Allercombe Farm Glamping: View from the top of the site

General

  • Spacious yurts on a family-run farm in the South Hams
  • A 15-minute drive from Totnes; half an hour from Paignton
  • High-quality meat and firewood sold on site; dogs welcome

For those not yet in the know, the South Hams is a splendid stretch of rural and coastal landscape between Dartmoor, Torbay and the sea. Dawdle a while in this cracking corner of Devon by settling down in one of the yurts at Allercombe Farm Glamping, part of a family-run farm that stretches over 50 green acres.

The accommodation here is rather swish, being fully-furnished and with easy access to the toilets, hot showers and washing-up facilities across the field.

Located midway between Dartmoor and Devon’s super south coast, Allercombe Farm Glamping is on the edge of the village of Rattery, home to a pub that’s been in business since at least the 1400s (there's rumoured to be a tunnel connecting the inn to the church, but the landlords are yet to report any parsons purloining the wares…).

Back on the farm, a posse of pigs, a herd of Dexter cattle and a number of friendly cats also call the place home. There's also bucketloads of wild animal activity around here, with the usual suspects including roe deer and horseshoe bats.

Fresh farm-produced beef, sausages and burgers are sold by the site staff; there are also free-range eggs on hand for breakfasts sunny side up. Self-catering guests can stock up on other bits and pieces in Totnes (15 minutes' drive), where there are several supermarkets and half a dozen delis.

Please note

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

A wonderful place to stay! Fantastic Views, Starry nights, the sounds of nature and the comfortable abode made it such a relaxing break. The toilets and showers were very clean and modern with heating. The kitchen area was small but had everything you needed. We had our own BBQ and had an outside fire. The wood burner in the Yurt was brilliant, it heated the place right up in no time! Bed was comfortable and my son had the pull out couch. We all slept like babies! I loved waking up to the hooting owls one night. Great pub 15 minute walk way, called the Church House Inn. Definitely far better, refined menu than your average pub but worth every penny! The food was fantastic! Deborah and Mark are great hosts and we really enjoyed our stay. Highly recommend this gem of a place.

Lovely peaceful setting with very well equipped facilities. Stayed with friends also travelling with primary aged children. Yurts were clean and very comfortable, plenty of space for a family of 4. Showers and toilets warm and clean. Kitchen well equipped with fridge to store food. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Short walk to local pub where we had an amazing meal. Gas BBQ outside each tent came in handy for other 2 nights. Firepit for the evening and log burner inside the yurts to be able to keep warm. Great location with plenty to do and see locally. No wifi and little phone reception but didn't see that as a disadvantage because enjoyed the peace and quiet. Hosts on hand if needed.

Fantastic spacious, warm and cosy Yurt. Great countryside to sit and relax in. Really effective log burner which all the girls liked as we played card games in the evening. No technology distractions! Perfect. Clean and large showers, well equipped kitchen area if you didn't want to boil the kettle on the gas stove. Gas BBQ there if you need it. Great for star gazing by the camp fire in the evening. Peaceful. Really comfy king size bed and sofa bed for the kids. Central area for a lovely part of the South West. The kids also loved Deborah and Marks farm and got to see the horses, dog, kittens and chicks. Purchased some Dexter beef burgers to take home as the sausages we had when there were gorgeous. The burgers were bloody lovely as well so please buy some! The hosts were really friendly, nice and helpful, a refreshing change!

The BEST glamping site. We had the warmest welcome from Mark & Deb.. nothing was too much trouble and they go out of their way to welcome you. The most cosiest & comfortable yurts and the log burner was lovely in the evening. Very peaceful indeed. The facilities were spotless, amazing toilets and showers and fully equipped kitchen..all in line with covid regulations too which was great. A great base to visit near by towns/ beaches. Really cannot fault anything. We cannot wait to return to this little piece of paradise.

Deborah, Mark & family: they were extremely warm, friendly and welcoming. Excellent hosts who made us feel at ease & at home straight away; as well as being on hand with a friendly smile if we needed anything during our stay.

