  • Peaceful pitches on a Devon farm, 20 minutes' drive from Dartmouth
  • Half an hour's walk from Slapton village, beach and nature reserve
  • Dogs welcome: walks nearby and a grooming salon on site
Coastal strolls, countryside strolls, pub strolls… Pittaford Farm Holidays is in a prime position for folk who’d like to get out and about on foot on their Devon holiday. Stride straight out onto footpaths and bridleways from this peaceful farm site, getting you out to the village of Slapton (and its pair of pubs), Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve and Slapton Sands in half an hour or so. Naturally, this is all pretty heavenly for dogs as well, so feel free to bring four-legged family members along for the ride to snuffle along the local paths. If they’re looking a little shaggy around the edges, hand them over to the expert dog groomers on site, who’ll relieve them of any errant twigs and tangles and restore them to their smartest selves. The vibe at this site is a proper countryside one – the closest neighbours are the horses next door, and there are splendid views both by day (over the fields and hills) and by night (up into the starry skies). A level grass play area has plenty of space for knocking a ball about, with football goals for those who’d like to spend some time honing their striking skills, and pitches are big enough for evenings spent barbecuing or cuddling up around small campfires. All the basics are in place close to the pitches – guests have access to a toilet, hot shower, water supply and a washing-up area, along with a freezer to keep ice packs sorted.

Bell tent (five person)

Liked: Amazing countryside views, good facilities (fridges, electric plugs, excellent showers). Stayed at the bell tent and it was very comfortable: kitchen space with gas stove and portable big fridge. Football space for kids.

Disliked: I wished the toilets were more and more private, just 3 in total, wall doesn’t touch the floor so you can hear everything happening in the three toilets. Bear in mind NO music at all at all times which felt like a downer when we wanted low music. Driving in the small lanes felt unsafe at points.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We had a wonderful week stay, we were nervous about the non electric pitch but the facilities made up for the lack of it. Fridges and freezer to store food, charger points for phones etc. Nice to be able to have a fire at the pitch. I was worried about the lack of things for my seven year old to do but there were plenty of children playing at the football net together. It was nice to see children playing instead of on their devices! If you want to disconnect from tech and get back to nature this is the place to be, so peaceful and quiet. Paul was very accommodating when we asked for help, nice chap. If you want a sheltered pitch try and go for the first two after the facilities but be aware if you are a light sleeper people going to the toilet in the night will wake you up walking to and from as the pitches are very near to the path. I would be aware that the lanes to pittaford are single track and can be a bit daunting at first but once you have done them a few times they are really not that bad.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Generous pitch sizes and not too many pitches on the site. set quiet times so you’re not disturbed by other campers into the early hours. Nearby to lovely local beaches and other pretty towns/villages. We would definitely go back. Very typical for the area, but very narrow and glorious country lanes (single track mostly, with plenty of passing places). We loved it, but definitely not for everybody or those who are less confident on these types of roads.

Disliked: Very minor. As there is an understandable ‘no cars at pitches’ policy to allow children to play freely around the site, it did mean that we were a little too far away to use the car as overspill storage, so the tent did become quite crowded with all of our stuff which we wouldn’t ordinarily keep in the tent if the vehicle was parked next to us.

Non-electric grass and gravel campervan pitch

Liked: We loved Pittaford farm campsite, once we had made it through the lanes, it was an oasis of calm. Paul was very welcoming and there was a relaxed atmosphere throughout the site. All the sites are flat with loads of space to spead out. There is very little light pollution so we were able to sit and stargaze. I loved waking to the sound of bird song, sheep and horses. The showers are lovely and hot, very important. Before our break I had a number of queries, Sally replied quickly and was very helpful.

Route directions

If towing a caravan or larger motorhome, you cannot drive through Slapton, and must approach from the inland side. From the A381, turn off at Stanborough Cross (signposted to Slapton), then follow this road straight ahead until you reach Dittiscombe Cross. Turn right, go past Dittiscombe Equestrian Centre and turn left at Alston Cross. The site is halfway down the hill on the right (look out for Scruffy Pups signs).

Local attractions

You’ll want to start by sauntering off to Slapton – the village is packed with pretty houses, and beyond it is a good mile and a half of shingle beach. Pick up the South West Coast Path here for a lengthy amble, or set out for Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve to follow trails around the lake and through the woods and marshes. More beach? That’s easily done – the folk here recommend outings to Blackpool Sands (15 minutes’ drive), Mill Bay (half an hour) and Bigbury (half an hour), among others. Soft sands and all sorts of watersports await in the seaside town of Salcombe, or you could hit Dartmouth (25 minutes) for boat trips and seafood suppers. Take a break from the coastal wanders and head inland for days out meeting meerkats and watching falcons fly at Woodlands Family Theme Park (15 minutes), or eyeing up all the exotic beasts at Paignton Zoo Environmental Park (35 minutes). If you’re not tasked with supervising small family members, perhaps stop in for samples at Sharpham Wine and Cheese or Calancombe Estate Vineyard (both half an hour).
