn’t always the quietest time of year. That said, outside of peak season the park is peaceful and relaxing, and many guests choose to return in September once the children are back at school.
Sincerely Chapmanswell Team.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked Spacious pitch as some were occupied by tents 3 times the size of ours plus windbreaker fencing forming private areas.

Disliked No surprise to anyone, the showers & toilets were / are insufficient, in number, in poor condition and quite frankly grubby not fit for purpose.
The club doubles as the area pub and was mostly frequented by locals.
Loud and lively..
The drive to anything was a bit tedious therefore not really convenient for us.
Shared electricity off spur extensions is not ideal.

Local attractions

The only issue with staying close to the Devon/Cornwall border is the possibility of being overwhelmed by options for days out… so perhaps it’s sensible to start somewhat local with a visit to Launceston Castle (10 minutes’ drive) or a day of meeting cute creatures at the Tamar Otter & Wildlife Centre (15 minutes)? Alternatively, of course, you could set forth straight away for the seaside – there’s so much fab coastline around here but you’ll likely find some of the highlights to be the beaches and surf schools of Bude (25 minutes) and Widemouth Bay (half an hour). If you’re more into strolling along cobbled lanes, the fishing villages of Boscastle (the one with the witches museum) and Port Isaac (the one where they filmed Doc Martin) are both within a 45-minute drive. Other coastal spots to check out include Tintagel Castle (40 minutes), a place of much Arthurian legend, and the maritime city of Plymouth (55 minutes), home to the UK’s largest aquarium and a stonking gin distillery.