Accommodation: beautifully decorated yurts with everything we needed to feel cosy and relaxed - lovely & effective log burner; comfortable beds with gorgeous bedding (kept us warm through torrential rain and chilly nights); hot water bottles for each of us & cute fluffy blankets for the kids but we didn’t need to use these because the duvet & log burner kept us so warm & cosy; fresh, fluffy clean towels (effectively 1 each = 2 large & 2 small provided); tea tray, mugs, kettle & portable stove so we could brew up in the tent (we brought a 5l water bottle with us which saved going to the kitchen for water every time we wanted a brew); plenty of storage space for clothes & belongings to keep the yurt tidy; dresser with mirror (came in extremely useful when doing my makeup for a wedding we attended); sofa bed and beanbag for an alternative place to lounge (so comfortable that our son fell asleep on the beanbag and stayed there for most of one evening); bedside lanterns inside the yurt & solar powered fairylights around the balcony to provide a lovely cosy atmosphere in the evenings; digital alarm clock to see how late we were staying up & a portable colour-changing lightbulb that we used as a nightlight for the kids; fully equipped patio dining area where we enjoyed all our family meals.

Facilities: regularly cleaned & modern showers & toilets.
Communal kitchen with everything we needed and then some: gas hob with multiple burners, microwave, toaster, teapots, glasses, a few sets of crockery, pans, cooking utensils & cutlery; plenty of Tupperware for left overs; tea towels; moderate sized fridge that easily accommodated the supplies of all 3 yurts (1 shelf per yurt); sink, washing up bowl, cleaning stuff & drainer stand; plenty of sockets for charging electronics (we were able to share the charging points with the other guests & still ensured that our iPads, phones & Apple watches were fully charged every night).

    Extras: cute little decor details in the yurt like an adorable pig painting, a very cute piglet ornament & absolutely gorgeous throws & rugs - gave the yurt added character & a rustic charm;
safety features like a fire extinguisher & small 1st aid kit; refreshing filtered spring water from the kitchen tap; the wide open green space where all the kids on site could play with each other & have fun just running around; our complimentary Allercombe Farm sausages, bacon & eggs were very very delicious - we were able to use them in 4 separate meals (sausage pasta; egg fried rice; cous-cous with bacon; eggy bread) - and so delicious we bought more; the light sensors that turned the lights on so you could safely make your way to the kitchen or toilet in the middle of the night - also automatic lights on entering the shower or toilet cubicle; environmentally friendly recycling facilities; honesty shop for purchasing more eggs, logs & kindling; proximity to the local Gasto-pub/Restaurant (the Church Inn) - EVERYTHING we chose was 5/5 in quality and taste & extremely reasonably priced for the quality of the meal - honestly the best meal we’ve ever had and we would highly recommend having at least one evening meal there during your stay at Allercombe Farm.

This holiday was so important for our family after having gone through the pandemic & a number of stressful lockdowns - we had high expectations. Allercombe Farm far exceeded our expectations & delivered so much more than we could have wished for. Thank you Deborah & Mark for our beautiful memories and for making this a holiday of a lifetime.

Already looking forward to our next visit soon

Local attractions

Time in Totnes (15 minutes' drive) is time well spent. Folk flock here for all sorts of reasons, but three of them that you'll often hear will include the town's early Norman castle, its superb Sunday market and the annual Totnes and District Show. Parking up here also means you can set off on a circular adventure, first along the Dartmouth Steam Railway to Kingswear, then (after a 10-minute ferry ride to get to the quay) back by a boat that cruises back to Totnes along the scenic river Dart.

Although Buckfast Tonic Wine is its most famous export, Buckfast (15 minutes drive) has given the world more than just potent booze. There's also animal life to observe here at Buckfast Butterfly Farm and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary, as well as top-notch architecture at beauteous Buckfast Abbey.

Time for a swim? Paignton (30 minutes) has oodles of beach space and is well-liked by bathers; it also has a pier where you can indulge the kids with a ride on the slides or carousel. Up for indoor swims on the speedy side? Splashdown Quaywest (30 minutes) will be your best bet.
