Aldridge Mill - Wild Camping: Visitor image of the pitch next to the stream

General

  • Wild site next to a mill stream in 41 acres of old broadleaf woodland
  • A 20-minute drive from Exmoor and Knightshayes Gardens National Trust
  • Adventure playground on site; scenic surrounds for strolling through

A calm space in a sheltered valley, Aldridge Mill – Wild Camping is bordered by a very pretty iron mill stream on its northern side and ancient broadleaf woodland to the east and south. The stream is easily accessible and has plenty of pebbly beaches for cleaning yourself with natural products and collecting water for washing up.

There’s a central firepit here if you're feeling and guests are welcome to have their own small well-tended fires in previous burn spots. too Well-seasoned wood is available to buy on site and food can be picked up in Bampton’s coffee shops, butchers, bakers and local fresh produce store (15 minutes’ drive). The park is set between two small villages, Oakford and Stoodleigh, which each have a local pub.

And as for amenities? They’re on the basic side at this park – there’s a double compost loo and fresh drinking water filled from the well at the mill – but an adventure playground is set up for the kids. You could also wander among the woods, keeping an eye out for deer.

Seeking somewhere especially secluded, perhaps for a larger group who’d like to be away from other guests? The owners can direct you to some wilder spots further downstream or deeper into the woods. Wherever you choose, the surrounds are scenic, as the valley is heavily wooded and crisscrossed by waterways, with walks for all adventure levels and plenty of wild swimming spots.

Please note the lanes down to the mill are narrow and winding and therefore not suitable for very large vehicles or caravans. The owners ask that you take away all rubbish when you go home.

Please note

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Quiet, spacious with limited pitches, everyone was friendly, was dreading the composting loo but was pleasantly surprised, it was as clean as it could be and no issues. Kids were in the river continuously, lots of walks around. Other reviews comment on steep hilly roads and no passing etc but it's as you would expect country roads to be, no issues. And being in the country made stargazing amazing!! Satellites, shooting stars and galaxies.

    Nothing.

The peace and quite. The trolley was very helpful!
We had a meal out at the local pub, The Red Lion, thoroughly recommend it (they made child portions for you).
We rang the number for the logs and they were bought to us straight away.

    Disliked:

Stinging nettles near the freshwater tank tap, so a tiny niggle.

We had a field to ourselves besides the stream

    Disliked:

The hill going down is very very narrow with a dangerously sharp bend at the end. Booked logs and kindling and tried calling all 4 numbers on the sign but no one answered. One of the people staying went an got them for us

Friendly, rural, relaxed. Lovely stream and woods. Perfect for kids to run off and play.
The lanes are very narrow and rough and there is no showers and toilets are a joke in the ground. However they tell you this upfront so it should be no surprise and if wild camping is your thing where the kids can run free and enjoy nature then it is perfect.

    Disliked:

Could do with a bit more mowing to make it easier to pitch up.
